January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

I have just learned from a very reliable source that the AROTC Board results have been delayed due to inclement weather in Kentucky. No expected date has been set for notification, but was advised to check the site next week.

In short, I don't think the results will be delayed until the end of February.

 I live in KY just down the road from Ft Knox.... it wasn't "that bad".

Just got an email back from the ROO at UK. He said "I would expect you to know something by end of next week. I have been told the board is completed…and that Cadet Command is finalizing offers."

UK would possibly confirm the first statement.... we will have to hold our breath and hope for that to hold true..... we're all getting good at that, aren't we?

ah, doesn't Cadet Command wish they'd re-located next to Navy NSTC in Pensacola, Flm instead of Ft. Knox, KY?

Well... all's well that end's well. I guess this means I'm no longer apart of everyone's conversation and hope! Guess that means I'll have to start my own thread come March to protest... something!

@redleg- great post!

DS received a very nice email from the PMS at his #1 choice school today. It said offers should be released in February but that because Congress has not approved the Army's budget, they expected fewer offers from this board than usual. Even though that is disappointing news, in general it was a very positive email and DS still found it encouraging for his chances at the school and with the battalion.
I was impressed that the PMS initiated contact with us. We are still in the waiting game, but I have decided to not let it stress me anymore. As many have said here, it is out of our hands.

@ohioparent - enjoy date night and Happy Anniversary! As for me, it's back to the tables!!

Sounds like we are all getting a mixed messages from people who should know.

P-please DO NOT take the word of two parents on a internet forum as gospel truth, please contact your POC for confirmation of if you were boarded for January or not. This January board has broken from previous patterns and no one seems to know anything for sure. I will still be around in March too, regardless of if my DS does end up earning a scholarship from current board.
One way or another I want to see when YOU post your results.

Jkcksoup- my DD attends EKU in Richmond-she also was puzzled about the whole weather was bad...the school was on 2 hr delay a few times, but even the commuter campuses near by were open??

The ROO from DS 1st choice school is teaching a Recuiting Officers course at Ft. Knox (since Thursday-11FEB), I sent him an email, but will have to see what his time allows down there to get back with us.

Also, thank you for your DH service. He may be the one doing it, but the ones at home "serve" too!!

Thanks Ohio  (My Hubby is honored to serve.)
The weather report, move to Ft. Knox, internet issues.... are a few reasons that have been given for the delay. But as I was having dinner with my hubby last night we both chuckled and agreed, there is a delay, no matter what the reason. I hope it's only a week, but I'm counting on the end of February.... or beginning of March. Why? Because we are conditioned to "hurry up and wait". That's the Army way.
Since not everyone even has acceptance letters to the more selective schools this may actually benefit you since it will allow more time for those decisions to come thru. Anyhow, its not what we were expecting, but really, has parenting ever really been what we expected??? More teachable moments.
I love how you look at the glass half full Ohio. That's really how I look at it too. We have too, otherwise we would drive ourselves to the funny farm. :yllol:

:tank1: (I'm having way too much fun with these "smiles". LOL!)

Thanks Ohio! But it was my POC via email. I called a few weeks ago and she said I was up for January's board. But, yesterday, she said because I only out one school I would have to wait.

Quick question for the very smart posters in this thread:

It is my understanding that CC gives AROTC scholarship offerees 30 days to accept/decline the offer. What if we indicate on, say, day 20 that "regretably, there has been an unexpected delay but the offeree will endeavor to get back to CC at some point in the future"?

Do you think that CC be very accommodating?

So sorry you have to wait longer, but at least you did get confirmation from the source. Heads up, ARMY STRONG!!

I also have a question. Say I recieve the scholarship and accept it. Then, next year, I recieve the NROTC marine option scholarhsip, the one that I prefer. Or, am accepted into the USNA or USMA. Am I allowed, after the first year, to reject the scholarship after using it for that year. I know with nrotc you can use it for a year, with nothing binding. Is this so with ARTOC? Also, where can I find a list of the bennies of the AROTC schoalrship? The website is being complicated.

Completely agree, this confusing process just gets more and more twisted as we go, control what we can (our own situations and attitudes) and try to find something good/teachable out of this.

Hope end of next week is the correct answer to our question, but at this point DS is moving on to picking classes for 1st quarter next year and figuring out alternative housing for on campus-if he's not a contracted cadet he can't live with them on campus in the AROTC dorm:frown: Oh, well, things sure do seem to change on a dime so no sense getting too worked up either way.

I honestly have no idea, but I'd talk with the NROTC contacts about this situation. Personally, wouldn't want my AROTC PMS/ROO to know I was thinking about switching - might not be your best first year experience....

The bennies of the AROTC are more campus/college dependent from what we have read here and other places (goarmy.com site forums). Some offer the housing/board etc...so I'd start with the school/s you have now on your application.

:yllol:CC accommodating???????Patentesq, you give me the giggles:yllol:

Honestly, I would doubt it, but see if you can PM Clarkson or gojack(the king of all links military related!) That's who I'd check with.

Thanks. Yeah, I definitely would keep it on the low. If I recieve either scholarship then I'm going to the Citadel in SC. The Admissions Office said people switch ROTC's every year, sometimes more than once. They don't have a problem with it. But I don't know the Army's POV

Good. Glad you already have looked into the situation. DS is only applied for AROTC so we haven't studied a lot of difference between the branches. Citadel good however you get there. DS considered Citadel, VMI and North Georgia early on in his researching colleges. What other schools did you add to you application? Maybe other posters will have suggestions about the whole "switching" thing at those schools too.

I added Campbell University and the University of NC at Pembroke. The only schools in NC with Nrotc are Carolina and NC State. Campbell director of ROTC (I completed my interview there) said he would be willing to offer me an ROTC scholarship and academic scholarship to cover everything the AROTC scholarship didn't. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if the offer still stands if I dont get the AROTC scholarship! hahahaha but oh well. I was told that there was an exception to the scholarship if you were accepted into a service academy, but i dont know if that means ANY service academy or just the one for that branch (I.e., AROTC for USMA/ NROTC for USNA). I guess its something I'll just have to look into. However, I am rather glad I have had my application moved into March, as that is the same time I hear back from the USNA and NROTC. If I recieved it this month, I would have to accept it and use it, not knowing if I get into USNA or NROTC...Or, take the wrenching risk of declining it and having to see if i got the other...

anxious mom

What a great site! Thank you all who have posted. Glad to hear many of us parents are just as anxious. I'm hoping someone can give me a little insight with a few things. My son has applied for AROTC. He obviously didn't qualify for the 1st board. He completed EVERYTHING back in July. Just yesterday, he received a letter stating he did not have his list of schools and might not be considered if he doesn't get this in within 15 days of receiving the letter. He did have his schools listed, only he had to list them via-email, because on the application 2 of the schools were not listed, BUT did have an ROTC program at their schools. His POC emailed him back confirming his list of schools have been put in. We were very confused, and have emailed the battalions for his top 2 schools to see if they know what happened. He has been in contact with the battalions for a few months. He has some kind of relationship with them. Does anyone know if this means he did not qualify for the 2nd board because of this? so frustrating. We have called the 'number' they have on the letter, but it says mailbox full.
Next question: what is the Dodmerb packet? My son has already been qualified, or is there something we are missing?
Any comments or advice would be most helpful.

Welcome!

The DodMERB is the Department of defense Medical Examination Board. When CC(cadet command) feels that your son had a strong application they send him the packet. But we have learned that this is not an indicator of a scholarship. Now, you say he has already qualified?
