Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I have believed that a person may not receive a BFE unless he/she are triple qualified- that includes being medically cleared. Since you have received the BFE, I would be led to think that you have been medically cleared with a waiver.
It is a simple matter to check your application status in the portal. The Medical status will show clearly whether it is "Qualified" or not. I believe Shurstell is correct, however. It is possible to get a conditional appointment and I believe you would still get a BFE.

Just about had a heart attack this PM. Checked my e-mail to discover that DS's MoC office wanted his cell phone number so they could call him. The e-mail was sent early this morning, but I was so busy reading the forum between taking care of work tasks I didn't check my e-mail until about 4:50 PM. To add insult to injury he's out of town competing in a robotics competition, so probably won't be able to answer the phone even if they do call...This is just SOOO wrong. I ALWAYS check my e-mail, except today. Guess we'll have to await word until tomorrow...:unhappy:
Sounds like good news to me! Please keep us posted. What does the portal say?

I'm a professinal stalker from last year. I posted the below "story" on this thread a few weeks ago but I think it may be time to re-post with all of the new additions to the thread. Hang in there!

Hi everyone. I was right where you now this time last year. DS had applied to only two programs...USAFA and Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets/AFROTC. Unlike many on this forum who are very familiar with the application process, nomination process etc., we were totally in the dark. So much so that DS only applied for one nomination! However, he did receive a nom from that Congressman. This congressman selects a principal and then the other 9 are "alternates". This congressman also always selects a principal nom who is currently IN ROTC and a freshman in college. So DS only had a chance at being the prin nom if there were no current ROTC college freshmen in the mix. Of course that did not happen, and the prin nom was a college freshman, ROTC student. As DS had not applied for a nom from any other source, he was pretty much out of the running for a slot at USAFA. But we held out hope, until the day arrived that brought the QNV letter to our home. DS was disappointed to not have been selected but was VERY excited about his admission to VT and into the Aerospace Engineering program there. Then, a funny thing happened. We learned that the prin nom had been REJECTED by the USAFA on academic grounds. It seems that his first semester grades were WAY below par and he was out. So we thought "maybe" for DS. As luck would have it, there was one other candidate who received a nom from our Congressman who was ALSO a college freshman in ROTC, so that individual took the prin nom place of the disqualified prin nom. Oh well! However, DS was told that he was next in line and that if he reapplied his freshman year, as a member of the Corp and AFROTC, that there was a STRONG possibility that he would be the prin nom. And that became the plan for DS.

Well, a funny thing has happened. DS became infatuated with VT, the Corp and loves his AFROTC detachment at VT. He busted his butt, made the Commandants List for Academic Excellence taking 18 hours, was appointed to the AFROTC Community Liaison Committee and excelled in PT. He knew after a month or so that he would not be reapplying to the USAFA, even though his chances of being the prin nom were VERY high. Instead, he was put in the "rack and stack" nomination list by the AFROTC detachment for an in-college AFROTC scholarship. He just learned this week that he was selected by the USAFROTC HQ to receive a Type 2 AFROTC scholarship, which will cover him for the next three years...tuition, books and a monthly stipend.

When DS received the QNV letter, I will admit that I was WAY more upset than he. I thought "excellent SAT, Eagle Scout, numerous awards, a NASA Internship, etc.....are these people crazy?". However, as cliche as it sounds, things really DO happen for a reason. I know that DS is THRIVING in his current situation, and is enjoying the normalcy of a large, "normal" college situation while still being able to pursue his goal of serving his country and qualifying for Pilot.

I know that this is VERY long post, but I want to encourage the Stalker/Reapply Club to think about all of the wonderful options that exist outside of the academy. Our son chose not to pursue that path again, even with an "almost" guaranteed prin nom because he found his calling elsewhere.

I got through my range of emotions last year with the help of a very savvy member of this group, PIMA. What a blessing and voice of reason she was and I see still continues to be. I made a promise to her that I would return to this site this year and share my "story" so that others might benefit from our experience. I hope that I have honored that commitment. If anyone has any questions that I can answer, feel free to ask on this site or in a PM. I don't know a lot about the process of reapplying since DS did not choose that path, but I know a LOT about how embracing other options can and do turn out to be the best outcome. My final word of advice? LISTEN TO PIMA and heed her messages and advice. She knows of what she speaks. And good luck to all of you as you stalk, reapply or follow another path.

