March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

There is a thread or two running (yeah, someone other than us uses the forum:biggrin:) on SMP. Read up, its not the worst thing that could happen to our kiddos

SMP was the trail we were running down if ROTC didn't come through. It is my understanding that the ROTC command can give an SMP cadet an ROTC scholarship if things work out. I don't know the truth to that or what would have to happen but it is something I heard.

As they are busy inputting school choices, maybe it took away some people from inputting any new offers. Hence the delay....

let it be the answer, otherwise, the other option is they are done with award results leaves a lot of us in a bad way. I'm not afraid to get DS thru college without the scholarship. Right now I'm just really sad thinking of the look on his face if one is not offered. We will be fine, but I just dread that moment when I have to tell him it is over. Parenting has its good and not so good moments.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and for some reason I have tried to post several times and have had difficulty, it's all me....hitting the wrong keys etc....so here I go, third times a charm. I'm all thumb as I wait to hear something. ;-)

Congratulations to all those receiving scholarships. I'm so happy for you and thank you for wanting to serve our country.

We are an active duty Army family. DH is a LTC. Our DS has always wanted to serve and I'm waiting to hear something (Last name TU). DS got tired of waiting and went SMP. He swore in a week ago. I'm so proud of him, making such an adult decision and following in Dad's footsteps. DH also went SMP many decades ago. ;-) DS will go to basic this summer and then on to AIT. He will follow on to University and ROTC. He is very happy with all the benefits and also being ahead of the cadets once he gets there. If he were awarded a scholarship today or tomorrow he says he would not take it. He likes this path. I'm still being hopeful....I worry about him and want him to get the scholarship. DH thinks the SMP will be great for DS.

That's a little about our story. Thanks for all your postings....they have been a comfort to me.

Sitting here twiddling my thumbs...better go be productive.

I don't think he HAS to go until goes to in-process, right? He could accept the ROTC and go that route. Unless I am mistaken.

Would also be interested in Marist or Clarkson's input on the question.

I anticipate that the low cost schools, ie public and inexpensive private schools, will have plenty of money for On Campus Scholarships. I also anticipate that the more expensive private schools, ie $30K +, will have almost no money available for On Campus Scholarships.

No hard evidence to base this on. This is a gut feeling that is partly supported by the recent email traffic on private vs. public.

Bottom line: You need a solid back up plan if you are hoping for an On Campus Scholarship from an expensive private school.

Thank you for the response. It is encouraging in our circumstance, but probably not for everyone.

I understand your fear, but if they want to serve, they will serve. The scholarship is more about the folks not paying and that financial burden is what concerns them.

They know they can still obtain their goal of being commissioned.

Our kids are much more resilient than we ever give them credit for in this situation.

We don't want to see our children ever feel pain and it touches us deeper than it does them. That's just being a parent.

Come a few days they have moved on, while you still watch to see if they have moved on.

You raised a great kid, and 10 will get you 20, they will accept the results positive or negative on a more even keel than you do. They do that because you raised them that way.

Best thoughts, hopes, and wishes

Pima.

I know exactly how you feel...My son has worked very hard to get to this point and so I want it to work out for him. We just have to keep thinking positive!

My heart goes out to all of you.

AFROTC Mom, and DS never applied AROTC, but I have to ask am I correct, someone with lower stats can get in because the school is lower tier compared to the higher stats student?

In other words the kid who applies to Texas A & M as a safety with a 32 ACT and every AP, plus tons of ECs will not get a scholarship, but the candidate with a 27 and a weaker resume, but applies to a less prestigious school will?

If so, why do you believe it is last initial and not the last 4 SS or actually the school?

AFROTC as you know take a nationalistic approach, schools don't matter at all in the process.

You all know I have been here for yrs. I am curious how everyone is leaping to the last initial is how the results are being released.

Pima,

There has been a lot of discussion on school selections this year. I believe that my son may have even benefited from that possibility. Here is my best guess on the subject.

First I should give my son's stats for a comparison.

