Woah, NavyHoops, I was the one that said the schools conservative-ism had nothing to do with the cheerleaders? I think you were intending that for Conan
Just my two cents - right now there seems to be lack of interest in cheer squad and the AD leadership is not really very supportive and cutting costs - its a public college but funding by the state is really very small. Add to this there is a gulf issue going on between the Corps and the Corp Squad - athletes. Plus the football team and basketball teams are not winning. Add all this up and maybe this is a reason. One factor that may turn this around a bit is that the Corps of Cadets will be moving from the visitor side of the stadium back to the home side for the 2014 Football season. They were moved when the stadium was refurbished and seasons ticket holders were buying home side seat licenses. After a mighty effort by Alumni - this is changing and the Corps will be where they belong - which should increase spirit. Regards
its a problem at VMI and the FSAs as well; there is resentment because of the perception that athletes get out of too many military obligations like formations, drill, parades and inspections but conveniently overlooked is the fact that they pay a price in lack of free time due to practices, workouts and other obligations, at The Citadel all football players including new recruits spend their summers on campus taking summer school courses and attending workouts. Of course winning teams quickly tend to make the rank and file forget their hangups.
Don't flaunt your sexuality and you'll be fine, stay away from flamboyants and overt gays, remember this is South Carolina and a majority of the students are from there, it's the bible-belt regardless of what the official word is. Overall if you want a really accepting academy I would think Norwich would be your best bet. However from talking to friends of who have also attended and still do attend Senior and Federal Military colleges it is seen as a laughing stock due to the overt gay pride. Just my input and advice.

Norwich is a "laughing stock" among other SMCs?

You've got to be kidding me, seems to me that the issue is more with those doing the laughing.
I'm glad I found this. I was looking up some stuff about the citadel and the LBGT community. I'm gay, but I'm not out yet, and I've been planning to come to the Citadel (I'll matriculate this fall). Recently, I've been stressed out because I figured that I would be alone in the core. Seeing your post actually makes me feel a whole lot better. It's good to know that I won't be completely alone when I go. Are you planning on doing CSI?
It's "corps", not "core".
If I were you, I wouldn't come out, at leastnot during knob year. As a knob, nobody really cares about your personal issues. You'll just be a knob. The best thing to do is keep your head down, do what you are told, when you are told and don't draw attention to yourself.