VAMOM, thanks for sharing your experience. Many love the rotc route as it is a middle ground between 2 extremes and an excellent route to pursue. Best of luck to you and your ds.

You are correct! DD got a conditional appointment in 2010 with the BFE. Took us about a week and a half to clear the medical and she was good to go. We did not need a waiver though. It was just test after test after test with the final test results within acceptable levels.

Our MOC has given out ten unranked USAFA nominations. I have discovered through his recent press release that two of them already have appointments as recruited athletes and two others are in the prep school. It looks like the window is closing for DS pretty quickly. I'm so nervous for him, I'm starting to lose sleep. Is it still possible for him to get an appointment in such a competitive area and with that many slots already used up?

Inhale...1...2...3..., Exhale...1...2...3..., again, Inhale...1...2...3..., Exhale...1...2...3...You get the picture.

Thanks for being there supporter/stalker friends!!

Does your son have a Presidential nom? Also - those individuals with appointments already may not have been charged to your MOC - I don't know if a Preppie is charged to a MOC either. I'm sure someone here does know the answer to that.

Just hang in there!!!!!!!

Stalking round 2.. my son received the TWE last year. This year he again received a congressional nom but also an AFROTC nom. He's on AFROTC scholorship so the world will not end if he again gets a TWE.

We haven't been on here in quite some time but it looks like a few have received the BFE. Congrats to those and good luck to the rest of us.

I can say it's a little less stressful the second time around.

I received the same news yesterday. Today I feel a little bit better, I've had some time to process the information and I realize this is not the end. Chances do look slim for us, as we do not have another nomination, but really it's out of our hands now, but at least if the BFE does come, it'll be a great surprise. I'm happy that i'm not all hopped up about the mail coming everyday... my heart would literally pound as I opened the mailbox.

Yes, I've sorta resigned. I've learned a lot, met a lot of great supporters along the way, and will do things differently when DS re-applies. Right now i'm still holding onto a tiny bit of hope for a BFE, Prep school, or last minute appt - until that time - we continue with plan B & C.

Down but not beaten.

To all the others with BFE yesterday and the phone call that will change your life - CONGRATULATIONS!

No, it's not a Presidential nom. I wish there was a way of knowing for sure who they were charged to.

I'm hanging!!! Thanks for the encouragement!

I saw your posts yesterday and my thoughts are with you! I guess we'll know when we know. I called the parents club president to ask what she thought about it. She said that because we live in a competitive area with strong candidates they sometimes give the unused noms from other areas to our MOCs (or something to that effect). It's as clear as mud! Haha!

All the best to those of you that have received your BFE's! Congratulations!

I thought that any MOC could only have 5 Cadets at the AFA at any one time. Also, I was not aware that any Prep appointments had been given (except, perhaps to recruited athletes who need some academic grooming). I thought that the Prep appointments went out after the Direct appointments were substantially completed.

Nothing has changed on DS's portal. That doesn't surprise me. From what I've heard from the "wise ones" on the forum, the portal often doesn't change until after a BFE is received...if that's even why MoC was wanting to call DS. Since Ron Paul is his MoC maybe it's because he wants DS to join our local chapter of the "Young Libertarians," and help get out the vote. :shake:

Anyway, no word yet. Hopefully DS will get a phone call today and we can find out whazup. It's after 9AM here, what's takin' so blooming' long? And I'm late for my department head meeting already. Good thing I'm the boss! :unhappy:

What you are thinking about are the preppies at the p school who have already gotten their appointments. We will need to wait until April to hear about appointments TO the prep school.

Duh! of course you are right. All this mailbox stalking is killing my brain cells.

Preppies need nominations too. Hard to believe that a single MOC got two Direct appointments and two appointments from the Prep School, though. I mean, do the math. There are 535 MOCs. If Every MOC got two appointments, that would be more than the class is allowed to be this year (1070 vs. 1050 allowed). I am sure that each MOC will get one appointment, but FOUR? I just think that is a little unusual.

The preppies I mentioned are nominations. They were identified on the press release as currently at the prep school. Two other recruited athletes have appointments already.
