Army ROTC 2nd Board Results

Any others have a rollercoaster of emotions this week? DS went from the thrill of getting a 4-yr scholarship to a first-choice school, only to have his dreams dashed by an (early decision) admissions denial letter two days later. DS will look again at his other option to use his scholarship, but this was a rough week.
Congrats to your DS on his scholarship. There are many threads on SAF about a scholarship impacting admissions. My DS was awarded a 4-YR AROTC scholarship and had an admissions decision reversed after receipt of the scholarship. The ROO of the school went to bat for my DS and he was admitted. He ended up not attending the school because he was awarded the NROTC-MO scholarship. My suggestion is to contact the unit and have your DS be prepared to tell why he wants to attend the school. Best of luck to your DS.

I think my leadership is good. I played football varsity for 2 years, did martial arts for 10 years with teaching and coaching, and did marching band and was section leader and band treasurer. I am in the highest band where we perform for national competitions. I was Key club Division secretary and Executive Assistant to a membership of around 1,600. I did robotics as a electrical member. I did FBLA for 3 years, winning into the state competition twice. I am part of the link crew, CFA, and NHS of my school but not a big part of it. I am also the Model UN and debate club. I am FPSPI founding member and sectary. I also did California Boys state, USCGA AIM, and USAFA Summer seminar in the summer.

As my interview, I thought it went quite well. My interviewer sounded very pleased with my will to serve and said I should have no problem getting a scholarship in either the 1st or 2nd board. Now I think he said that to everyone, as I am here now with neither haha.
Very solid credentials for sure. You really should be proud of yourself. Anywhere you go, they will be lucky to have you.

My DS is also applying. Your path might have crossed his if your AIM was also an in-person one in mid-July. As my wife, I, and my son often chatted at home, the entire application process is, in many ways, unpredictable. Part of our human nature is, most people do not like uncertainty. Therefore, see this process as an opportunity to learn not speculating on what you can’t control, but focus your energy delivering the best on what you can control. Later in your life, you will be in many similar situations, full of unpredictables. This is a warm-up exercise.

My wife told me son: as long as your application materials present you to the admissions committee accurately and comprehensively, you have done your job, then go playing sports, reading good books, and hanging out with friends. Don’t worry about the outcome because that’s the out-of-control part. About AROTC, there is a mysterious section called CBEF. No one knows how that part is graded.

Enjoy this process as much as you can, Because of my son’s applications, we’ve done many mini travels, such like attending the CGA events, experiencing AROTC weekend training at Cornell. etc. Fun family time that you all want to enjoy before you leave home in a few months.

I'm trying to spend more time with my family since wherever I'm going, it'll be the first time I'm apart from them for more than 2 months. I'm excited for college, new experience, and people I'll make along the way no matter where I'm heading! Also, I was in the in person session two of AIM in Alpha group! Maybe I've seen your DS! But thank you for the advice! I'm going to rest up know that I have a backup, and a backup plan incase the AROTC path goes awry, but it's difficult. I'm a very big worrier, especially for things I can control. I hope the best for you and your family!

I had a similar one. DS got his 4 year and one of his 3 ROTC schools he already had a Scholarship for 45K so we thought all bases covered. Dream come true. Find out Friday this school won't allow him to use his merit scholarship for room and board. Not the end of the world I know he feels like he has worked very hard to line this all up. He was hoping to have all 3 schools so he could compare apples to apples.
That's hard to understand. So the school goes from (Full tuition - 45k) to (Full tuition) due to your son's accomplishments and willingness to serve and expects you to think that's a good deal? That's mind-bogglingly stupid by the school. I'd be sorely tempted to look elsewhere if they are that intransigent. Basically, they just reduced the value of his ROTC scholarship at their school by 45k. Hard pass.

You should call the school back and tell them that your son has decided to decline the ROTC scholarship. Tell them he has decided to join ROTC as a non-scholarship participant without any commitments and he'll accept the merit scholarship. See what they say then! I bet they'll feel like negotiating.

Could he use merit scholarship for tuition etc. and ROTC scholarship for room and board at that school?

I was going to ask this as well, ROTC scholarships can be used for room and board instead of tuition.
He could but tuition at this school is quite a bit above the 45K so then he have a balance of tuition unpaid and a balance of Room & Board above the 10K from ROTC. Short story either the school will work with us or he will go to one of his other 2 schools awarded where he is 100% and he does like both schools too.

I just checked my status page today and it has gone from “winner” last week to “unknown” today (“Current status is “unknown”, while information is being processed”) I am thinking this is because I requested to transfer my scholarship to another school. Has anyone else seen this in their portal?

If it's the school I think it is, they are intransigent. They have plenty of students paying full tuition and very few ROTC.

He's still got great alternatives!

If memory serves me you warned me of this possibility several months ago. This whole process is quite an education.

I just got an email saying i can update my application between boards. Does this mean my application will be given a new score in march since I was already boarded?

I believe you can update with new test scores and PFT scores, and maybe GPA, but what I believe I've read is that those increases won't weigh as much as on the first round. In the initial review with the scores you submitted those things get considered in the PMS interview and then again in the board review and you have a total score. I think then that say you increase your PFT by 10 points then you get 10 more points. So any impact the improved score would have had on the PMS interview and board review won't happen at this point. This is how I understand it from everything I've read when they say you can submit better scores, but they won't be weighted as much. But I say take every extra point you can get! Could be the difference between a 4 year or 3 year or any at all! Good luck!

My son just received an offer for the Early Commissioning Program to attend one of the four Military Junior Colleges full tuition for 2 years. After that he could attend any 4 year college with AROTC and have his tuition paid for an additional 2 years. This leads to an 8 year National Guard or Reserve commitment after graduation. At this point he's considering this, but isn't sure this is the route he wants to go. He'll have to decide to accept or decline before the March Board. If he declines, is it pretty much decided he won't get anything after the March Board? Thanks!

I got one of these offers too. I'm not sure if I'll accept it though.

I just got into Virginia tech for the corps of cadets but haven’t received a scholarship through the first two rounds. Should I upload the pdf of my acceptance to the portal or do they know?

If you don't tell them; they don't know. I doubt it would make a difference, but it can't hurt.
