Immunization Questions

I highly recommend, if you can afford it, to do all the immunizations and TB test before I-day. Some of those shots (like the TDAP) cause soreness. It is one less thing to stress about in an already very stressful time that is nice not to deal with. I was unable to get my TDAP prior (I did my Hep before) and it was not pleasant.

Agree completely. DS just did his TB and Polio today plus another booster that is now required by law and he is sore. Sad cuz no one wants a shot but glad it is now vs later. :shake:

My emails are bouncing back. I was trying to ask whether I need to get a chicken pox vaccination even if I have already had chicken pox. Thank you for your help.

chicken pox vaccination

We were told that there was no need for the chicken pox vaccination if you already had them. They apparently do a test when you arrive that will confirm you've already had the chicken pox.

Immunization Question

So, the immunication record for for appointees states:
"*Note: Air Force requires all memebers to be given an adult dose of polio within 6 months of admission." Does this mean that he needs this before he arrives or does it mean that he will receive one by the time he has been there for 6 months? It also says for TB Test: "Required within six months of entrance?" Does DS need to receive these prior to entry? We have an appointment for this Wednesday to update immunizations so we want to be sure.

Required within 6 months..he does not have to have it before.

They want you to arrive with the shots/tests all done. Get what you can before you get there. They will administer the rest on I-Day. It is a tough enough day without getting extra shots to boot. Enjoy the ride. June will get here quickly. :thumb:

I took DS to our local AF base(we are Tricare Prime) for his shots last week, both of the ones you listed, TB and Polio. We went initially on Tuesday and had the TB test read on Friday. Now all we have to wait on is the Fax line to open up. I would rather he have them now than add to the stress on I-Day. I have also stressed the importance for him to carry these records on his person during I-Day.

I finally got through to our insurance company. We are getting Hepatitis A, adult polio, and meningitis done at our doctor's office for a $20 copy for the three and a check up because he hasn't been in for a while and they insist on looking him over first. Insurance will not cover the TB test so we are going to our county public health and they are doing it for $10 that same day and reading it on Friday. We will be done on Friday and it will cost us $30 total. I don't think that is too bad considering what the doctor originally charges for the shots and the poor uninsured people get stuck with. Funny that they say to send it within two weeks of acceptance and then the e-mail and fax numbers are not even up and running yet.

On page 27 of the 2011 Instruction to Appointees it says: "All cadets are required to get the necessary immunizations prior to arrival at the Academy." They may have changed it this year, but that is what they wanted for the class of 2015. I do know that whatever you can't document, you get when you're there.

Says the same thing for 2016 Appointees. Though the file is an electronic version so far this year. When you are appointed it shows up on your portal. I know there is other paperwork that needs to be filed via my 2014 cadet. The only paperwork that is available for printing at this point are: Immunizations, and the cadet sizing/measurements for uniforms paperwork. From another post I gleaned that the Fax number given has not been activated yet.

I have never gotten a Hep A shot and the form states that I need two doses, the second being at least six months after the first. I am planning on getting my first shot soon but will it be a problem that I won't be able to have my second dose done until later?

The Academy will take care of it when you're there. Just do what you can. :thumb:

It will not be a problem. They will just ensure that you get the next in the series when it is due. Hep A wasn't required in California until later in DS life. He had it in 2009. I am sure you will not be the only person requiring this immunization. If they don't give it to you during BCT, you can go to the cadet clinic after classes start and get it taken care of. Eventually they will catch up with you.
