I wore a polo shirt and khakis the whole time. That was fine, though there were some people wearing jeans, t-shirts, etc. However, they did seem slightly out of place to me. (Though it was pretty funny when I was wearing my NASS sweatshirt and khakis, and an ac ensign thought I was a firstie lol) As for athletic clothing, I was there in Oct so it wasn't TOO cold in the morning. I was fine in shorts, t-shirt, and a sweatshirt.
I found that the CVW was much more relaxed for the candidates compared to NASS. So, your son is not going to get in trouble if he isn't dressed nicely enough (within reason). Other than that, ask as many questions as you can. He'll have tons of opportunities to ask questions to mids of every rank and it's a great chance to get the "inside" on USNA!
