Class of 2017 Mailbox Stalkers Club

I know I've been quiet this year... but the wait is torture!

It helps that I have lots of other things to focus on - we just moved & had some other life altering events.

On the bright side - the wait will be over soon - March is here and within a month everyone should have answers!

Have a great weekend all!

Parents Checking Portal

Just curious, do most parents check their DS and DD's portals?
I know my parents have the info to get into the USAFA one, but only because it is my birth date and SSN, they don't know the info for any of my other portals, and I didn't really think it was necessary to tell them. I don't think they have ever checked it themselves, but have always let that 'be my thing'.
Did you expect your kids to tell you all the usernames and passwords, or did it just come about?

ETA: I am still stalking away!

For our DS, no we never checked AFA or AFROTC. We nagged a bit to see if he had checked and what the status was! :shake: But no, we never once checked or even asked for his log on info.

I don't check my DD's portals, it's something that she does. I check this forum several times a day though..

Proud Utah Mom, please check your PM inbox, thanks.

Thanks

Medb and wishful, thanks for the replies. Glad to know I am not the only candidate whose parents aren't checking the portal :thumb:

Uh, no:)

I don't even know how to get to the portal:wink:

When my daughter was at NWP this past fall she did ask me to check her portal once because some paper work was missing and she had to walk me through the process and I never looked again.

When she got her appointment a few weeks ago she brought a laptop downstairs to show us the portal and I got to watch as she clicked "accept" and that's the last I've seen of the portal.

I always felt that if my daughter wanted to pursue this and eventually be an officer that she certainly didn't need me to check her portal:smile:

I got into the prep school and until I was offered that slot, I didn't even show them the portal. I think it really just depends, in all honesty I just left my parents out of it and took care of my application and all of that myself. They're excited I got in, but I made the decision to keep them out of the application process so I didn't have any "persuasion" or "write this, not that"

And now of course, they enjoy looking at all the YouTube videos, and reading the admissions website, and stalking this forum, just like I have for so long :shake:

If I had mentioned the portal to my parents, they would have said, "What portal?" The one glimpse of it they had was to see me accept the appointment but they didn't even know what they were looking at. I just had to slog through the process on my own.

I checked the portal as often or more so than my DS. It's a year later and I still know his SSN by heart! DH too as he was the first one to see the change to 'appointment offered'. DS didn't mind at all and was perfectly fine when we were able to give him the news ourselves.

Like what a lot of people seem to be saying, my parents really had no idea what was going on with my application process, besides what I would tell them. Applying to the Air Force Academy was MY thing and it wasn't really their place to check up my application. That isn't to say that they aren't interested in the application process! Both of my parents have read The Air Force Academy Candidate Book and my dad scours the forums on a regular basis.

Absolutely! It is YOUR thing and I am sure your parents are just as proud of you as we are of our DD:)

Like your parents we are extremely interested in our DD and have thoroughly enjoyed the entire process. We have learned so much about her and from her during the last few years! It has been a blessing to have her come to us with questions and/or news and she is the one who told me about the forums:) We look forward to all of the many adventures ahead as well!

I just know that for our DD I would not have wanted to take away that moment when she looked online and saw that she was offered an appointment:biggrin: That she chose to share the news with us first will always be a treasured moment:)

My parents were not involved in the application process either. They were just the curious parents who asked me everyday what my status was.

Congrats to everyone who got in! As for me, i'm still stuck with the other mailbox stalkers. I check my portal 10 times a day which is pointless but I can't help it. And my parents have barely ever seen my portal but recently they have been ejoying making jokes about throwing out big envelopes and ignoring calls from my congressman  oh well, only another week or two left. Stay confident and dont go too crazy :thumb:

can't agree more with you guys about doing this on your own. i honestly from day 1 didn't ask my parents to fill out an application for me or write this or do that. all they knew was that i was applying to afa, naval academy and usma and that i had to get "some sort of letter from the congressman" haha.

it is honestly a great feeling when the person who does everything for your moc tells you in front of your parents that they are surprised and glad how independent you are in completing the whole process yourself. they told me they usually have parents calling them to schedule their kids' interviews and drop off their paperwork.

i'm sure others are just like me but i really like to take things upon myself because it's my future not my parents

I'm definitely sure you guys will receive a call or letter very soon! I've just received a call from my Representative in person that I received appointment!

We were just told that we (preppies) won't be finding out until May. Congrats!

That's a huge bummer, I kind of feel the same way about us enlisted, I know of about 6 who have been accepted Direct so far, and 2 to the Prep, makes me eager. And to make me have even more anxiety, I have my BTZ board Thursday, PT test Friday, and have to sponsor a new Airman for my shop. /le sigh
