January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Does anybody know how many points are possible on the Whole Person Score? 400 out of how many points?
Possible 1000 point Whole Person score Link;

The interviewer will assign up
to 200 points to you based upon the results of the interview. Each student can achieve
1000 Whole Person points during the interview evaluation process. Your 1000 point
Whole Person score is a merit based score made up of: 1) 250 points for your ACT/SAT
score; 2) 200 points for your scholar/athlete/leader evaluation based upon your athletic,
scholastic, and leadership achievements; 3) 200 points from your interview; and 3) 350
points are determined by the board of officers. Student’s scores are then placed in an
order of merit list (OML), in descending order, of their Whole Person point score.

I talked to my POC today in regard of the DoDMERB packets being sent without a scholarship offer, and if anyone was still wondering, DoDMERB packets were sent to applicants with a 400 or higher in the Whole Person Score.

This poor board is going to go wild now with everyone trying to figure out their Whole Person Score. From what I've read and heard there are so many different scores talked about. If this score is out of the 1000 points some have talked about, doesn't 400 seem kind of low. Well I guess it will just be one more thing for all of us to speculate about until the results come down.

My WAG (wild a$$ guess) is that if a WPS 400 score was used to send out DoDMERB notices - that it was the score prior to the board assigned their 350 points. Not a lot of point in doing it after the board, when all the select-ees have already been selected.

(ie; If in previous years, most/all of candidates scoring above - say 60% or higher/prior to board - were eventually made offers, go ahead and get them started in DoDMERB - less DQ'ed later in the year?)

That would make sense, of course not much has made sense this year. One can only hope this all gets straightend out, if not my son is going to be one awfully lonely cadet come the first day of school.

Does anyone know what the board bases their 350 points on?

I believe it is based on the entire SAL of the applicants application. The board is where they will look closer at everything such as the classes taken, athletics, and extra curriculars. I believe it is an overall evaluatiion of the application.

Agreed, DS is going to attend a school that usually has 20-25 AROTC scholarships -
so far this year there are only FOUR! (and one of those still thinking about USMA)
So I am certain the fiscal logjam will burst one of these days.

What school is your son attending.

My son will be at the University of Idaho, he has a brother that is a MS3 attending the same school.

Right now he is the only scholarship cadet they have so far this year, lets hope the log jamb breaks soon.

OK so if we're assuming that DoDMERB recipients were chosen before the 350 from the board was tacked on, we can assume that anyone who got the DoDMERB packet got at least 400/650. Just guessing here, but that looks like a pretty good score. I would guess that it's above the mean score.

I highly doubt that. The maximum available for a pre-board score of 400 would be 750. You usually have to score around 900 to get an offer.

Just curious FloridaDad, but where did you hear that number?

BTW - Looking at the criteria for the pre-board score I am pretty sure my DS is already at least a 550. He got 180+ on the interview using the form/criteria they use. On the SAT/GPA he would probably get around 180-200 of the 250 (GPA 3.5/4.6 SAT 1210). On the leadership and athletics he probably scored fairly high with varsity football and a recommendation from the Army Summer camp.

If they were sending packages out to anyone prior to the board the score would have to be over 600. Anything below that could be on the cut off line with the board points added in.

University of Alabama, last year they had about a 100 cadets on campus, (another 25? or so from surrounding schools) almost all were either scholarship or SMP... They just can not drop from 25 to 4 that's just nutty, so somethings going to happen

Trumps my information

Two years ago when we first started looking into AROTC scholarships an ROO said the first board cut-off was about 750 and then decreased with each subsequent board but I suppose the existence of ectoplasm is just as believable.

Is that total or just freshman?

Remember a lot of cadets are none scholarship. Also, some schools have a decent number of in school scholarships as well.

Having seen the quality of the applicants on this board I think 750 would be on the low side. It might have been OK three years ago but its pretty competitive now.

Everyone still agrees that receiving a DODMERB packet after the Jan board is a good thing right?

I think the general consensus is it means absolutely nothing.

No, I think it's more that nobody knows for sure. There would be no reason to send out DoDMERB packets at random; therefore, there is some reasoning behind it all. Hopefully.

Sorry I should be more specific, I meant Total Contracted Enrollment

"2009-2010 Enrollment. Peak contracted enrollment was 92 Cadets (64 on scholarship contracts and 28 on non-scholarship contracts). This is a net increase of 12 from last year. All of the non-scholarship Cadets, except one, are members of the Army National Guard or Army Reserve participating in the Simultaneous Membership Program."
