March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board
OBTW my only problem I would have with USC is their mascots name. I have a thing with mascots, and IMPO both my kids have stupid ones. One has a turtle, I mean seriously who is afraid of a turtle? The other has a castrated bird. The only people afraid of the bird is the darn turtle! I have 1 last child I am pinning hopes on that they will go to a school where the mascot makes you believe in it as powerful. Afterall, I am pretty sure there is nothing left that is less threatening than a turtle or a bird. Yes, we love the schools, just think it is funny that these ACC teams have weak mascots.
I know what you mean about mascots. But Clemson is ACC and their mascot is a Tiger - that's pretty threatening (too bad their football team wasn't so threatening last year:frown:) One other thing - and you probably didn't mean to imply this - USC Gamecocks are in the SEC not the ACC. They are very proud of that fact!! But I agree it is a difficult mascot - you should see some of the bumper stickers around town that use the shortened version. They push the limits of acceptable!

freedom, it is not done automatically, it is school by school.

For ex: the ROTC at our DS's school does not "talk" with admissions. Admissions could not care less, and it will not get your kid in.

You can contact the ROTC office and see if they "talk", but usually they are very tight lipped re: this issue.

It is MPO from my experience that they "talk" if they really want that the candidate, otherwise they stay out of the admissions process.

People don't realize that admissions are like the ROTC, they have boards. It is not as if they throw in the stats and VOILA you are in or out. Those essays are there for a reason, and somebody is going to read it, and give a score. If you expand that premise, you than can understand why they need a board because if they have even 50% selection rate, there are going to be people with the same score at the bottom of the pile, and thus, they need to talk it out on who is "in" and who is "out". The board is a cross section of the school, and that is when you can tell if they "talk".

Even if they do talk, if the candidate is not a match for the school, it isn't going to help, because in the end tied to that scholarship is a gpa min. Hence, ROTC won't waste the energy believing academically the candidate will not make it to graduation with the extra burden of ROTC.

I didn't realize they were SEC, I assumed, and we know what the word assume means, that since they play our 2 kids schools in FB and BB, they were ACC.

1000 lashes with a wet spaghetti noodle for me.

I agree. Our ROO told us if DS was awarded scholarship and not accepted to the school he "knew" someone in admissions. It sounds like it is school by school.

If you get an offer to a school that you were not admitted to, you need to contact the ROO at that school as well as the ROO at your next school of choice. They can work together. Im not sure how the two schools interact with CC, but transfers of scholarships is something that can be accomplished. I believe that if the two schools are in the same brigrade, it makes it easier.

We have a split family too! My oldest DS graduated from USC - he loves his Gamecocks! My middle DS is a senior at Clemson and will graduate next month! Now the youngest is going to Clemson on an AROTC scholarship. I can already see him doing the push-ups on the field during football games with his ROTC buddies!

Well then you know what we will be going through each Thanksgiving! My DD was supposed to graduate next month, but graduated a little early in December. Most disappointing to her is that she will miss Senior Walk - but she is going down in a couple of weeks, after classes end and before exams start - to hit Triple T's, Winging It, etc. one last time with her buds before they all leave...and she did enjoy Fall Crawl, so she didn't miss out completely

DS' status just changed - he's been awarded a scholarship...wonder where it's to??? BTW, last name begins with C.

Congrats!! I was just about to ask if anyone has seen any movement yet today. Last name for us is Wa so at least when they get to W it won't be long after that. I still have a feeling it could be a few more days though. :bang:
