Army ROTC March 2013 Board

medic7562 and to all who have not heard if you received a scholarship or not. Please do not give up hope. Have your DS/DD sign up for ROTC classes, bust your butt on on the PFT, and be the best canidate you can and hopefully the cadre will notice and offer a campused based scholarship. Good luck.:thumb:

Well looks like my Son did not receive the scholarship he was so in hopes of getting, as his portal did not change and there is no letter. :( It is a huge disappointment for him, but I guess now time to move on and find a plan B.

Congratulations to all those that did receive their scholarships! What an awesome opportunity for you!

Has your son considered SMP (Simultaneous Membership Program)? He would drill with a Guard/Reserve once a month (and two weeks in the summer)... and get paid. He would also be eligible for the Tuition Assistance program to help cover the cost of tuition. Though he would have to go to basic training and or AIT for additional benefits beyond that.

My son was actively looking at that process and was just waiting to pull the trigger after the 3rd boards (turns out he was offered a scholarship). Have your son contact the school he plans on attending and asking about it. They will be a great resource and know which units locally are a good choice.

Would he go to basic training this summer then before he starts school?

Possibly. There are SMP cadets who never go to basic, but I don't know the details on how that works. My son's plan was to go to Basic and possibly AIT for the experience (and the GI bill). In fact he seems slightly disappointed that he couldn't still go SMP and accept the scholarship.

I know as parents the thought of them leaving the nest a few months sooner is scary, but for your son the experience of basic would be a great growth opportunity, as well as get him physically and mentally ready for ROTC.

I would say it is very unlikely your son could get a BCT spot for this summer, remember, high schools get out later and college starts sooner, so it is sometimes harder to fit in BCT before starting college.

One option is that your son could start college in the fall, join ROTC, work hard and as said above, have a great APFT and keep a solid GPA the first semester. There may be a chance your son could be offered a campus scholarship by the end of the first semester, if not, he would have time to join the NG and SMP program, he does not need to go to BCT or AIT unless he wants the GI Bill, he would still get drill pat, tuition assistance. SMP cadets can't contract until the start of their sophomore year so there is no need to rush. Wait and see if a campus scholarship may be possible..

Tell your son to try and be as close to a 300 APFT as he can when he starts school, try and have a minimum 3.5 GPA at the semester. These two will keep him in the running if a campus scholarship is available.

SMP cadets compete with all cadets for Active Duty unless they accept a GRFD Scholarship.

Thank you for the information I will pass this along.

Any ideas on how to word transfer request

I made a mistake when applying for ROTC scholarship. I put down Boston University instead of Boston College where I was accepted. Any advice on what to say for the transfer?

You may not need to transfer, per se, since Boston College is a cross-town affiliate of Boston University. Costs appear to be roughly the same. If time permits I would contact the unit to find out how to handle this. It may just be a matter of properly recording the school. If unable to contact the unit, then submit the transfer request and be honest about your error. Include a copy of your acceptance letter to Boston College. Folks at HQ will know how to handle this as well. I honestly expect you will not have any serious difficulty with this other than taking some ribbing about attention to detail. Good luck! :thumb:

Should DS be concerned? His portal changed to show he has received a scholarship, but he still has not received his letter. We are on the West Coast. He has tried calling the ROO at the school listed on the portal, but no answer. He also called the ROO for his #1 school; however, he won't release information until the letter arrives. Help! Is anyone else waiting for their letter? Any advice is appreciated.

It seems that there is always a few letters that are slow in the mail... I would contact your contact at Cadet Command on Friday if nothing arrives by then.

Just to add: perhaps the school offers "Non-Scholarship" Cadets incentives such as room & board waivers, service grants, etc. Of course, these incentives are tied to good grades and good APFT scores; reach out to the ROO to find out.

Thank you. I will have my son contact the ROO and explore his options. I appreciate all of the advise it has been a huge help.

Boston College is not listed as a crosstown affiliate for ROTC. It is for NROTC but not ROTC. Do you think this will change my chances?

Thank you for your advice. Hopefully he will hear something today. If not we found the phone number to call and will follow that lead tomorrow. Looks as thought the school is on Spring Break. Once we know for sure, I am sure there will be many more questions to follow.

Does anyone know if there is an ROTC representative on campus at an affiliate school?

You have posted your question about this on three threads, pick one and stick with it.

Nobody hear can give you any idea of what your chances are. you need to spend less time asking questions here and more time on the phone with the AROTC battalions in question to see what, if anything can be done.

As Clarkson would ask....What did the ROO tell you when you talked to them?

BC and BU are in different battalions, that is why you will not see them listed together. I agree with the advice given above, more time on the phone and less on the computer. BC's ROTC points of contact are up to date at their website. My son is there, and I have found them to be very helpful.

Medical?

I received my letter on Monday 4/1. When should I expect my DoDMERB packet in the mail?

Fairly shortly from now. I know when I received my BFE, I received my DoDMERB packet (if I remember correctly) the week afterwards, or the following week.

Personal advice: schedule your appointments ASAP. In case you run into some medical issues, this gives you the most amount of time to get your waivers and get everything worked out (administrative). Remember, you aren't completely eligible to receive the scholarship UNTIL you are DoDMERB qualified.

That's right. So tell your parents not to run out and buy a new boat until you pass Dodmerb and pass your APFT when you get to school.
