April AROTC Board

Nervous about the Service?

Only if you consider my checking the Cadet Command status for my son every 20 minutes or so today.

Anyway it just changed from "You have been selected for an interview" to "You may check your medical qualification status".

We'll see what happens. It's still far from over.

I would like to wish the best of luck to everyone currently awaiting the soon to be posted results!!!!!!

Yeah! Another scholarship awarded! We're next.:shake:

What's the problem with the schools?

Unfortunately my daughter had a last minute change of mind and didn't want to go to a military college which is what she'd put down for most of her choices. So, she's been scrambling since being awarded the scholarship to apply to schools that are not military schools and the one she really wanted and had accepted the scholarship for just let her know this week she wasn't accepted. So....we're in panic mode! She's got state schools as options but really didn't want a state school either. Lesson learned....hopefully not too late!:unhappy:

Well, looks like it's over - and not the outcome we were hoping for.

Status hasn't changed, but PMS for my son's top school called back today to say he wasn't selected by the National boards, AND that - contrary to what he said previously! - there aren't any 4-year campus-based scholarships left, either.

He does have 3-year scholarships, but there's no way to make that work - no way can he afford to go to the first year without the scholarship. Accepted to 12 good schools, but no chance to go...

We are back to square one, trying to find a way for DS to go to school. He had always talked about wanting to serve, this seemed an ideal way both to serve his interests (academics and military service) as well as the needs of the military.

Thanks to all for your support and counsel. Best wishes to all in the process.

Very sorry to hear that-understand the dilemma. I wonder why he told you he had 4-yr scholarships and now only has 3-yr?

Some options to consider would be joining the Reserves or the National Guard-both which will pay in state college tuition. Oldest son joined National Guard and will be going to college after he is done with his training.

So is CC done offering scholarships?

Hopefully, you'll find a way to make it all work. Let us know.

PMS told us that CC should be all complete and posted tomorrow.
Said it looks like they made it up to the H's today.
So there is still hope for us at the far end of the alphabet.

My fingers and toes are crossed for you!

Did you consider getting loans for the first year? That's a good option - students can get guaranteed loans and parents can also apply for loans to supplement the student loans.

Good luck - I hope you can find a way to make it work!

Please don't give up, there are still ways for your son to serve and go to school. Like someone stated above, you can still get loans.

Another option which is highly respected is signing up with the reserves/guard and have the military pay for school. Your son would have to go to basic but that is a short obstacle. With the guards or reserves, it will grant your son another chance for the next incoming year. Please, if he is dedicated to serving his country/going to school, look into that option.

Maybe they didn't get to you yet.

What is your back up plan just in case?

My back-up is to reapply for a campus based scholarship next year. I have a $2k scholarship per year at the moment so that will help a bit but I'm really hoping I dont have to resort to that.

But hey! Everything happens for a reason.

Thanks for the supportive comments, and the suggestions.

Max student loans are $5,500 for a freshman, while in-state tuition here is $8-$10K. Add fees, room & board, books, etc. and you're looking at $20K / year - and there's no chance we'll be able to cover the extra $15K (long story short, the economy's really cratered our finances). But, no whining, I made my bed, I'll lie in it. And we'll pay back the $60K in credit cards we ran up surviving the unemployment line if it takes 5 years of PBJ sandwiches (and working at a job I hate).

I just wish that the money that I'll have to pay on credit cards could go to pay for my son's college instead over this next 5 years.

This was all worth the ride, and we might even see about trying all this again next year. The goal of ROTC is worth it - get an education, AND serve your country, now what could be a better thing to aspire to?

Best wishes for successful outcomes to ALL!
