Can anyone receive prep school offer as long as they turn in an application? Or do they have to be under the SAT requirement or not receive a nomination? Anything like that.

In general prep is for those who the military SA want badly but they fall behind peers to such an extent that an extra year of ( hard) instruction is needed.

Prior enlisted, recruited sports types, minorities, those who are really smart but not strong enough, etc etc.

Its not necessarily the next on the list of SA applicants that did not get in the SA.

Typically, prep school attendees have a particular academic deficiency with an otherwise strong file. Prep school offers do not typically go to candidates who have a physical deficiency (i.e. fail the CFA). Oftentimes, active duty service members applying to West Point get prep school offers because it gives them a year to reintegrate into a stringent academic environment. Not receiving a nomination is generally not a qualifier for prep school offer.

Typically being the accurate word.

During my first ones time at NAPS they did have a 4.0+ top of her HS class academic super star who had failed the CFA. And she was there to get stronger.

But not typically I would agree

USNA offered my son to go to a prep school last year. He had almost perfect SAT’s, straight A’s in all AP classes, captain of 2 hockey teams, tons of volunteering and had 2 nominations ( senator and presidential)…was accepted to USMA and got offered Navy and Army ROTC… I can’t think of any reason why he didn’t get straight in, except that we live in Annapolis and the amount of applicants who are the “full package” is really high. Since it was always his dream to go to the USNA, he took the deal.

No jokes about the higher standards for admission to USNA over the USMA

Is your son going to play hockey at the USNA? If so that might be a factor that was considered. Sort of can’t get him this year but we don’t want to lose him?

I think it’s not a science as to who gets in and who does not.

I saw one several years back for one of the 3 prep schools that was really borderline as a prep school admit. They finally admitted them into prep school real late in the process despite their so so not so great at all HS academic background.

why did it take so long to say they were being offered Prep?— grades?—-SATs?—-nope because right up until the end the SA coaches were trying for a direct admit to the SA.

Former CO of NAPS made it to clear to us at a different prep school that the primary mission of NAPS was a farm school Navy Athletics. NAAA and Chet Gladchuk want to compete and win at the D1 level and they are willing to accept people they know will graduate at the bottom of their class IF they graduate at all.

USNA is a 4 year program and getting an additional year to develop an athlete at NAPS is akin to "red shirting" a freshman at a traditional college.
The hockey/football/soccer etc coach may not have a need for a top player this year...but if they can get them into NAPS it solves his recruiting problems for the following year.

NAPS has other reasons to exist but there is nothing truly consistent about who get in etc.

And yet so many napsters are not recruited sports types. Many are while many are not. Not unlike the other two prep schools.

But those that do graduate naps, sports recruits, priors, etc those that do graduate and attend the USNA they do quite well. And they as a rule graduate.

Its a gut feel I have no data or proof but I think pound for pound the best combat leaders produced by the USNA quite often get their start at NAPS.
