My class of 2025 son needs his wisdom teeth out. Should this be done ASAP before R-day? Does he need to notify anyone? This is all new to us so we aren’t sure what, if anything, needs to happen.

Any changes to medical history should be reported to DoDMERB. He can call his assigned contact and ask what’s required. If he needs them out, the sooner the better, so he is fully healed before reporting.

Thank you!

The military will remove them if it is needed, but the recommendation (at least what we got from CGA) is to have them removed at least a month before I-day. An update to the medical record is submitted at that point. We preferred to have it done locally, so my cadet had his removed in mid March last year to make sure he was healed in plenty of time before final paperwork was due to the Academy. Same with any required vaccinations. He needed one that required 2 shots spaced apart, and we had to plan carefully to make sure they were done in time (though they will give them any missing vaccinations when they report, we thought it was better to have those done with as well).

If he has to have them removed, it is usually best to get it done sooner, rather than later to give plenty of time for recovery in case of complications and for any additional paperwork that might be needed.

Just curious, my son is a '25. His wisdom teeth are pushing out, but they'll need to be out sometime. The Army can do this at West Point when it's necessary, yes? Texas Wrestling is just starting so we're not doing it now, and I'm not letting it get done that close to R Day, I just don't want to chance any issues.

Get them done prior to getting here if at all possible. You will not want to be off your feet for a few days here.

Getting them out before R Day is usually the easiest path and the one that seems most often recommended for wisdom teeth that are starting to erupt. If they are not bothering him when he reports, no problem. If he gets to R Day/Beast and they act up/get infected, problem.

The Army will do it at West Point, but I don't think it is an option during Beast. Even during Plebe year, it would be inconvenient due to time crunch. After Plebe year not as much an issue.

Have a thorough discussion with dentist/oral surgeon to understand how urgent it is. Each person is different in terms of when and how neatly wisdom teeth come in.

A few years ago, I had my wisdom teeth taken out and was able to play in my volleyball game the next day. I was even eating solid food again just fine too. Today, my friend was throwing at track practice even though she had had her wisdom teeth taken out yesterday. Wrestling definitely is different, but he should be fine to compete. The surgery’s easy (in my non-medically trained opinion).

My DS is class of ‘24 and if I recall correctly in all the paperwork that had to be done before INDOC they wanted wisdom teeth removed before reporting to USMMA. I believe the reason being that you need to have them out before your first sea term which is during your 3rd class year. Depending on your sea split you will have limited time to have them removed after INDOC. Best bet is to have them removed before INDOC if at all possible.

Sorry I thought this was a post in the USMMA section not USMA. Feel free to remove it.

Apologies, they are NOT pushing out. I messed up that post. Sounds like others have said if they are not erupting, bothering, the Army will take care of it.

DS had to submit panoramic dental Xray before R day. If they see something they will ask/ recommend wisdom teeth this spring. But no harm in pre-emptive removal, just make sure to do it early and update medical record portal etc.

Having to do it as critical need sometime later is NOT a good plan.

DS' one wisdom tooth starts to come out in an angle, and two others are too small to tell. He is an AFROTC candidate. If we decide to remove the non-straight wisdom teeth before he starts the ROTC this Fall, do we need to get clearance from DoDmerb before/after the extraction? Also what about the vaccination -- do we need to submit a copy of all his vaccinations when reporting to the ROTC detachment?

Just a suggestion.....if your son is not a recruited D1 wrestler, skip the part of the season needed to get the teeth taken care of BEFORE R-Day. Normal recovery time, without complications is usually no more than two weeks. Not a big deal in the grand scheme. If he is a recruited athlete, call his future USMA coach and get his input, but as others have said he does not want to have a problem during Beast and have to re-cycle or re-do. If you can prevent an issue before reporting, then do so. Better to report in ready to go without worries. HS is HS, USMA may well be the rest of his life, get off on the right foot..:)

Found the answer from a post by @MullenLE last year to a similar question "There are NO DQs, unless he incurs complications. ...".
