March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

I've been reading threads from all over the forum. Seeing the AFROTC EA slots announced, the SAs seem to be mailing out their BFE/TWE envelopes and NROTC updating their websites....the good news and bad news is awe inspiring. So many lives being changed with one decision that is the culmination of a lot of little decisions and plans over weeks, months and years of these young peoples lives. Not to mention us parents.

DS is off having fun - like a high school senior should on spring break - I'm sitting here terrified of the AROTC board results due out oh, whenever next couple of weeks. He has amazing opportunities in front of him either way, but hearing the heartache in the posts of those not getting good news lately, makes my own heart hurt for them and potentially my own DS. It will be what it is supposed to be, but I'd sell a limb or something else precious to me for him to see the "you may check your medical status...." AROTC portal update when it happens. NOT knowing is almost better than knowing its a no.

Thanks for letting me vent a little. Congradulations to any who read this who have received their great news. To those who didn't - don't take no for the final answer, chase the dream - your path may just be a little different.

You will climb over that wall, Ohio.

@Ohioparent... just for fun - I'll take March 31st. Won't put $$ on it, need all we can for college - but surely it is worth putting a margarita on the line

It looks like it won't be today :frown:; so...margaritas all around !!:beer1:

Thanks for the boost. Its been rough in Ohioland lately. Sorry to read about some of your DS's dings, but I'm glad his path is becoming clearer:smile:

I'll drink to that! good to see you're still around ksmom, was thinking about you and jkcksoup too the other day. Paradoxer is out on a college visit w/her DS.

Should we all just make a date for 4/8, same time same place...?

I'm still rooting for your DS. I truly hope that you all get some great news shortly.

These budget crunches seem to be effecting many. My DD is finishing her first year teaching first grade in Orlando and is anxiously waiting to see if they renew her contract for next year. It really doesn't look good and she is just besides herself. She worked so hard for this and has such stellar reviews so it hurts me to watch her go through this.

My fingers are crossed for you all!

Hey, cjs, good to hear from you too. We can use all the kind thoughts we can get coming into the last board.

The budget issues are hitting a lot of people close to me also. DH is a firefighter in Ohio(not union, but still affected) and DD is also planning a career in education. She recently changed her major from Secondary Chem/Physics to Middle Grade math/science. Its going to be an extra year of college, but probably a good change for her. But, a lot of loans and hard work into a degree that may not have high demand like it did a few years ago. Hope the school district picks ups your DD's contract. A lot of nail biting all over.....

Thanks, Ohio2015Parent! This is going to sound really weird, but accumulating "dings" is actually the goal!

Whenever a DS/DD casts his or her net broadly, s/he must expect and embrace "dings". If the student doesn't get "dinged", then s/he hasn't cast his or her net broadly enough.

In the world of patent law, the overwhelming common strategy among practitioners is to get rejected when the patent application is filed. Sometimes, when a patent application is filed, the patent office accepts the application right away without any push-back whatsoever. And then the practitioner is left to wonder: "Gee, shouldn't I have asked for broader patent claims?" In contrast, if the patent is rejected, the applicant can then narrow the breadth of the patent claims to ultimately get the patent accepted. If a practitioner aims for the rejection in this manner, then he or she knows better where the outer bounds of the claimed invention really are.

In my experience, the only folks who never get dinged are those who are afraid to get dinged and didn't stick their neck out. These are the very same people who do not reach for the stars. Over time, getting "dinged" is the least of their worries.

That's just my approach to the "crap-shoot" world of scholarships and college applications. There are so many arbitrary issues that come up (like major, etc.), that "dings" have to be par for the course. The only way to deal with this is to apply for EVERYTHING and let fate guide you.

Besides, getting "dings" is good for my DS -- they will make him humble and give him something to think about when his GPA counts for REAL in college.

At least now there's Baseball to occupy me a little !!!:thumb: How bout them Yankees :shake: Gotta do something while we wait. And snow tomorrow AGAIN:unhappy: DS is scheduled for season opener. I don't think its gonna happen:frown:

Word on the street is offers for the third board should be going out in the next two weeks. Cut line was higher than last year (what a surprise). Best of luck to all.

Now is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I was wondering the same thing:confused:

As I understand it: cut score is the SAL type score placed on an applicants file - 1000 possible points, 350 awarded from the board that evaluated the file(Oct., Jan or Mar depending on when your completed your application). The other points were earned during the interview(200 possible) and based on the information provided in the application. SAL is scholar, athlete, leader if you haven't seen that one in awhile. None of us know our kids score, but it makes sense a higher score would be necessary to secure a scholarship this year with the lower number of them being awarded and the higher number of applications.

Hope that helps.

Is that the site where you request scholarship status? or are you talking about something else?

Nah thats my DODMERB page. My scholarship page has been the same since I accepted my scholarship. It says something like you have accepted a scholarship to NC State pending medical qualification from DODMERB.
