2012 USAFA Summer Seminar Students

Sophomore - Senior Year

In most instances if you are qualified enough it should not make that much of a difference on whether you can put down freshman year. You should be showing leadership and participating in extra - curriculars all four years. Then when you are filling out the application for the class of 2017 you can include your freshman year then.

From what I remember, they only do that for sports. It's a column of check boxes that go from sophomore to senior year for every sport.

You would be able to put your activities in student government in your record.

what did you have for civil involvements/leadership positions?

Hey guys! I just was accepted for summer seminar and I am going to session B. I am from Denver, Colorado. Any tips from people who have gone?

Give your 100% and enjoy it. Your goal while your there is to see if USAFA is right for you, so make sure you keep that in mind.

If your from the south, like me, the lack of air (plus its dry) is going to hit you like a bag of bricks. I sprint often and run bleachers nearly everyday, but myself and other kids were gasping for air just going up three flights of stairs. Also, make sure you are hydrated, no matter where you are from. It will keep you from being dizzy and nauseated. I never drank water before I went to SS, but I drank it every fifteen minutes while I was there. Not much advice, and I'm sure I could offer more, but it's really all you need. I hope this helps.

Prep for SS

Shurstell is absolutely right. If you're from the "lowlands" start preparing physically now. DS went to SS last summer. He was in good shape because we had recently participated in a backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in NM. When we returned, he didn't stop running the bleachers, and running track like we did to prepare for mountain backpacking. In addition, he was also doing 2-a-day football practice before he went to SS.

Our home is at 24 feet above sea level. He still struggled a little bit because of the altitude, and got adjusted to it fairly quickly. Best advice is to be, and stay, in great shape. Not that the SS is all that physically demanding but you'll have a better time if you're not struggling to walk up stairs, and run up and down little hillocks.

I found out today that I did not get accepted. Does anyone know if they email you or mail a letter home? like a rejection letter? And if you are put on the waiting list how would you know this?

what did you have for civil involvements/leadership positions?

Uhm, I'm not exactly sure. I don't exactly remember what I wrote but if I had anything at all I probably put my volunteer work at a local library (100+ hours). No club leadership positions, private pilot license, eagle scout or anything.

Hi!

Sorry to hear that. But do NOT let this dissuade you!!! The selection for SS is MUCH harder than you know! The numbers are just against everyone. And I'm not saying that to make you feel better, I've been an ALO for 17+ years...I know of what I speak!

They "may" or "may not" send letters this year; we've not been told. "They've" been moving to an all "online" system. So maybe nothing??? I'd like to know if anyone gets something!!!

If you are "on the waiting list..." Okay...I'm going to burst a bubble here...there's no waiting list. If the online page says "Not Selected" then that's it.

NOW...I will say that YES, it is "possible" that some folks MIGHT, and I say MIGHT with BIG LETTERS...be offered slots later if folks turn them down. But I'd also say DO NOT PLAN ON THAT!!! If it happens, what a deal! But I think it won't.

But also...officially from USAFA, selection/non-selection for SS doesn't impact you in ANY way should you pursue appointment next year. And they're serious about that! Your package next year, should you press on, is ALL that they will evaluate!!!

My online staus has said applicant for close to a month now, does this mean I probably won't be accepted?

Got accepted to SS on 6th Jan. I applied about 2 days after the application window opened. I live overseas (in the UK) and I'm going to session A. So excited!!

Today, my status was changed to waitlisted. Does anyone know what my chances of being accepted are?

Don't be shy, contact the Academy, I don't mean to hound them, but my DS was waitlisted last spring and he sent a couple of emails and then was accepted. He did not have a choice as to which week was available, but after being waitlisted and then accepted, he didn't really care. My point is, even though you have been waitlisted, you still have a chance. Good Luck to all who have been waitlisted and to all you have already been accepted. My DS truly enjoyed the week last year. :thumb:

Hi I'm Dan and I live in Connecticut. Just got my acceptance letter today and I am going to Session B

I'm Andrew, and I'm from Illinois. I was just wondering how many people are attending session C. I've read many comments saying how people will be attending sessions A and B, but I haven't heard of too many attending session C.

This is Flygurl. My sister Machlove and I will be attending Session C representing NorCal. Can't wait till June 18th!

Thank you. I have actually contacted Lt. Colonel Taylor a few times. He said that about 10% of the people who get accepted turn it down. But I'd like to know where I stand on the waitlist. Is this who your DS contacted?
