January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

January 30th

What a great site! Thank you all who have posted. Glad to hear many of us parents are just as anxious. I'm hoping someone can give me a little insight with a few things. My son has applied for AROTC. He obviously didn't qualify for the 1st board. He completed EVERYTHING back in July. Just yesterday, he received a letter stating he did not have his list of schools and might not be considered if he doesn't get this in within 15 days of receiving the letter. He did have his schools listed, only he had to list them via-email, because on the application 2 of the schools were not listed, BUT did have an ROTC program at their schools. His POC emailed him back confirming his list of schools have been put in. We were very confused, and have emailed the battalions for his top 2 schools to see if they know what happened. He has been in contact with the battalions for a few months. He has some kind of relationship with them. Does anyone know if this means he did not qualify for the 2nd board because of this? so frustrating. We have called the 'number' they have on the letter, but it says mailbox full.
Next question: what is the Dodmerb packet? My son has already been qualified, or is there something we are missing?
Any comments or advice would be most helpful.

Welcom mchale. If you DS is medically qualified its sounds as if he already has completed DodMERB (the letters came under the name of Concorde and you took him for an eye exam and physical, right?) I have no idea about this school list issue that has come up. My own DS only has 3 schools listed-OU, EKU and Uof Cincy. Hoping we didn't get the letter and it got lost in the mail....imagine that one.:unhappy: He's emailing his own POC today. I'd check with your DS's POC to clarify whether he was boarded or not. Pieterm(another poster)unfortunately was told by his POC that he wasn't boarded in Jan. as he had been lead to believe. Keep hanging out with us...they have to post results sometime........

because on the application 2 of the schools were not listed, BUT did have an ROTC program at their schools.
TWO schools not listed on the application? Which ones? PM me if your shy:rolleyes:
He has some kind of relationship with them.
Have him call the PMS/ROO at his schools and ask if his application was boarded
Does anyone know if this means he did not qualify for the 2nd board because of this?
See above (IF the ROO/PMS are intrested in getting your DS onboard, they are you best point of contact, be polite, persistent and patient.

Dodmerb packet= After he is offered a scholarship, Dodmerb will mail him a packet with instructions on how to complete the mandatory Dodmerb medical exam...This is step 2 of the process, unrelated to being offered a scholarship

If he is medically qualified, you should have a letter from DODMERB stating;
"Service Academy/ROTC Medical Qualification as of xx/xx/2010"
"US ARMY ROTC QUALIFIED"

OhioParent: I talked to a junior at UC who is in ROTC. He said that UC expanded their program by 40%. He told me they are basically giving 4 yr. scholarships away.

Hope this helps

Are you sure you understood him correctly? The AROTC scholarship environment was substantially different 2 and 3 years ago when this junior might have been applying for a scholarship.

Yes. The University of Cincinnati has been putting out very very strong cadets. The Government noticed this and gave them an increase in funds last June. I have heard this from two different sources.

Thanks for the info...UC has been improving their AROTC program A LOT. LTC Bausch, their ROO, is AMAZING! This was our first visit to an AROTC program and he explained so many things so well we were left with very few questions(other than when do they post the results.....). UC is DS 3rd choice school however since he would live AT HOME FOR THREE YEARS, the dorms at UC are horribly expensive and ROTC can only supply freshman year housing. Last Feb, when we started all this, DS was considering Civil Engineering major, UC has outstanding engineering programs, period. So now that his major/interest changed it also bumped UC down his list a little. It is our "backyard school" where most of his high school ends up attending-often referred to as the Colerain High annex....he really wants to move away a little, BUT IF UC is the only offering school, he will get over it!!!

A great school to look at for engineering or medical programs-keep it in mind if you are just starting out looking at schools, ie our new 2016 applicants.

Not if he gets a scholarship...
The University of Cincinnati provides Tuition, Room and Board incentives to Army ROTC scholarship recipients Link

My DS over-nighted there, The scholarship winners were on free room and board.
The cadets bought him all his meals, they told him they such a generous meal plans that they always had
money left over at the end of the semester.

(DS Liked UC, but wanted to get further away from home, and somewhere warmer)

Glad to hear they changed their offering to all 4 years room and board, when we were there last February it was only freshman year and then you were on your own.

January 31st

Has anyone been offered a scholarship from the Jan 4th board?

Welcome to the thread, Trojanparent. As Government stated, we have not be informed of the results and have no idea when that might occur. Please hang out with us while we wait. It should be sometime this month.

Another Monday:rolleyes:

I think that would be within the next month, as in the next 30 days.

Regarding "you didn't list enough schools..."

My son got an email response from Ms Butler at USACC this morning regarding the "your file is not complete because you did not list 3 schools letter" that several of the applicants have apparently received in the past week. She confirmed that listing 3 or more schools was NOT a requirement, and that if he wanted to proceed with only the two schools he had listed on his application, he could do so and she would make a notation in his file. Don't know what lead to the letters, but I guess anyone who wants to proceed with just their original schools can ask for the same "notation."

FWIW;

DS was told that after he accepted scholarship/started at his chosen school, he could only transfer to another AROTC Battalion if it was listed on his application.

So DS put his 'dream school' (UT Austin) on his app to leave open - the possibility of a highly unlikely transfer - after his freshman or sophomore year.

...Listing a Vanderbilt type school (expensive, very selective w/great financial aid) as a choice would probably not hurt ones chances

Good morning everyone. Not much to say, just logging in to post yet one more date. I found it much easier to follow threads that had frequent dates on them - it gives a better sense of how much time passes over the life of a thread.

Hope everyone is safe in light of the ice/snow/blizzard conditions over most of the US - swOhio escaped with only glazing of ice.

School email today

First choice school ROO just sent an email saying they have no results yet from the Jan board meeting. Sounds like they are waiting results
too. All in this together.

January Scholarships Cut

Cadet Command announced that the number of scholarships that were to be offered based on the results of the January board have been cut from 1000 to 750. That is probably why the scholarship notifications have been delayed.
