Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the admissions portal only updates once a day, right? So if you check it once and there isn't anything new, then it's pointless to check again for another 12-24 hours? That's what I've been telling myself...

I couldn't agree with you more. If this is something a parent is imposing on their child, how can your child fully excel and be happy and something he/she doesn't truly want? This is HIS dream, in fact he had always told me (from 6th-9th grade) - that he wanted to go to MIT. The summer between 9th and 10th grade, he went to the aviation challenge camp (at the USAFA campus) - that's when his decision was made, he was set on the USAFA. I was actually not really on board with the USAFA - being an AD Spouse, I didn't really want my son to be AD too. It's not a bad life, but there are many many challenges to face. I guess I had always hoped to keep him close to home.

I want this for him, because he wants it. I'd be happy to keep him around at a JC. I know what he has accomplished and what a great kid he is (probably why i'm not ready to kick him out the door just yet). I won't be disappointed IN him, i'll be disappointed FOR him.

In 31 days, hopefully we will all have answers...

Hi CrystalLee, I can really relate with your posts. My son, has dreamed of this and worked diligently, for years to get to this point. And because he wants it so badly, his father and I want it for him just as much. I would also be happier (personally) if he had chosen a path closer to home. He is also an amazing kid, always done his best, always ready to lend a hand and has a great sense of humor. I too, am just not ready to kick him out the door. But this is HIS dream, what he really wants. We feel he deserves it, hopefully USAFA will agree. If not (although, he will be very disappointed and we will share in his disappointment) he has a great Plan B that will get him to the same place, serving this country, which is his ultimate goal.

Well fellow mailbox stalkers, it is finally March. Back in December it seemed like it would never get here. As with everyone, this has been my DS's dream since 2005. Today, his 18th birthday, I posted a picture of him on Facebook that I had taken in 2006, 1 year after he declared he was joining AFA and going to USAFA. The picture is of him with Col. James Kasler, Retired. DS is wearing an AF jacket and hat and is so honored to be in the presence of a great hero. Right now he has an AROTC 3-yr AD scholarship at ERAU. The Army has always been his 2nd choice, a close 2nd but 2nd nonetheless. As much as I'd love him to get a birthday phone call from his MOC, I know that is probably not going to happen (I can still dream, right). But I do know that we are all 1 day closer to getting answers. No matter what, our brave DD and DS's are on their way to fulfilling their destiny--how exciting for all of them and how rewarding for all us parents. Thanks to everyone for the amazing support on this thread and site--I can't imagine this ride without you all. Best of luck to everyone.

Happy Birthday to your DS!!!

Found out our MOC slot was taken. Was an early pick. Said might get another but not looking good. But she said DS was highly competitive and not to give up ALL hope. (sorry for bad grammar/puncuation on my phone). Oh and she mentioned pick was an athlete but still is charged to MOC.

There's always the national pool. Good luck! I'm right there with your DS.

I don't even know of I should tell DS or just let March play out. He might know something is up from my swollen red eyes and if I manage to recover by then my attitude - I'm not a good faker - I wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm devastated for him.

I would want to know if the MOC slot I was competing for was taken. But that's just me.

I'm assuming by your salutation that your son has a Presidential nom as well? It's far from over!

That is hard, and my heart goes out to you ChristalLee, but believe it or not kids are much more resilient than we give them credit for in every situation.

His heart will crush, but he will know the NWL still exists, and worst case scenario he has the scholarship for Plan B.

Now what to do about your DS. Some may see this as a coward's way, I prefer to see it as cutting an apron string.

Contact his ALO and inform them, ask the ALO to call him.

If you tell him, as a parent you will want to soothe him, he is a teen and will see you as a parent who must say yadda, yadda, yadda because you have to love him.

His ALO is not viewed that way by him.

You can't expect to hide this until the 1st of April. It will eat at you. He will be stressed out worrying. Let the chips fall now, and move forward.

I remember getting a postcard in the mail way back in Nov/Dec... But I don't remember what it said? I'm assuming we'd get some sort of official notification?

