January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

We are trying to decided if we should appeal for a transfer.

Does anyone know the process for this? And what factors affect the likelihood of it taking place? Is there a chance of losing the scholarship if you attempt the transfer and that doesnt work out? NMS*17, have you found out anything?

You need to accept the scholarship where it is. Once the dust has settles, they may be willing to transfer the scholarship to another school on the list if there are two things

1) An open allocation (spot) at the school
2) They are accepted to the school. Proof of acceptance will be required.

Not sure how Cadet Command is handling the transfers this year and whether or not they will be willing to do so prior to the last board. No matter what happened last year or in previous years and no matter what advice you get on here, only Cadet Command give you the answer on how it is being handled this year.

A letter will come sometime in late April asking if you are still keeping your school of intent. It will ask if you would like to try and use it at another school and that they will take that into consideration.

Cadet Command will discuss a transfer only when they have mailed out the letters. As far as they are concerned, that letter is their official offer.

Good luck!

I'm in a similar boat, but my scholarship is to schools I didn't apply to and have NO interest in attending. I've already been accepted to Auburn and WVU, my top two choice schools. How do I go about appealing this? Can you appeal for a different major (I don't want to, but I will if necessary) or can you just appeal for a different school?

Thanks!!

Is this automatic or do we need to initiate the transfer request prior?

I received a 4 year scholarship to northeastern, but I am going to try to get it transfered to colorado at boulder.

cjs is right on

This is what Cadet Command told me this morning. They said to accept the offer, and then when the letter comes in April, to get a letter from the school saying you are accepted and then send in the appeal.

DS received offer of a 4yr AROTC scholarship from University of ND, #1 school of choice (posted per CC scholarship status). He is so excited!

Congrats to all those who received offers! It has been a long wait, but well worth it. Thanks to all those who post and teach us newbies what to expect.

The letter that comes with the scholarship offer needs to be signed and dated with the box checked next to the school you wish to use the scholarship at. If you were only offered 1 choice, there will only be one box and one school of course.

Then another letters comes late in the Spring.

Here is the letter from last year. They were due to come out in April, but the letter is dated May 17, 2010. If you do a search, you should see that everyone got these letters in May.

Even though I don’t have a dog in this fight, I am addicted to this thread! I am so jazzed for each and every one of you who are finding out positive results! I am only really familiar with how SAs work and have always thought that I need to learn more about how ROTC works. By following this thread, you all have bestowed upon me a PhD in the AROTC process. I always knew about the ‘you may get a scholarship, but you can only use it at these schools, but you may not get into these schools’ which I thought made no sense. Now I know that nothing about the AROTC process makes sense at all! I guess it is their way of getting you primed for life in the military, where someone else is in charge of your fate, you often have to wait around to hear from them, and sometimes what they decide makes no sense. It is just an exercise in acclimation, really.

I wholeheartedly agree with Pima’s statement about it not being over until you decide it is over. Walk-on, try again next year, whatever it takes! I have seen many people over the years who did not take the initial ‘no’ for an answer from an SA and persisted, ultimately earning themselves a slot. I have no doubt that the fine young adults in this group will persevere in whatever manner it takes to one day raise their right hand and take that oath.
Support and defend, baby….support and defend!

dogdoc, I suspect CapeRunner is scratching his head right now. He'll get the joke the minute he returns home for Thanksgiving break and tries to explain to his friends what he's been up to for the last few months.

You, sir, made me laugh. I learned early on that there was a Norwich University in VT and a town named Norwich in CT. Stuff happens, I guess.

And, someone sent me a message asking about stats. I'll go with what's relevant.

1420 on SATs (2120 in the new system)
90 on ASVAB
3.89 GPA
Have not taken APFT, but did 40 push-ups in 1 minute, 50 sit-ups in one minute, and a 5:34 mile for Presidential Fitness Challenge as required by ROTC application.

That's all I can think of for vitals. Secondary vitals:

4 scores of '5' on all four AP examinations taken so far
4 years varsity XC; team captain senior year
3 years varsity track; senior season incoming
Eagle Scout

Anything else someone is wondering about?

Also, a question of my own: What does 'DS' and 'DD' stand for?

"Also, a question of my own: What does 'DS' and 'DD' stand for?"

Not completely sure myself, but maybe it is a variable, like X in an equation. I'm thinking "Dear", "Dearest" or "Darling", but it COULD also be "Delirious" or "Darn" or "Dreadful". The "S" and second "D" are for son or daughter.

DS received scholarship to Norwich University (his first choice) :)

Basic Stats:

3.3 GPA (at prep school)
1460 SAT (math and reading) overall 2060
4 year varsity swimmer

I am just curious, if you don't mind me asking, what schools did you originally list on your application.. Which schools did they offer the scholarships. Have you spoken with the ROO's at the schools you listed, are they all full. Was the scholarship you applied for a Nursing Option.

It would be nice to have some more information for others that might see this happening to them. We saw this happening last year during the final board to a few applicants.

ahhhh.... I was deleting emails today when suddenly my friend tells me she got a e-mail saying she got a scholarship. I don't know if i overlooked one or something. i checked my status and it's still the same, but after hearing some of the strange occurrences about that, i don't know what to believe. I'll just wait a week for a letter....

Tenin,

You could simply contact a ROO at one of your schools(perhaps were you did your interview)and ask them to check for you. If you did not receive a scholarship you will not recieve a letter either. They do not send out "ding" letters until well after the final(March 8)board. Hope this helps.

There is no black and white answer on this. If both schools are in the same brigade it is a much easier process. It the school you wish to transfer to is more expensive then it is a very difficult process.

If you have a letter from the school showing that you were not accepted you would be in a much better bargaining position.
