Army ROTC 2023-2024 3rd Board

My DS is considering CSI. We are making a second visit to campus next month. Will probably decide after that.

It's like we are two ends of the spectrum. My DS initially wanted CSU or College of Charleston. He was NOT going to a military college.

Long story short, he applied to CSU and CofC and was accepted to both. Won a 3-Year in the January board. Then in March, he was like, hey I think want to go to The Citadel. Applied, was accepted and now it's soon time to make a final decision. It's been fun watching him go through the college search process and see how his mindset and attitude changed over time. His mother and I agree The Citadel would be a terrific environment for him, and we believe he would thrive there. It's a very impressive place.
Agree...our son was the same. Took him to several college visits, not including the ones he attended when his sister went through the process. Nothing fancied him. He started getting more involved and enthusiastic in his JROTC program so I suggested visiting the Citadel. He knew of my stories from Norwich and his grandpa as a retired Army officer and instructor at USMA, but never showed any interest. It's when we showed up at the Citadel but not until the afternoon Corps parade when he turned to us and said, "this is where I belong". When we asked why his response was "it will fill all the holes in me that I need filled". That was January 2023....by August 2023 he applied and we drove up to the Citadel for his scholarship interview with the ROO and afterward he walked around the admissions office and introduced himself, told him he applied, and handed them a packet. Two weeks later - accepted and he's been hard charging about it since. We honestly did not know how to pay for it, so the 3 year AD on this last board sealed the deal. It's awesome to see your child's dreams come true. I suspect our boys will be classmates...

Wishing they would just change the status to not selected and put us out of our misery. Still showing as Boarded U/C. Not selected in Feb and then waiting until March to be not selected is rough :(

My son is boarded under consideration today. I am so new to all of this. Can someone just tell me what this means. I have been trying to figure this out by going through the thread. Also. He just got a text from a lieutenant at his first choice school that wants to discuss a scholarship under the national
Guard?

My DS received a 3yr to his top 3 choices. He had average scores I believe but maxed out the interview is the feedback we got, if helpful to others. I have a few questions that are not clear to me.
  1. As a 3yr scholarship recipient, what are your military commitment obligations post graduation?
  2. What rank are you commissioned as upon graduation as a 3yr recipient? I see that 4yr come out as a 2nd LT.
  3. What is the financial assistance work given he has $15,500 from the Dean Scholarship from ERAU? Will it go towards the rest of tuition, etc.
  4. Can he change majors from what he chose in the portal during the application process?

Do scholarship winners receive a certificate or something in the mail? If yes, what is the timing of it?

1 - obligations are identical for 4-yr and 3-yr recipients.
2 - Same as 4-yr, you are commissioned as a 2nd Lt.
3 - ROTC scholarship will cover tuition and fees OR room and board, so depending on what tuition remains after the $15.5k you have, may be more financially smart to opt for the R&B coverage.
4 - For AROTC, most likely depending on what the change is. Best advice is to speak to the PMS or ROO at the school.

Yes! A couple weeks after the award. I think there is also info on the additional information tab in the portal about having someone come to awards ceremony to present a giant check also.

If you aren't selected for a national scholarship here and are OK with doing Guard or Reserve duty, then I would definitely pursue the Minuteman Scholarship. It's an almost guaranteed scholarship opportunity, though you cannot pursue active duty if you go that route.

Gather up all your info, look at your options and choose a path. If you are dead set on active duty, there are still other ways.

Thanks a ton! One other question you may know. A school he is very interested in just restarted their program this past year and was not listed as an option during the process. IF he decides on that school, is it possible to 'transfer' the scholarship in such a case?

Same boat here. And guessing we won’t get any updates until Tuesday at a minimum due to the long Easter weekend. Ugh!!!
