January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Actually Ohio, if your DS's school is anything like our 2 kids schools, they get the wake up call at Mid-Terms regarding classes.

As far as food goes, the hardest part for me was readjusting making dinner. I was so accustomed to feeding the entire family that for the 1st few weeks my fridge was filled with every leftover you could possibly think of. The dogs loved it! Of course, when they come home, I am accustomed to making less and the dogs get nothing! They have yet to figure out that it is the boy's fault they don't get human food.

DS wil be SOL if he waits until mid-terms, 3 of his classes only have 4 grades taken for the entire quarter. Lucky for him, test taking is a very strong skill, provided he READS the material and pays attention in lectures:thumb:

Agree, cooking for fewer and fewer people is a guessing game at best. Most of my receipes are for a family of 5(3 of them good eaters, me and DD less so) It might take a little while to get used to NOT buying the family packs of certain foods, or dividing them before freezing. DS will get his moneys worth on the meal plan!

Our dog is also going to enjoy my mistakes for a while, to stupid to ever figure out why he'll get more and then less....11 years old and senile:biggrin:

Boys make money on the meal plan; girls on the hot showers at college - figure it all balances out.:shake:

ABSOLUTELY. DD currently at home - wow, the amount of hot water she uses is incredible. Two a days everyday....

Just had a phone call from DS....not impressed with his first 2 classes(Russian and Public Speaking). Dropping Russian as planned, only sooner - prof not very organized, DS hates unprepared people. Public Speaking prof is a Hungarian immigrant -- barely understandable, had the bookstore selling the incorrect book so all of them have to go back....DS really not thrilled with the idea of public speaking being taught by a prof with such poor English. Hope the afternoon classes go better - Bio and Sociology...

At our kids 2 colleges. GUYS are boffed on the meal plan because it is not X amount of meals, it is Y amount of dollars. Inevitably by the end of the semester the guys are eating only because somebody has money left over.

Our DD had so much money left over she purchased a case of gatorade, case of Red Bull, case of water and two sheet pans of rice krispy treats to study with her friends for finals. She laughed because all fall semester guys weren't on her floor (co-ed, but by floors), the last few weeks they were all scurrying around on her floor looking for food. Guys they were friendly with were called the mice, guys they didn't like were called cockroaches, because both come out looking for food!

DS1 had so much money left over he took 5 of his buds to the dining facility that serves surf and turf their last Sunday before finals. He of course is 5'10 and 145 lbs, never eats breakfast. Our DS2 is 6'4 1/2 and 260 lbs, he will have to rely on a friend like DS1 and DD2 by the end of the semester if he is to survive on the min plan like we purchased for our other 2.

That is the problem with colleges that have quarters or tri's your back is up against the wall immediately. That makes it hard for a kid use to semesters to understand you don't have a lot of opportunities to get it right!

Update re FTX

We started this journey together months ago. Wondering if anyone has any FTX stories to share. DS tells me feet are bruised and battered because boots don't really fit. Thinks Nike boots might be a good choice because he likes Nike tennis shoes. Anyone with any experience? Bates were suggested also. Is there anywhere you can try these on before purchase? DS says Oakley gives a big discount but he would rather have right fit than cheapest option.

DS loved obstacle course or maybe it loved him. DS said the flooded marsh with water up to his waist caused a bit of a slowdown with land nav :shake:.

DS said he had a blast but was pretty tired when things were over. Was glad that the sleeping bag has a waterproof liner because it rained most of Saturday night. Said his squad did really well on nav, only 1 point deducted daytime and perfect score for nighttime. Thought shooting M16s on the range was great and also liked the obstacle course.

I'll try and find out what brand of boots he was issued, because I asked him and he said he hasn't had any problems with blisters, etc. Also planning on putting some mole skin in his next care package just in case.

MNDad has it right...send them moleskin. It will be a blessing to them. You can find it at CVS or Walgreens. It is small, you can place it in an envelope, but it is a lifesaver.

Family has the type of feet where we throw away the shoes and wear the box so was thinking it might cost a little more than moleskin to solve the problem but thanks for the moleskin reminder.

My son'd school has not had their FTX yet, they do it the latter part of October.

As far as boots, both my sons purchased Blackhawk boots from Rangerjoes.com. The boots seem to fit well give great support and are within regulations.

You might want to try MoleFoam, it is thicker then the traditional Moleskin so you can tape over it without pulling the skin from the blister.

It's interesting this year, my older son is a MS4 and is in charge of planning FTX and my younger son is a MS1 at the same school and will be doing his first FTX, a real family affair this year, they get to compete together on the Ranger Challenge Alpha Team this year, a real treat for the younger one.

