To Jcleppe and potential government shutdown.

Regarding the government shutdown and what would happen if it does... I hate to be the grim reaper, but if our boys and girls in DC cannot get over their large egos and cannot agree on a budget, we shut down. Unfortunately, Cadet Command staff is not on the list of priority departments and personal, therefore, no staff next week means nobody to report scholarship offers. I hate what I am writing here but it's reality...

I hate to agree with you as much as you hated to type it. There is no good outcome here. The children best not take anymore "recess" and get to work until this is settled.

I had the same maddening problem. I went to this site http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/announcements/dodrootcertificates.html and from there it gives instructions on how to download the proper permissions and certificate authorities. Once I downloaded the certificate authorities, it made navigating to the site much much quicker. I still get the warning page, but can click through it with no wait.

Hopefully, that helps you. :)

THANK YOU! It took a while to download all of them, but we got it done. DS qualified since 4 November 2010

Angry is past the word.

These MOCs are traditionally millionaires they don't have a clue how some cadets live on their stipend because the folks can't float money.

They are actually playing chicken with constituents lives.

800K Americans are Federal workers. That does not include retirees, or military. Just GS's.

Heck the FBI stated that this will impact them too. Most will not report for work on Monday.

Love the fact that MOC's have designated everyone of their staff members as essential, yet the military is considered non-essential while they are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yeah......it takes a while to do it, but it's worth it if you're going to be navigating that site often.

I'm glad it worked for you!

When are the kids supposed to complete these physicals? It seems like some have already done them even though they don't know if they have received a scholarship yet. My DD hasn't received or heard anything about completing one. I hope we haven't missed a step somewhere.

100% agree. This is insane. I don't care what your party is, this chicken will hurt so many it should be criminal for them to use this as a political game. I can only pray for all you that will be impacted.

Don't panic. Some applications were directed to DodMERB, some were not. We don't believe this indicates any huge deal. Also, so many apply to ROTC and Service academies that they had their physicals early for the SAs.

I know for me last year I didn't hear anything about DODMERB until after I recieved the scholarship. A packet came in the mail around a week or so after. I don't know why some kids get it before and others don't. Might have to do if they applied to SA or not, or it just may be random like the government is sometimes.

I wouldn't look too far into it though.

My son's good friend is financially dependent on his stipend so this is not good at all for him.

When I read an article yesterday how this would effect the Armed Forces fighting overseas, I was just floored. I just don't understand how anyone can look at themselves in the mirror when this is taking place.

From what I have gathered from this thread is that the results come in April 8th. Well that's tomorrow and I just wanted to know if this is somewhat correct so that way I can stop holding off accepting my admission to my second choice school. I don't know how much more waiting I can take...

Unfortunately, they moved the time to release results to early next week(last rumor). IF the shut down of the federal govn't takes place, we all may be waiting much longer since CC will not be able to work past midnight Friday. Pray that DC grows a soul and conscious and gets something together that works fast.

Now I have to trust in the government for the better of my future... I hate to say that I'm not too confident about that. Looks like one more week, then that's it for me.

Your not wrong to be skeptical. My DS is learning a lot more living thru this mess than AP Government could possibly teach. Keep your goals and dreams close, the road to college and commission are just a little rockier than before. Be good to yourself - the stress all of the applicants are handling is much more than the typical high school senior expects. If it applies, have faith.

You brought up a great point I had not even considered. It really doesn't matter if the scholarships are funded or not before the shutdown. The fact will be that if there is a shutdown there simply will not be anybody working to push the update button.

I've let my older son know to save his money in preparation for the shutdown and no stipend payment.

Now, while the wait for scholarship notification and the loss of a stipend of between $150.00 and $250.00 will be a real inconvenience, I can't even imagine the hardship that will fall on our active duty military personell.

We have military now involved in 2 1/2 wars, the majority enelisted. Many are young enlisted with families at home. For most young enlisted families, they live from paycheck to paycheck, the loss of even on payday can have a devastaiting effect. Now put all this in the mind of a soldier fighting in Afganistan or a sailor on the deck of an aircraft carrier off the coast of Libya. While these men and women try hard to keep their focus on their mission they will now have the burden of wondering how their families will get by with the loss of payment. These men and women can't afford the distraction, it will take their focus off their task at hand and can end up putting them in greater danger to themselves and those around them.

The MOC need to realize that this shutdown in a time of War, a War that many of them have seemed to forget is even going on these days, put lives at risk. I want to see just one of them stand up on the floor and tell the American Military that we expect you to pick up your weapon and fight, but we're sorry we can not pay you or your family while you risk your life for your country.

I sympathize with all those waiting for the scholarship results and the decisions everyone needs to make soon regarding schools. The integrity I have felt from all those that post here makes it clear that we all have the bigger picture in mind.

If there is indeed a shutdown and soldiers are not paid, I would only ask that if you know of a military family in need please find a way to help, our children could all be in the same position some day.

Let just hope MOC and the Administration find a way to pull their collective heads out of their....well you know. This debacle crosses all party lines.

Good luck everyone

It could possibly work in our favor too. If the results are still scheduled to be released on the 8th, and the government will officially shut down midnight of the 8th. I wouldn't be surprised to see CC try to push the scholarships through so they arn't affected. Could be way off but it's just a thought.

See the big picture

I know this a a tough time, but it's time to stop complaining about the Government shutdown. This shutdown will affect me as well as my one son currently fighting in Afghanistan and another son in school, so please don't tell me I don't have a dog in this hunt and that I dont' understand what you are going through. Without getting political, we are in a time of incredible budget crisis and the solution is not going to be easy. We have to start somewhere and if this gets all of us focussed on fixing this for ourselves and generations to come, then so be it. I haven't seen any of you mention that one of the chambers of Congress did pass a bill that would have given DoD their budget for the rest of the year (thereby exempting them from any shutdown) while the rest of the budget was debated. Unfortunately it won't become law as the Executive Branch said this morning that it would veto it. This is just the beginning of the changes we all are going to have to make in the upcoming years to get this financial mess (that all of us helped create by the way) turned around.

whsoccerjc21 April 8th hopes

It will not be April 8th. Would love to end the waiting myself, but earliest will be next week if the govt. stays up and running. best of luck to you.

Welcome to the thread, you picked an odd first post to introduce yourself, but all are welcome here while we wait to see results on the AROTC scholarship results. We are not a political blog and actually avoid pointed discussions because as you have read, we all come from a variety of beliefs and backgrounds. Many of us take conversation to other threads or to PM if we feel its appropriate.

You mention 2 sons and yourself being impacted by the potential shutdown, are you an Army family? Is you son in school on an AROTC or other branch scholarship or program? How long has your son been deployed?

Hope that this is resolved and thank you for your son's(and yours if applicable) service to our country.

Take care.
