Early action deadline

It's not so much the fact that I was deferred; don't get me wrong, I'm extremely dissapointed. It's the fact that I had to wait until the last possible day.

Along with the hundreds, if not thousands, of others who also waited until the last possible day. Suck it up.

My DS just got his letter of deferral as well, which raises an interesting question. He was admitted to USMA yesterday. I believe he is required to make a decision within 45 days on that offer which means he has to decide by the first of March.

If the deferral letter is correct and he has to wait for the Air Force's decision until April it means he must decide on West Point without knowing his fate for the Air Force Academy.

My thought process is to give it until approximately Mid February and if he has no word to check with admissions, explain the situation and see if he can get an answer. His first choice is the Air Force but without a decision from them it could be a tough call. Any suggestions?

On the bright side, that is a very good problem to have.

DS is in a similar situation. He recieved a Naval Academy Offer of Appointment in December. This is not a bad position to be in.

deferred...

I was deferred as well. I am not too sad, I do not mind waiting. However, I am worried because my senior year grades are lower than my freshman- junior year grades. I really don't want my errors this academic year to ruin my efforts of the previous 3 years.

As long as you're not getting Ds and Fs, or maybe even straight Cs, you'll be fine.

Deferred as well...Disappointed but extremely motivated for the next couple months :thumb:

I would like to thank each and every person who has shared his or her ideas, thoughts, information and reactions on here. It takes courage to go out on a public forum for all to see and admit to fears or disappointments. Even if the poster can be anonymous, they can still see the reactions to their sharing of something personal. The anonymity may reduce or remove the sense of humiliation, but it doesn't necessarily lessen the sting. It helps others to know they are not alone. For every poster here, odds are there are at least 20 lurkers who choose not to participate.

This EA process has been particularly frustrating to many people. I think there are many reasons for this:

1) How vested they are in attending the academy. There is greater skin in the game.
2) The vague and unspecific nature of what the USAFA is looking for in EA. It's the first year, so its a work in progress. In a couple of years time, I'm sure the definition and process will be better.
3) The lack of data, as in xy% receive an EA appointment (again first year, work in progress)
4) Not many people around them to share their experiences/thoughts/ideas/feelings/reaction with. We don't know a single candidate for the USAFA (friend/acquaintance). We briefly met 3 others while waiting for nomination interview and another one at a sporting event who lives across the country. We don't know anyone who has been through this process before.

So again, thank you for sharing your frustrations! It's nice to know there are others in the same boat, and perhaps you can all learn from each other to work together and row into the USAFA shore. (I know, boats = navy, but really, an analogy of flapping arms to land at the USAFA seemed a tad bit silly, though a really humorous picture comes to mind).

Being part of the military requires team work. Sometimes team work means letting your fellows vent and voice their feelings. A leader needs to learn how to listen without passing judgement. How many leaders have not been provided necessary information because of passing judgement and not listening?

Also, a thank you to those who monitor and provide this forum. It has been most helpful!

I was wondering if the reason they waited until the last day was to see if the full slate of nominated candidates was in. If they are still waiting on one or two they can't appoint because they don't know who the best might be. Only in the principal situation or LOA where they know any nomination will suffice can they safely send the appointment offer. If you had to wait until today to hear your status it could be because they do really want you but can't commit right now. Keep the faith and good luck! I hope to see all of you in June.

^ This. The wait sucks for everyone, and nobody is entitled to any less of a wait, for any reason. EA is the opportunity to potentially hear early, and regular admissions isn't an "extra wait." No class before 2018 has had the privilege of EA. Please treat it as such- I only had a vauge "march/april" deadline for an application i completed very shortly after starting senior year in HS.

Don't think too hard about it. If I had any answer at all, it's this: they didn't have time to consider all of you. Nothing more, nothing less. There is so much to look over in every qualified candidate's file.
I had a feeling from the moment I heard about EA that it was going to get everyone's hopes up and let them down. But they didn't PROMISE you an answer by January 15th- just the possibility of one. The good news is you were able to complete your app nice and early so it's not a concern anymore. Working out will help you alleviate whatever stress you have from waiting, AND benefit you in the long run if you receive an appointment. I recommend body builders... lots and lots of body builders....

On my first time around, I didn't hear anything until I got a rejection letter in April. Second time around I didn't hear anything until I got an appointment in May. You all still have plenty of time, don't sweat it!

And "little man in the woods" if you're coming into sq 4. :thumb:

Talked to my ALO today. Here's what she made of EA.

- Only roughly 100 spots were given out in EA. Those 100+200 prep school students+100 scholarships leaves about 700-800 spots left.

- EA wasn't really for the applicants as much as it was for the admissions boards. This way the applications came in a bit more spread out.

- Some appointments may trickle out until early April.

DD deferred this AM.

It seems that she is in GOOD COMPANY. I have been so impressed with everyone's inspiring attitudes. No wonder you are all still in the running! I have witnessed the qualities of leadership in the posts I have read.

I hope it is not rude to say this: but whatever the careers you end up in, whether in the academy or not, I can see success in everyone of you!

May God guide and direct your paths.:thumb:

Well said Alaskan Mom. Everyone on here seems to be truly impressive people and will definitely be successful in the future. And that is something to be proud of.

Deferred

I was relieved when my DS was deferred. It gives him an opportunity to update his profile. Many blessing arrive in disguise!

Persevere

We found out today, Sat 1/18, at Senator's nomination reception, that DS has been accepted to USAFA and will be confirmed next week. The Senator's office was contacted yesterday (1/17) and they decided to wait until the reception today. This all leads me to believe there were "some" EA decisions out there they did not have time to make by 1/15 because they want to coordinate with MOCs, so they deferred. I spoke to the 2-star AF general at the ceremony - bottom line message "if the Academy is right for you - don't give up - there are many ways in." Some of his enlisted folks got accepted after they already had been in college a year or two and a few after they got their 4-year degrees. Hopefully you get accepted now, but if not, try try again. Don't be afraid to ask about your options. Applying after accepting ROTC scholarship, prep school, enlisted, national guard, etc. Anyway .... persevere and good luck to you all!! :thumb:

Late in posting, but also found out 14 Jan that my ds was deferred. Still trying to stay positive that he well receive an appointment over the next few months, as it is all he wants for his future. Good luck to all those also deferred and congratulations to those already notified of appointment :)
