Is an unsolicited invitation for a CVW considered a favorable sign as far as admission? Would they only invite those they think are strong candidates?
Last year DS received an invite to CVW shortly after nomination was received. It was a great experience and increased his desire to attend. We may have read more into the invitation than we should have. Even though he was 3Q he did not receive an appointment.
Yes and yes. Take advantage of it. If you have a conflict with the dates, you can request a different one.
Forgive my ignorance as this is all new, but if a person has a nomination and is 3Qd, how do they not get an appointment? Is it because someone from the same nomination slate got the appointment?
My DS also received an invitation to a CVW. His NASS application went in last week. Hopefully, this is a good sign. Does anyone know what the "qualifications" for a CVW are? How does a CVW compare to NASS? My DS may have to choose between NASS or Boys State. Any thoughts?

I see you are from KS-03, as is my DS. Where about are you, if you don't mind me asking? We are in Overland Park, Olathe schools.
My DS went to CVW last April, but was not selected for NASS. Competitive candidates are invited to CVW and I would recommend your DS attend. If the given dates don't work, he can request a different weekend. He would shadow a current Mid, stay in Bancroft Hall, attend some classes and athletic events (my DS played squash -- a first! -- with his roommates), tour some of the academic departments, and get a first hand look at life at USNA.
NASS is a marketing tool for the USNA to get those from underrepresented areas, diversity candidates, etc. a chance to see what USNA has to offer and hopefully encourage them to apply. It's in June, not during the school year. If your DS is accepted I would highly recommend he attend that also. If he has to choose between Boy's State and NASS, Boy's State is a better leadership experience and holds more weight on the WCS for his application. NASS does not -- NASS is for the candidate.
Sending you a PM soon. Perhaps my DS can talk to yours if he's interested. Sounds like yours is a junior in high school? Mine is a candidate for the class of 2018 and awaiting status of his application. Good luck to your DS!
