March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

Thanks for the Stats! Hope others will add theirs. It could be useful for future crops of prospective scholarship cadets to know what is needed. :thumb:

Glad to see your DS is working on his Pilot's License, mine is flying today (he is really close to getting his license).

Off topic a little, but with two pilot's mom's around...my nephew is currently completing his final training for his first commercial pilot job. He graduated from Kent State in December and now has his first job. Wasn't a military minded individual and has MASS loans, but with a job now hopefully all will go well for him. He also got his licence in high school, guess once they get bit by the flying thing its for good!

My son has already made his school choice (we haven't sent the deposit yet). We are lucky because he received a nice scholarship along with other financial aid which makes it (while tight) doable. He plans on doing ROTC, scholarship or not and is looking forward to it! However the scholarship, even a 3 year would be a big help. Our daughter is a sophomore at UMD, so we are already paying one tuition/ R&B payment. We have discussed with the ROO at the school trying to get something for next year. Soooo we just have to wait and see.

We have the exact same story (only we have sent the deposit as we did not want to get caught if the ROTC went south). DS is looking at SMP and possibly ROTC anyway but with all of the discouragement and rejection from USNA, USMA (3Q'd waitlisted and TWE), NROTC, and time ticking down on ROTC DS is starting second guess if this is suppossed to be in the cards for him or if life has something else in store for him. Who knows really as life is one big rollercoaster and we are all just here for the ride:wink:

Does he have an NROTC offer?

Nope...TWE recipient, but that was his first choice. As posted previously, he has no idea what a military life would be like in any branch, so he is open minded as far as which one to join. The only thing he knows for sure is school choice (OOS expensive SMC). We are doing the Parent Plus route for now with some help of a few academic scholarships that make it possible.

Good to hear the back up plans are all in place. Yes, OSUDad, my DS has had those moments too where he's questioned IF military is for him since they haven't offered a scholarship. His stats are great, but lopsided with no varsity letter/s, so I have a feeling that is the fatal flaw. Keeping them positive in the face of rejection is so difficult. I hope your DS and mine, can stay open to the possiblities, but also hold the passion for serving their country.
The waiting will continue, but I am glad to have passed it with all of you.

Don't know that is the fatal flaw, my DS has strong stats and is a 3 year varsity football letter holder and 2 year football captain. So who really knows what it is they are looking for or at during these boards:confused:

Wow great stats! I have no idea what CC is looking for. I think that with 10,000applications (read that somewhere) they can pick the cream of the cream.
My son has had his application in since September and has been through all three boards. He goes to a catholic high school in DC, St. Johns, 3.6 gpa, with average SATs, 4 year letterman in swimming & 2 year team captain; Plays trumpet in 6 different bands, 1st chair; Tri-M music honor society and senior Peer Minister for the school; also is an Eagle Scout, plays CYO basketball and works as a lifeguard in the summer and gives swim lessons.
His ROTC scores were: PU: 60, SU: 51 & mile run: 6:38. He received letter from DodMerb in January for the medical and has been ROTC qualified since 2/14.

I guess the waiting will be over soon! I wonder if anyone will get a letter today?

Must pull myself away and clean my house...whoo hoo. I will be checking back often for results. Here is hoping the offers roll in to ALL.

What does DS want to major in... My son wants to double major in Criminal Justice & Psychology with the hopes of working in the FBI after serving in the Army. He might also want to be career military, he's just not sure at this point. I am wondering if with all the push for science, math & engineering, the major he has picked isn't what the army is looking for.:frown:

GOT IT

You have been offered an Army ROTC Scholarship. We must receive your acceptance/declination by the date in your letter or the offer will be withdrawn. Your name will be sent to DODMERB the day your winner letter is printed. There will be about 72 workweek hours prior to being able to see your name in the DODMERB system.

You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite

From what I have heard, your major does not matter AT ALL in AROTC. I know it does for AFROTC and NROTC.

Found this on a Military.com forum from 2 years ago, not sure if it has changed "in Army ROTC major does not matter at all. One of the MSIV's that just graduated was a sociology major and she went aviation. On the other hand GPA does mean a **** load, so if you have a terrible GPA in engineering and a 4.0 in underwater basket weaving then you will be more likely to get Aviation with the 4.0 in basket weaving."

Let me know if anyone has heard otherwise

DS maxed all other score areas, so the only goose egg is letters. 32 ACT, 3.89 unw gpa, eagle, student senate pres, other scout stuff, passed APFT and had amazing interview(kid learned to talk from momma:biggrin:) Its all just guessing at this point, the stats here are all top notch - some will and some won't get the scholarship. I wouldn't have had him change a thing about his highschool career.

Hopefully they start posting something soon. Can't wait to see how many of you get great news. If it comes for us, that's just the icing.