My son didn't have much choice in boots (brand was prescribed), but the Bates boots have been fantastic for his. He put a heavy dose of "Camp-Dry" on them (three coats), and they worked well.

Also, high-quality insoles (like the kind you find at a running store, not Walmart) are very key for both low quarters, field boots, and running shoes (the stock in-soles that come with really good running shoes are garbage for the most part -- I'm not sure why the manufacturers make a quality running shoe and then skimp on in-soles, but they do).

My FTX is coming up this weekend. It's gonna be a blast! Quite literally, when we first get there we get to spend time on an M4 range and a machine gun range :guns4: . We also get to use blanks for the STX lanes which should add a sense of realism to the situations. There's a rumor going around that us contracted cadets are gonna be able to take a ride in a Blackhawk too!! I just have to hope my feet hold up :thumb: I'm really excited for it!

Sounds like a great weekend in the woods.

Just to give you a taste of what can be available to you in the future if you work hard and get just a little lucky, this was my son's experience at CTLT this past summer.

Since he had gone to Airborne School and was #1 on the battalion OML he was given a CTLT with the 82nd Airborne Infantry at Ft. Bragg. The day after he arrived they drove him out to meet up with a Company that was training for deployment Oct. 1st.

The first day he was there they set up a defense perimeter all day and then defended the camp at night...all practice. He did well that day and a Capt came up to him and told him that a Platoon was without a PL because he had just left for Ranger School, he told him "The platoon is yours for the rest of the week" needless to say he was a bit nervous.

The next day they trained clearing houses and buildings, after a dry run they told them to go get loaded up, he wasn't sure exactly what that meant at first until the handed him multipl magazines filled with live ammo, then it clicked. The next 2 training sessions was with live ammo, they entered the houses and buildings and had targets set up all over and they had to hit the right ones, in his words...."Bullets were flying everywhere" All this while they were sending M40's over their heads blowing things up before they entered. He thought that was the best until later when they said they were going to do it all over again at night with night vision, that quickly beacame the best. They did this for 3 days.

A few days after they ended the exercises he joined the other LT's for a Walk and Shoot, basically the spent the day calling in Apache and F-18 fire, then they called in Artillery fire well into the night, that was until some stupid ^&$@#* loaded a shell incorrectly and dropped it 70 meters from where they were. If it had not fallen into a culvert that just happened to be there he probably would not be coming home. The 105mm has a kill radius of about 80 meters, they were 70 meters from the impact. An investigation was launched right away, he was told when he left that there were at least 3 enlisted and 2 officers that had just become unemployed civilians.

All in all it was a very exciting 3 weeks, the one thing that came out of it was he decided to branch Aviation, go figure. Oh and one other thing, always make sure you load the shells correctly, the Army doesn't look kindly on blowing up it's own.

ROTC has a lot of opportunities, just do well and you can take advantage of some great things, just don't get blown up...HaHa.

Just want to add another suggestion, try Danner boots. My D was originally issued boots too small and ended up with lots of blisters than got some too big. Ordered Danner boots and she is very happy with these. They come in smaller sizes for the females. I want her to get a second pair but she's a bit stubborn right now. Forgets that mom might actually know something. I remember back in the day we had to put a little white dot on the other pair so we could make sure everyone rotated their boots.

Agree with the above to try Danner boots. Great quality and they come in various widths! Pricey but your feet are worth it!

Nikes are working

DS decided to order Nikes since he has worn their tennis shoes and liked the fit. Their toe boxes have an obliquer cut but also the heel is lower with a smaller tread then some; this lower heel seems to be a real plus for DS. Delivered in less than 24 hours for no additional cost. Totally worth the money.

Well, somebody sold him a bill of goods with that "investigation" outcome rumor, but if it made him feel better, I suppose it doesn't matter.

At least he figured out a smart branch.

Bear in mind that Nikes do not wear well. The sole is lighter and more foam-like than a vibram sole. They will wear out faster and don't offer as much ankle support. But they're comfy.

Care to elaborate on that a bit,

He did recently receive word that there ended up being only 2, the person who loaded the shell and a Sgt., that are going to be discharged.

So I take it from your comment that your stationed at Ft. Bragg, and must have been involved with the exercises that went on that day.

No I don't think any outcome made him feel better, I didn,t know all investigations end in rumor, I'll have to remember that. I better go back and check the files of every investigation I was ever involved with during my time in the service to make sure the outcome was not just a rumor.

The "Outcome" was a bit different then he was told 3 days after it occured, but the "Investigations" do take time.

They must have sold that Bill of Goods to his Lt. Col. (PMS) Since a ROTC cadet was involved he received a copy of the report and relayed the information to my son.

The jury's still out on which is the smarter Branch.
