:biggrin:Then prepare to get ill if you read this, but yes the military - with the Navy in particular is 'removing barriers' to produce more minority officers, to 'better represent' the people they lead. Link Link Link

Thanks for the link gojack, I had faith if it was there you'd find it. Won't read tonight (or soon probably, but will down the road) Thanks!

I posted earlier that I wholeheartedly agree that this should be on merit only and not race or ethnicity. A little background but not pertaining to ROTC. I am 1/2 German and 1/2 Mexican-American (born in Michigan with dad born in Texas and grandparents born in Mexico). I graduated high school with honors and was accepted to MSU. I had a 3.7 GPA and ACT of 25. I had a conditional acceptance and had to be a part of the minority advisory services and pay for and attend a time management class for the first year. That has bugged me for the past 25 years.

Moving forward, my DS has an ACT of 26, GPA of 3.5, 8 varsity letters, much community service, volunteering to include in leadership positions throughout Jr. High and High School. He has a killer resume at the young age of 17. Now, he is of course of my heritage and his father is black. My sweet boy is a melting pot. It kills me that if he is awarded a scholarship he will be told it is not because of his merit but because of his race=black and ethnicity=hispanic. It hurts that he will endure the same perception that I had to just starting out.

He would be an excellent leader representing minorities. But not because of his heritage but because of all the hard work he has put forth.

A kid at my sons school was awarded a AF Scholarship and he is very average academically. His weighted GPA is only 4.0, and he isn't even in the top 50% of his graduating class. He has been in JROTC for four years and isn't in a leadership position, which is a good indication of his ability (or lack thereof) in my opinion. His GPA and SAT scores are WELL below normal acceptance for the college he is going to as well.

Positive discrimination in full force.

My son also applied to AF. He was denied scholarship. I'm glad that he was not shuttled in b/c of his race but rather b/c there were better qualified applicants and he didn't make the cut. This is the way is should be to get rid of negative perceptions. At my age I am no longer certain this will change in my lifetime. I'm starting to wonder if it ever will. :frown:

I agree.

When an inner city kid gets a scholarship but they are in the top 10% of their class I can somewhat accept it, even if their SAT/GPA isn't great.

However when a kid going to one of the best high schools in Florida gets preferential treatment because of their color it is totally unacceptable IMO. The kid is in the bottom 30% of his graduating class and has failed to impress JROTC instructors over four years.

Thank you FloridaDad. I am furious that kid gets a pass. It gives a black eye to the Armed Forces and a black eye to every child out there that is a minority. It absolutely should never happen. If there aren't enough "qualified" minorities to represent then talk to the parents. It's under their tutelage that they will be well prepared to become productive, happy, intelligent members of society. Work your butt off or get off the pot and stop whining because you didn't get your fair share of the pie. It's all about work ethic and integrity.

THANK YOU. Yeah, you're singing the choir here, but I've heard a lot of minority parents in our school district voice the same frustration -- they want their kids judged on MERIT not RACE.

WELL.... seems my enthusiastic local ROO spoke out of turn in the email to me.

Do NOT expect *approved* contact from your ROO until next week. For now, everyone will, I suppose, need to guess about which school their Scholarship Award from the Status page applies to, and whether it is for 3 years or 4 years. ROO's are supposed to wait to contact their awardees until the physical letter is mailed, which I assume will be Friday, or next Monday or Tuesday.

Also, extremely good news -- *some* multiple school offers are coming out of this Board. Cannot say where I learned that, but it wasn't from my friendly ROO who spoke out of turn!

Here is what my DD's Status Page at https://schlr4yr.usarmyrotc.com/scholarshipstatus/RetrieveStatus.asp now reflects:

"You have been offered an Army ROTC Scholarship. We must receive your acceptance/declination by the date in your letter or the offer will be withdrawn. Your name will be sent to DODMERB the day your winner letter is printed. There will be about 72 workweek hours prior to being able to see your name in the DODMERB system.

You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite

Thank you for using the Army ROTC Scholarship Application Status System. If You have any questions regarding your selection status, please use the "Contact Us" button provided in the menu bar located on the left of this page to submit your questions."

Note that it does not identify 3 yr. vs. 4 yr., nor the school to which it applies.

SO SAY WE ALL!!!!!

well unfortunately that's NOT a true statement. But I do pray to God that one day in this civilization it becomes a reality. The cream of the crop only gets the rewards for all their hard work. All others need not apply or be prepared to exclude yourself from wonderful opportunities. PERIOD.

Show me da lettter!!

Right now I would kill for status change. Im done for the day.. I have put down 4 boxes of Girl Scout Thin Mints as I watched all of the news unfold. One more box should get me through the night.. I only have one case left, so hopefully some good news will come soon...

Yo! Can we keep all the racial issues out of this thread?? Please??

Just did a final check of my DD status and has not changed. I SWEAR I am not going to check it again tonight! Glad I have people to commisserate with. My poor husband is off doing his own military drill now and is probably getting tired of me calling him! Luckily for him, he just took off on his flight and will be unreachable til I go to bed. So, time for that glass of wine (or two) and will not check the status site again tonight. In the words of Scarlett O'Hara (I am an Atlanta girl) "tomorrow is another day"...I will of course be keeping an eye on the message board:wink:

haha thats a lot of cookies

Regarding minorities and ROTC, you guys have to realize that the acceptance of minorities who are less qualified is probably quite rare/not as common as you guys are making it out to be. For every 1 less-qualified minority who was awarded a scholarship, there were probably 10 who got their scholarships the same way everyone else got theirs.

edit: I just saw the post about keeping the bickering about race out of the thread. I agree, I was just addressing what I saw earlier as almost discrediting of minorities.

just calculated and that is 4480 calories, 5600 if you have another box.

Sorry, haha, had to do it.

Wish the best for everyone who hasn't yet has their status updated!!!

Thin Mints are my favorite! I'll bring a gallon of milk and help you polish off that case! I to am calling it a night. Going to power off the laptop and see what happens tomorrow!