3.55 u/w GPA
24 ACT
NHS
Eagle Scout
3 years Varsity Track- Captain 1 year
3 years Varsity Crosscountry- Captain 1 year
Debate team
2 years Senator Youth and Government
1 year Juror- District Youth Court
1 year Head Juror- District Youth Court
1 year Judge- District Youth Court
1 year Sports Editor School Annual
1 year Editor in Cheif School Annual
2 years Senior Leader Youth Group
3 Mission Trips to build houses as a Youth Leader
High School Band
Marching Band Section Leader
Audition Band- Wind Ensemble
2 years Jazz Band
Part Time Job
247 AFPT
Advanced Scuba Diving Cert.

When he listed his schools he tried to keep in mind the average acceptance stats at each school. He received scholarships to the following:

University of Idaho
University of Montana
Washington State University
Oregon State University
University of West Florida.

OSU was probably the most competetive of the 5 schools, they have a very strong ROTC and a very high number of applicants each year.

He decided on the University of Idaho. for us this was an Out of State School.

I have an older son that is a MS3 at the University of Idaho. My younger son did his interview there and his AFPT test with them.

We met with the ROO just before the first board, he outlined the stats of those who had lested U of I as a school choice and they had marked as Yes. DS's stats were close to the top in GPA and shy of a couple points on ACT of the top. The one thing the PMS told him during his interview was that his Leadership stats were very good and would help make up for the ACT.

I think you are correct in your assumption regarding school selections. I truely believe if DS would have put only schools like Texas A&M ond others similar he would not have received the scholarship, that is just a guess. That of course does not account for the scholarship to Oregon State, where they had at least triple the applicants.

My son was told by the PMS he interviewed with as well as the others that they did not expect him to be selected the first round, they thought he would be a better candidate for the second or third round. They as well as uss were a little suprised that he received the scholarship offer on the first round.

I will add one thing which I have no idea at all whether it made a difference. As I said, my older son is currently a MS3, last year when my younger son interviewed, older son was a MS2, top of the OML and had just received the Superior Cadet Award. I have no idea if the fact that younger DS had a brother in the program made any difference, his PMS didn't know either, althoug he did mention it in his Interview sheet.

I am not sure how much the interview and comments from the PMS influence the decision, the ROO at the school told my son when we met him before the board that he had not seen an Interview with such high comments before and he should feel good about that, Not bragging at all here, we were just trying to figure out why he received a 1st round selection when most thought that would not happen.

I know I have seen others post here with similar stats that listed smaller in state universities that have not yet received an offer. We are still mystified at the selection process. Sometimes I think they just spin a wheel or throw a dart.

My only advise for future applicants would be;

Apply early and be ready for the first board
Interview at your first choice school
List schools that you are in the upper percentage of accepted students
Have a god resume of Leadership positions
Have at least one In State school on your list

While we are proud of our son and he is extremely grateful for the opportunity, we do think it is a shame that some applicants with stellar stats have not received scholarships because they had listed highly competetive schools. U of I had around 85 applicants list their school, OSU had over 280, and I can only imagine how many list schools like Texas A&M and Va Tech.

The Air Force seems to be the one application process that is fair when it comes to awarding scholarships based on applicant stats.

I wish everyone here who is still waiting for results the best of luck, you all have amazing kids that will go far in reaching their goals. The path may end up being different then planned but the result will be the same.

Good Luck everyone.

Welcome! Would you mind telling us what State you are from and what the SMP benefits for your son are? They vary state by state. Oh yes. I am asking because there are several of us that are curious and we may go the SMP route too. Thank you!

We are in Kansas, Ft. Leavenworth. DS school choice for scholarship is not the one he is now going to. After he submitted his application he did some more research after finding out that he could not go to DLI (Defense Language Institute)....Let me explain....after working on plan B....he started researching how he could become a linguist. His choice school offered Chinese as a minor and he wants to Major in Mandarin.

