Wrong Academy On Nomination Application

Hi All,

I submitted my nomination application last night and didn't think to go over my basic applicant information since I had filled it out first thing months ago. I learned my mistake that I should have taken the time to go over it because I put the wrong academy down for my nomination source.

I emailed the office immediately after, and I have yet to hear back if they can change it. I'm feeling anxious because I mentioned my summer seminar experience at the service academy I was originally applying for at that nomination office.

Should I call if I don't hear back by middle next week? And, will this be poorly reflected upon?

You should call. I believe most MOC staff would change it for you. Every MOC staff and board is different.

Agree with calling. Exercise your best professional, appreciative live phone skills. Rehearse what you are going to say, be ready to take notes, take a breath and go do an adult business call.

Note that you made an error in your eagerness to get the process started a few months ago and that you have learned a valuable lesson in attention to detail. Ask them to advise you on the way most convenient for them to correct your nom application. Apologize for the time they will have to take to help you rectify your error. Note who you are talking to, and express appreciation to them using their names. They know you are in high school and won’t be surprised by errors made in haste.

And: “I put the wrong academy down for my nomination source.” I think you mean “preference” not “nomination source.” The elected official is the nom source. You list the academy(ies) as a preference or ranked choice to be nominated to, depending how their form is set up.

Don't flinch, just wear it and ask if they can correct your mistake. It's mostly everyone's first application and things happen. Also, @Capt MJ has excellent advice for life in that second paragraph: when asking for favors make it easy to help you, acknowledge your ownership of the problem, and say thank you. High school or not you'll be screwing up again someday and it's a great formula for getting yourself out of the ditch.
