Cadet for a Day... help?

About the power outage...if you're frustrated, think about the swab summer cadre who are trying to get training done in the dark. Semper Gumby is definitely something you learn while you're here. It might be driving you nuts to sit there clicking the refresh button, but being without power from 0400 to 2000 is just as frustrating, particularly when you're trying to shower in the dark with a flashlight. :thumb:

There are plenty of CFADs scheduled for the school year. Just be patient, the military likes to follow the old adage, "hurry up and wait."

Cruel Joke USCGA

Yep. We can log onto the USCGA website, but can't yet reserve a slot. After Almost 22 hours of trying, I'm burned out. Going to sleep. Will try again tomorrow if it's not to late. Semper Goat Rope!

Happy to see you finally have your internet back. I know that there are many happy 2/c :thumb:

Is there any chance that the CGA is just going to post the registration tomorrow morning? It's already 10 pm.

I wish I would have seen these posts earlier. I thought I was being blocked by all of you who were in the same "boat" as we were. As you can see I'm getting a little punchy. I also caught up on one of my series. So the day wasn't a total waste, just frustrating.

I am a little disappointed with the lack of response from the CGA. It seems like they should have seen the issue beforehand and changed the registration date...or at least provided some type of notification that signups would not go on till later that night on the 5th (assuming they still manage to get the sign ups up.) So far I am having no luck.

The power outage announcement, at least to the cadets that are here, was made pretty late. Waesche (the building where admissions works) was scheduled to have power so they probably thought that nothing would be affected. However, we did get a notice that the Academy website would be down temporarily. Honestly, and not to be rude, most of the Academy is focused on the last week of swab summer and preparing for the Corps to come back next weekend. Once the Academic year starts, Admissions will be back on track.

In all fairness, the basewide power outage hasn't been scheduled for that long. It was relatively short notice and it IS a Sunday. Admission's staff isn't on base today.

We cadets understand you all might be frustrated, but the needs of the CG base outweigh the this application process.

It's a pain for everyone, but the servers for the internet just came back up recently so the application should be soon to follow.

Happy belated coast guard day!

Cadets,
If we don't get to participate in Cadet for a Day, does that affect our chances of getting into the Academy?

Disclaimer: I'm just a class of 2017 hopeful. I'd assume not, just like AIM has nothing to do with acceptance. CFAD is just a way for a prospective candidate to finalize their decision.

Cadet for a Day (which I don't believe we had when I was a cadet) is just a way for you to taste CGA if you weren't in AIM.

The overnight program (which we called "Bean Sprouting") is more to give hopefuls, who have been accepted, a final push.

I bean sprouted in 2002. My 4/c was a guy named John (now a pilot). I think he was in Delta Co. A year later I was a 4/c, and he was a 3/c in Bravo Co. A year after that I was a 3/c in Bravo. A year after that John was my Firstie and I was a 2/c. That same year, at hockey one morning I flipped a puck into Johnny's face, almost took his eye. He had 3-7 stitches. Never got mad though (that's what we get for ditching cages). I felt bad.

Two years later Johnny was on a 210' and I was on cutter's sister ship in the same port. I ran into Johnny at various CG hockey tournaments we call the "Commandant's Cup". He's a good guy.

Bean sprouting, and I would assume Cadet for a Day, can be very valuable in helping someone make a decision. It was an experience that sealed the deal for me. I let USNA and USMMA know shortly after that I had made a decision.

Enjoy your time and learn what you can. Ask questions and listen. And remember, the people you meet then.... if you end up going to CGA... you will see those people again.

On a side note: I never liked people calling me "Cadet" when I was a cadet. Don't know if that still exists.

Because there are multiple cadets who use SAF, you might get a quicker response if you use their SAF names (like mine is general LITS).

Just got DS registered... cut my work out short to come home and get online. Whew!:thumb:

To follow up what LineInTheSand said. My son did not make AIM, so he applied for CFAD. His cadet really impressed my son. My son was offered, and accepted, an appointment to CGA Scholars. The cadet he was assigned to is now CGAS cadre (different company, I think. Communications have been...sparse).

After yesterday, I decided I wasn't getting up early today as well. Strolled downstairs, logged on and got our slot!

I hope everyone got the date they needed. Maybe we'll see you there...

Nicole
