Hi All,

My DS was nominated for USNA & USMMA by Rep & Sen. The only part of his application we’re concerned with is the Athletics. He played 3 years of HS Football through JV, but in order for him to get his letter he would have to start half the games this year. He goes to a highly competitive school with a very large student body (900+ in his grade alone), and basically that wasn’t going to happen barring injury to one of the 1’s.

So he took a promotion at work to move up to Supervisor/Team Lead instead after being a Trainer for a year.

Do the SA’s really value work experience especially supervisory positions? We see that 90% of appointees played Varsity level :/

Does your DS do any non-contact sports? XC/Track are great fitness substitutes …

Injuries happen a lot in American style football …. If your son is not going to play the sport after HS … why risk broken bones and that controversial Head Concussion Disorder anyway …. You shouldn’t bubble wrap your kid … but your DS should be in a injury risk aversion mind set if he is likely to get, or already has, an offer of appointment …

Also, why does he HAVE to become a starter in order to get a letter? Nomination letter? Appointment letter?

Sorry, I might be interpretting it wrong, but it is odd.

It's just how some US High Schools manage their varsity sports. My children's HS was similar. If being on the roster, or playing in a single game/event, is the only qualifying factor it misrepresents their level of participation.

OH! Varsity letter! Sorry, my mind currently is filled with nomination letters, appointment letters, waiver letters, etc.

To OP: Do not mind what each year's class profile says. Some schools' "varsity" teams probably can't even beat another school's JV teams. I play a varsity sport that is unknown at the academy, but where I am at, our district produces the most junior national champions. I would tell your DS to work towards that Varsity letter, but do not let it burden him. Have him enjoy the sport; don't make it his one goal to get to varsity and have him lose his love for the sport altogether.

And yes, work experience does matter. Whether it is having a supervisor role or shaking drinks behind a counter, it is still work experience. It teaches not only maturity, but also how to follow instructions, a good leadership trait.

Good luck to your DS, and above all, DON'T GET INJURED BEFORE I-DAY

Work experience and supervisory experience goes towards leadership.....certainly relevant to Admissions Board.
Nobody can tell you if that will overcome lack of Varsity Sport...a lot depends upon whom DS is competing with for Admission, and the rest of the package.

Bottom line, its way to late to even worry about it at this point...all you can do is present your application the best you can, sit back and wait for results.
