March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

My DD was one of the ones that received the medical packet but has not been awarded a scholarship as of yet. Unfortunately, got us really excited. Hopefully if she doesn't get an offer now it will mean she is close to the top for any leftovers. Her physicals are set up for this Wed/Fri. and we are sticking with it just in case. We have heard there has only been one female get an offer at Bama so far. She is going either way but the OOS tuition will kill us without some help so keeping fingers crossed!

Yes, the OOS tuition at most schools is a little shocking. Hopefully you will end up with a scholarship, the last group of Dodmerb packets seemed the most likely to get offered. The board had technically met and knew who all was in the running.

There have been many applicants sent thru DodMERB before the offer this year. One group received their paperwork to do the exams last week, many of them have received offers, not sure if all or not. My DS has been qualified by DODMERB since Dec., so they did things a little differently this year than in the past.

We are of the group that received paperwork last week. We are still waiting. Our last name starts with Wa. There were a lot of people though on Thursday and Friday that had gotten the packet on Monday and were awarded. We are keeping our fingers crossed!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and for some reason I have tried to post several times and have had difficulty, it's all me....hitting the wrong keys etc....so here I go, third times a charm. I'm all thumb as I wait to hear something. ;-)

Congratulations to all those receiving scholarships. I'm so happy for you and thank you for wanting to serve our country.

We are an active duty Army family. DH is a LTC. Our DS has always wanted to serve and I'm waiting to hear something (Last name TU). DS got tired of waiting and went SMP. He swore in a week ago. I'm so proud of him, making such an adult decision and following in Dad's footsteps. DH also went SMP many decades ago. ;-) DS will go to basic this summer and then on to AIT. He will follow on to University and ROTC. He is very happy with all the benefits and also being ahead of the cadets once he gets there. If he were awarded a scholarship today or tomorrow he says he would not take it. He likes this path. I'm still being hopeful....I worry about him and want him to get the scholarship. DH thinks the SMP will be great for DS.

That's a little about our story. Thanks for all your postings....they have been a comfort to me.

Sitting here twiddling my thumbs...better go be productive.

Welcome! Would you mind telling us what State you are from and what the SMP benefits for your son are? They vary state by state. Oh yes. I am asking because there are several of us that are curious and we may go the SMP route too. Thank you!

With stats like that, you be on top of the OML for On Campus Scholarships at many programs. You need to contact the schools you are interested in and find out whether or not they anticipate having $ for On Campus Scholarships next Fall.

Congrats to everyone who has had good news this morning. I hope there are a lot more offers to come.

I pick up DS from the ship this morning and give him the good news. The look on his face was pricless. I'm so glad I waited and told him in person. Now he has a big decision to make. We leave tomorrow afternoon to revisit the schools.

Welcome! Exciting that your DS has jumped in with both feet! It is something to be proud of. Ditto to Niko's mom's post - would love to hear where you are located and what college(s) DS will be heading to after AIT.

So glad you got that moment with him!!! Have an amazing and informative trip visiting the schools involved.

Thank you for posting your son's situation with SMP, and welcome to posting. My DS will probably be going SMP too. This isn't looking very positive to me. But the commission is the goal - how he gets there will just be the opening chapter of his story. Hang out with us, it seems very slow today, only 2 offers I've seen, so we may have to come back tomorrow too

Hi, my son has been informed (via CC’s website) that the scholarship he has been awarded was to his third choice college, only. All his schools are public and instate.

Our last name starts with B

As they are busy inputting school choices, maybe it took away some people from inputting any new offers. Hence the delay....

Ours...4 schools 3 out of state, the other a state school, but his 4th choice and he ultimately did not apply....Looks like he will get to go to his top choice school!

What's your best guess

With all of the changes this year what would you base the availability of the campus based scholarships on? DS knows he is high on the OML for a campus based scholarship but what is he up against in the crazy budget year?

Would also be interested in Marist or Clarkson's input on the question.

Start looking at transfer threads, clarkson also has a blog, sure its google-able, I'm not good at linking. Will the 3rd choice work if nothing else can change?

I know. That is what is just killing me. Why would my DS receive that packet last Monday if he is not being awarded? But then again several days ago we all had that conversation. Basically I think it came down to...since this is the last board they are getting all the top kids medically certified so that if some awards are turned down or others are not medically qualified they can then know for certain who to offer the remaining slots to.

My DS received his packet after the January board...got us really excited. Since he didn't get anything from the Jan. board we hoped that ment we would in March. However still nothing. I do hope if scholarships are turned down CC will then offer them to another student. The whole process is killing me too.

100% agree, in addition (if you NEED the scholarship, and have average credentials) write a really good essay, interview with your first choice school, do an overnight-er and AM PT there, you want a relationship with your future unit. I think your first choice school should be one where you are in the top 50% or even better top 25% of applicants. (even if your 2nd choice school is actually your 1st)

I think what helped us was that we visited the school and unit when we were looking at schools. We scheduled an appointment and they spent a great deal of time speaking to my son and to myself. We then went back to that school to do his interview. I feel that since my son showed considerable interest in THAT school it really helped.
