Any hotel recommendations for Colorado Springs? Son is doing an AFA sports camp in a few weeks. He is flying by himself but we are flying there at the end of the week to pick him up and are going to stay a few extra days to do some exploring in the area, visit campus and do some sightseeing.

What hotels are recommended? Is the Academy Hotel nice? That was the first one that came up on Trip Advisor.

    Thank you for any help!

Our daughters have gone the past several summers and our you gets will be there next week as well. The Academy Hotel is not great but is affordable. We have stayed in Drury before and they are nice. They have breakfast and cocktails everyday. The one in Colorado Springs is new I believe. Any of the Hilton or Marriot brands in north Colorado Springs are nice and are near the AFA North Gate which is where you will enter campus.

We stayed at the Academy Hotel all last week during graduation. They are right outside the south gate and are very pro AFA. It is family owned and you will not find a better free breakfast in CS. (chef on duty) It is a great hotel. Unless you plan on hanging out in a hotel all day save some money and stay away from the chain hotels and stay here. There are great restaurants within walking distance and they have an indoor pool and an outdoor hot tub. The staff is very pleasant. Advice? Wherever you stay remain close to the school. The drive through campus is long enough to get to the cadet area. Don't waste time driving through town to get back to the school. That's why we always stayed on the south side of campus. Go to Manitou Springs to just walk around or try The Incline. Visit Seven Falls and Garden of the Gods. Lots to do in CS. Have a good time.

As someone who goes to the academy a lot, I go for the cheapest I can find. I'm not there on a vacation. I simply want a place to sleep. There's 26,485 restaurants. Probably 3-4 on every corner. I don't need a hotel with a great breakfast. I don't need a pool or gym. Give me a place to park my car and lay my head in a clean room. I go for the cheapest. I always stay at the HoJo. Howard Johnson. Right out the south gate.

check for hotels in zip codes, 80922, 80921, 80920, those are closest to the AFA, along with Monument. If you want to explore the Springs more, look at hotels off of Rockrimmon area and Manitou Springs

Agree with Christcorp that the HoJo near South Gate is the cheapest and most convenient place if you are only looking for a place to sleep. We have stayed there a lot. The Academy Hotel is decent but there are a lot of others that are a better value. If you want a little more "home-like" place, we like staying at the Staybridge Suites off I-25 at the Woodmen Road exit which is one exit south of Academy Blvd.

Smalltowngirl is right; A brand new Drury Inn just opened up off of I-25 and Interquest Parkway (between both Northgate and Southgate entrances to USAFA). It is within a very short walk to a Brunswick Bowling center, a movie theater and MY favorite: Colorado Mountain Brewery. CMB has awesome food and beer brewed ON premises. The restaurant was started by a couple dozen USAFA grads. Request Jeff as your server, you'll get awesome service, food and beer. (they have wine and hard stuff too... but heck the birth place of microbrews is right here in Colorado, check it out)

We agree. The Brewery is awesome and might be a good place to watch the Women's World Cup next week!

The Academy Hotel use to be a better deal. If you booked directly with them and stayed 10 times, you got a free room. That was past tense. They USE TO give a 10 dollar certificate good for the bar or restaurant even on happy hour. Most recently, they no longer allow you to use it on happy hour and they changed it so it is 50% off if you spend $20. The cookies use to be warm but last month they were dry and store bought. They use to give you a gift bag but that too is a thing of the past.

They still have a good breakfast... For now. But last month they thinned out a few items on the menu (still pretty good though). I've now concluded that you can buy a pretty nice breakfast for the $40 in savings by staying at the HOJO. In short, they lost their edge. :( If I am going to pay a premium, I will stay at the Drury Inn and no longer the Academy Inn.

If you want a nicer option, the Embassy on Woodman is a favorite. My parents always stayed there. During any USAFA events (including football games), it's usually full of USAFA types. With the free drinks at happy hour (wine/beer), its a good hang out in the evenings. DH and I are staying there twice this fall for his reunion and for the Army game.

Hornet is correct also, Embassy is pretty nice. Plus there is a Hooters, Outback Steakhouse and Old Chicago all right across the parking lot from the hotel entrance. Old Chicago has 90 Shilling on tap from O'Dells Brewery, brewed in Ft Collins, CO. IMHO 90 Shilling is the best Amber in the world..., but Andy's Old 59'er at CMB isn't far behind if you like a little more hop! Sorry to turn this into a beer thread, but it is Colorado... CMB, and the Drury Inn are about 5 miles closer to the north entrance to USAFA which will probably be the only way to get into USAFA during the current security restrictions for non DoD ID folks.

FWIW, I've been told that Hooters is out of business near the Embassy Suites but has been replaced by a Tilted Kilt which supposedly has a similar "theme"... Also just want to say:

GOOD LUCK 2019'ers; hang in there, times will be REAL tough until after recognition next spring, but all will be well worth it at the end of your USAFA journey!

Hate to hear that about The Academy Hotel. We had a good time there and every one treated us well. We enjoyed hanging out by the fireplace and relaxing with other parents..... I hope someone here knows them and passes this thread along....

Embassy Suites on just off Woodman is good deal. We stay there for Parents Weekends as there is more room to stretch out and we can prepare/eat a light meal in the room so cadets can be out of uniform to eat. Pretty good buffet breakfast every day and (for mom and dad) they have free well drinks and snacks out in the central courtyard every evening.

And as for the Old Chicago.... go for the local vanilla Porter ..... mmmmm.

We frequently stayed at the Quality Inn suites on Bijou St close to downtown COS. It has two rooms per suite, including two full bathrooms, plus full breakfaST. It is about 15 min south of the southgate. tHEY TREATED US VERY WELL AND WE OFTEN HAD TEN OR TWELVE PPL STAYING IN OUR SUITE. i THINK IT WAS Room 284 which also had a full kitcen.

Pls excuse caps. had major hand & arm surgery last week & one handed madness is taking over.

Consider the Hampton Inn or Residence Inn on Federal Way (off the Interquest exit.) Both are relatively new and very close to the North Gate, which is often the only point of access for visitors. Perhaps not the cheapest, but certainly clean, comfortable, quiet, and worth every penny IMHO.
