I received my LOA last week. I'm so excited! Now I only need to get a nomination and complete my CFA. I'm taking my CFA this weekend, but I'm kind of nervous. I'm having difficulty with the pullups and ball throw. I can almost do one pullup. If I can't, will holding myself above the bar for a sufficient amount of time still enable me to pass?

Here's help for the Basketball throw: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=16792

For the pull-up, females score higher by doing 1 complete pull-up than by holding the bar for the max amount of time.

Congrats on the LOA! Regarding the CFA, if you are serious about USMA you need to think past "passing". You'll have to do many things in CBT (Beast) that will utilize pullup type strength. Likewise in Military movement and later the IOCT. Which are all part of your cadet grade.

Then there is the APFT you'll take twice a year, possibly more as a plebe (currently pushups, situps, and running). While there is a pass/fail aspect to it in that you have to meet the Army minimums, it also impacts your grade. From memory, minimum army pass would be a C- or worse.

So now would be the time to start that training program. At the minimum- running, pullups, situps, pushups (double the pushups), and leg lifts. Do so and your beast experience will be significantly better, as will your cadet grade.

All that said, you do need to pass the CFA in time, so don't wait. Just think past it and prepare for success as a cadet! :thumb:

Hawk - Yes, I plan on doing workout programs like P90x and insanity, plus continuing to practice my pullups during the winter. But, since I have to take the CFA this weekend, I'm just thinking about passing now. That said, I can hold myself above the bar for nearly the max time, so Im thinking I will pass (given I do average/perfect in all the other events).
Thanks!! I'm sooooo excited :shake:

LOA

Just got my LOA in the mail today. Dated September 15th. I was getting nervous!

Attendance in SLS: No

LOA Received!!!!!

DS received LOA in mail yesterday, 9/19 dated 9/15. Everything is complete, just waiting for nomination process to wrap up. File is complete with all three MOCs, just waiting for interviews with MOCs. Files complete with USNA and USAFA as well. He is now working through college apps and scholarship apps at backup plan universities.

He has done the VP nom application already, right?
He has filled out form on VP's website and had three letters of recommendation sent to USMA, USAFA, and two to USNA. He is trying to nudge his third recommender along on the final letter to USNA for VP nom. These don't show on status screens at all. Would you recommend that he contact admissions reps at each of the academies to ensure that they have received notification that he has filed for VP nom and that they have received the separate recommendation letters? ALso, he was selected last night to advance to the national level for National Council of Youth Leadership and received a scholarship and trip to national convention in St Louis to be held next month. Should he contact admissions and MOC's and tell them about this and ask them to add it to his activities and achievements records?

Yes, I believe so. Do so through the "Contact Us" or something to the like in the portal (that's how it works on the USMA portal).

Competitive Nomination Process and LOA's

For those who don't know how this works in practice.

My son is plebe this year. Last year he got his LOA about this time. Our local Congressman uses the competitive selection process. For every open slot he has in a year, he can nominate up to 10 people and the Army picks the most competitive out of the 10 to fill the slot.

If your DS/DD has an LOA and is picked as 1 of those 10, they are in. The beauty is that doesn't count against the congressman's slot. Last year, our congressman had two open slots (they have 5 to spread over 4 years at each academy). He also had two kids with LOAs. So ---- he got 4 appointees in his district into the Academy in one year....

Thank you for clarifying that, chief_bs. I know it was not clear to me at least.

Just to be crystal clear, the candidate must be physically and academically qualified as well - of course...

The stats for the class of 2015:

13,954 Applicants
4,344 Nominated
2,554 Qualified
1,249 Admitted

Chief (or others) -- My Congressman uses "Principal with Numbered Alternates" Nomination process. If a candidate has an LOA, but is not the Principal nominee and only is one of the "numbered alternates" - is that still considered a "Nomination"?

Thanks for your help.

Yes :thumb:

To clarify some more.
To have a nomination from a MOC is to be on the slate of 10. That fulfills the nomination requirement. It doesn't matter if you have a LOA or not for it to be considered a nomination.
It certainly helps to have a LOA. With the situation you described, the LOA candidate could be #10 on the slate and will get the appointment (if all other conditions of the LOA are met).
If you don't have a LOA and are not #1, then you will go on the NWL and ranked according to your WCS. You will then be competing for an appointment not just against those in your Congressional District or state, but nationwide against the other candidates who were not #1 their MOC's slate.

On the slate = a nomination.

what about Principal with unranked Alternates Nomination process. If you are one of the unranked alternates do you have a Nom or does only the principal have the nom?

An unranked alternate on that type of MOC slate would still have a nom.

Regardless of the type of slate (Competitive, Principal w/unranked (competing) alternates, Principal w/ranked alternates) everyone on the slate has a nom.
They have all been nominated by that MOC.