No the postcard was the notification.

If you or your spouse fulfilled the requirements for a Presidential it is a guaranteed nom.

CristalLee,

I don't think it is over until your DS gets a TWE in the mail, especially if your DS has multiple nominations. And even then there is always the possibility of another envelope with a Prep appointment.... as they say, "It ain't over 'til it's over".

I can second this. I thought I had a TWE coming from USNA after I didn't get a nomination, yet still got prep school. Best of luck! :thumb:

Jumping onboard

I too am a stalker. I have sought comfort from your posts and finally have jumped onboard. My DS has dreamed of attending USAFA since primary school. He was pointing out jets in the sky before he could walk. I am slightly a mess and try to refrain from asking him if he has checked his status. I am glad it is finally March one way or another Plan A Plan B Plan C. I am so proud of him whatever happens!

LFry, you're right. Pima posted this earlier...

As a devoted "stalker," I still find myself checking twice a day even knowing this. It's the suspense that's killing me! Pretty chuckalacious huh?

I know this keeps getting lost because the thread is now at 23 pages.

The AFA only updates 2X a week, if you watch this site you will see a trend. The same is true for the mailbox.

If you look at the appointment list, you will see a clear trend regarding the dates. Understand some will post the date of the letter received, others will post the letter dated. What they have in common is a 7 day difference.

Boards meet on Monday, Tuesday the AFA processes it, Wed. afternoon it is updated, and/or mailed. The AFA does not update daily. Watch this board for the appointment thread because it will light up.

In other words, you don't need to be Snoopy 6 days a week. Let's be honest, if you live in CO you will get it quicker than the candidate in Maine or AK. I would not be Snoopy on Thursday if I live in NC. I would not be Snoopy if I live in UT on Monday. You are creating an issue where the mailbox makes your stomach will turn in knots.

As others will tell you, only about 30% when they gave out 1600 apptmts found out before March Madness. It is the minority that get an apptmt prior to the mass mailing.

BTW...

Pima you talked earlier about Myrtle, your avatar, and being "Snoopy." Myrtle doesn't look at all like Snoopy so we know you're talking about US. If we're being Snoopy, then you're "Lucy," ..."The doctor is IN." Thanks for your insight and encouragement!

You should also have a Presidential nom too? Don't give up hope! It ain't over till it's over etc - it just means you will have to take a different route to appointment.

It's TOO EARLY to give up!!!!!!!!! :thumb:

Best

Check your status page under nominations - it will list all of the noms your son has in order of receipt.

:shake:

Romad is correct the portal states all noms.

I say this with every ounce of admiration, respect and love I can, so do not mis-read me.

Right now you all feel as if in the next few weeks life will be roses or dandelions.

This is so not true.

I have no bone in this fight, so I am not going to pull up last yrs mailbox stalker thread, nor the thread created shortly after called the re-applying club.

I will say what I said last yr, and what last yr parents who had children that got the TWE and swore they would re-apply. Just wait, let the emotions settle.

This site will put knots in your stomach everyday because you will think in your mind when you chime in--- after checking the portal, "Please do not have anyone new on the apptmt thread, and if so don't let it be from one of my sources"

That is normal. Many of you will get the TWE, it is just a fact. Your heart will sink, be it as the parent of the candidate or the candidate their self.

However, come next fall, this will not be on your mind as you move into your dorm. You may re-apply, or you may say, now here and looking at the C400s (C1C for AFA), I know I can get my dream AFSC and have a successful career.

Again, not taking anything away from the AFA, just stating that with time perspectives change.

JMPO, and I say this kindly. Once your child hits 18, AFA or AFROTC you are locked out, even from a medical standpoint. It is best to cut the apron string now, and make sure they take 100% control. If they are not motivated enough to contact the AFA RD, ALO or their portal, that illustrates where they are at mentally. As stated before this is their life, their time to fly.

Again, I am not implying any of you are this way, I am just saying before you get concerned about the BFE/TWE follow their lead and this would be a big clue.
