My DS is at MAX. Called me to tell me that he has failed and they are sending home. Non-Scholarship, Contracted. What happens now? Options? Can’t find anything online about what happens if someone fails MAX and is sent home? Any advice? Please and Thank You

I am sure others will post more substantive comments, but I’m up early to get ready to go support USNA I-Day, and apparently you are too.

I believe the MAX course is the go/no go threshold for moving on to the Professional Officer Course status. Your son will have to work with his unit chain of command to determine his status and next steps.
I am sure he was crushed when he called. Support him as he gets back up and figures this out - that’s about all you you can do. I don’t know if the door is completely closed on his AF officer aspirations, but finding that out is key, as to is being prepared to find another path.

Thank you. Yes, it was one of the worst calls I’m sure he had to make and us to receive. I’m sure more details will emerge once he arrives back home. Until then, so much will have to be weighed. First thing will be to contact his Det. to figure what he is to do for the Fall semester. He really had high hopes but maybe it just wasn’t for him for some reason. Time will reveal all. And, thank you again for responding to my post! Helps to “hear” from someone!

It is highly likely that they will start the disenrollment process as soon as he gets back so when he returns to school he will go in and sign any paperwork that needs to be completed.

He is not the 1st nor will he be the lasts to not complete SFT. It will take time to heal, but in time he will look back at this as a growing aspect. It is hard to get those phone calls as a parent because you feel so helpless. JMPO, but give him space. When he is ready to talk he will, but trying to rush it can make them go silent even longer.

Good luck

The AFROTC Field Training Manual, section 6.2, states that "Cadets removed from leadership evaluation and development with prejudice will be det dropped (non-contract) or investigated for disenrollment (contract) once they return to the detachment."

I do know a young man in my daughter's detachment who was dropped for this reason a few years ago. He is now an Army officer.

Thank you. Yes, this was very heartbreaking all the way around. And I know this will be very tough to crawl of out for awhile. Certainly something that will be a lesson in time but he had such high hopes (like many before him)...just so heartbreaking. We are anticipating the disenrollment investigation and ultimately being dropped.

Good to hear that it does work out for some. Although AF was his first and only choice so it seems that it’s the end of the line for the military for him. Thanks for the reply

It is not good to be sent home but your DS should work with his detachment. In my DS's detachment there was one cadet who was sent home from FT, but was allowed to stay on and try again, so there may be hope. It will of course all depend on the reason he was sent home.

My advice to your son would be to not close the door on other opportunities before he thinks hard and talks to other people about his options. Opinions and choices have a way of changing when circumstances change. Army ROTC always has cadets that come from AFROTC because they either do not get a SFT slot or do not pass the course. It does not mean that the Army is easier, it's just that their summer training does not take place until after the junior year and they have less attrition needs because they commission to both Active Duty and Reserves, plus they commission a far larger number of officers to active duty then AFROTC.

This does not need to be the end of the line for the military for him, if he has a desire to serve, this would be a good option for him to explore. His first contact should be with his Det. to see what his options with AFROTC will be, he should also contact the AROTC Battalion at his school as soon as possible as well to see what his options there would be, at least he will have all the information early to make a decision.

Best of luck to your son.

Non-Scholarship, Contracted
You say he is contracted, however, dont you only get contracted the beginning of Junior Year after you passed Field Training?

Was wondering the same thing. I didn't know you could contract before going to FT if you are non-scholly.

Also, my detachment allows some cadets to come back, depending on the reason the got sent home. I know one cadet from my det failed 3 GLPs, got sent home. Came back this year as a 500, failed a GLP given by FTP instructor and then was disenrolled.

How the hell do you fail a GLP lol. Let’s be honest, AFROTC is probably one of the easiest commissioning programs to get through in terms of leadership ability and military bearing. I’ve seen very mediocre people get contracted an even commissioned in the past couple of years - somehow even they managed to make it.

In AROTC Advanced camp, I have heard of a few isolated cadets doing well in all skill activities but then losing a huge chunk of points based on peer leadership reviews. In other words, if the cadet was a total jerk, it could result in a major reduction or even failure on the OML.

I do agree, there are some people who I see contracted / commission that shouldn't. However, I do understand why some people fail GLPs... I don't know about 3 in a row but depending on the evaluator, some can look for very specific things.