Back to his choosing Reserve... One can not swear in without a job. So his recruiter started working on a job for him. Calling all over the place. The commander that would make a decision for a job possibility that would allow him to go to DLI decided he was too young to risk. The job was located in Hawaii. So DS researched U of Hawaii. It has a great Mandarin Chinese program. He now has a job as a Signal "guy" (Army communications) at a unit in Hawaii close to U of Hawaii. I know....so far away. He plead his case and we decide to let him go for it. He is very mature and capable. So why not? Right? (I'm having to tell myself this everyday as I sit here waiting for a scholarship offer....oldest kid of four and having a hard time letting go). As for his benefits....I have a message to DS asking him that. I will post once he lets me know. I do know he becomes in state tuition and much is paid for. This journey has been emotional for me. Sitting with a recruiter as my husband is TDY....signing consent forms etc.... i don't want to give the wrong info. I hope this helps. AND: I'm so very proud of DS!!!!

Thank you Pima. Your comments are so comforting. He will be okay either way. This is the boy that when I told him 2 weeks ago his dad lost his job so some things around here would be changing, immediately responded: I'm not going to college, I'll direct enlist Mom and then I can send home my money. He has an amazing HEART - stats are for earning scholarship, his heart has been true and strong since he was a little boy. I looked him in the eye when I pinned his Eagle medal on him -- I'll look him in the eye if and when this is over too. You've got those kind of kids too - most of us here do - it will be a painful moment, but it will pass. I'll still cry when those bars go on him in a few years.

Thank you for posting your son's situation with SMP, and welcome to posting. My DS will probably be going SMP too. This isn't looking very positive to me. But the commission is the goal - how he gets there will just be the opening chapter of his story. Hang out with us, it seems very slow today, only 2 offers I've seen, so we may have to come back tomorrow too

Thank you Ohio....yes, the goal is to commission. My husband did. He was also SMP. He has had a great career. We love the military life. We do! 20 years and we are still at it. (29 years for DH) It's been hard explaing this to family. Things have changed in the world of ROTC. Even since my husband was a Professor of Military Science from 2007-2009. But we do have top notch Officers and that is absolutely wonderful! As a country, we should be proud! proud of these amazing new ROTC cadets with a huge future ahead of them!

Everyone's kiddos are amazing. Our country is blessed to have such awesome young people willing to serve and protect. They aren't all trying to become financial wizards and make a million - they want to serve the greatest nation on earth, risking all and sacraficing much to do it.

Just wish CC would get on with the posting...I'm getting a little tired of waiting:smile:

You guys sound like you really did some digging. Congratulations to you and your DS. I wish him nothing but the best of success. I've no doubt any of our kids will also be successful. One incredible indicator is all the wonderful parents on this board spending so much time with each other trying to be informed. We all no doubt have spent this much effort in parenting our children. We are all proud!!

You are right. Recruiting has changed. Even once a new recruit is sworn in, he/she can change their minds. And if a scholarship is presented, that can be accepted and the recruit would not have to serve (as active duty, reserve, NG etc...). Once DS gets to University and if he is offered a 3 year scholarship after the first year....he can take it!

Oh my goodness, yes, Niko....when I found this group I was in shock...more parents like me. Wanting the best for their kiddos. I showed my husband and he smiled. I read the stats on these kids and I'm in awe of what great kids there are and wanting to go ROTC! I'm in complete agreement....we should all be so proud.

We have been putting so much energy into this. Like a full time job. :) It does make sense for our DS. I have been trying my best explaining DS's choices to friends and family. I have had some less than positive responses.

Our family and friends think we're crazy. No military here. DS has an academic merit full ride to his 2nd choice school -- AROTC is good there, but #1 he likes better and ROTC tends to do better in comparison. He's willing to go SMP or whatever it takes to make this school work for him.

Yes, we found this group in December - it is so great to have like minded(even if we are nut jobs:biggrin:) parents to talk with - like finally finding the perfect pre-school or something when they were little tykes.

Some have said, "Why do that (ROTC)? Who does ROTC from your school? Why turn down a full tuition scholarship for an unknown quantity from school choice 2." Haven't gone down the SMP route but may get there.
