NASS 2010 Acceptance Thread

For women, from the USAFA website, maximum and mean scores (I just had to type them since I couldn't get them to copy/paste without losing formatting):

Basketball 66/41 ft.
Pullups 7/3
Shuttle 8.6/9.7 sec
Situps 95/79
Pushups 50/40
Mile 6:00/7:44

I know the academies vary some, but the max scores seemed about the same for all the academies. I couldn't find the averages listed looking quickly for USNA, but this should give you an idea of what you're striving for.

Never mind, I just checked my ticket again! I leave LAX at 10:55 and arrive in Michigan at 6:13, where I'll have a two hour layover until I get to BWI at 9:45! Fun!

I'm just disappointed that I don't get any food on the airplane  I always look forward to airplane food/snacks

Where's your layover in, Drew?

Do we let them know our travel plans?

I lost my letter that told me basically everything about the seminar, and I'm in session 1 ! :(
Does anyone know if we have to email them our flight arrival times?

My packing list!

-pillow
-blanket
-twin size bedspread
-camera + charger
-phone + charger
-three sets of clothes (khaki shorts, jean capris, a skirt, and three tank tops)
-pullover hoodie and a zip up hoodie
-five pairs of athletic shorts
-fourteen pairs of socks
-two small towels and a big towel
-fourteen pairs of underwear (not including the disposable underwear my mom got :yllol: but I have about six twelve pairs of those)
-two one piece swimsuits
-wallet w/ confirmation&acceptance letters, school ID card, and money
-two pairs of running shoes

For toiletries, I am not sure what airlines allow you to bring on the plane (liquids and stuff). So I am going to list stuff I'm planning to bring along. If anyone could give some advice on what to leave home, I would really appreciate that. Thanks!

-a can of spray sunblock
-20 oz jar of lotion
-face moisturizer
-6 oz bottle of face wash
-face wipes
-cotton pads, q-tips
-6 oz bottle of toner
-travel toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss
-shampoo, conditioner, body wash. I'll probably bring three travel sized bottles of each.

I'm thinking, I could bring face wipes only and leave the face wash and toner at home. However, I imagine I'd want to wash off the dirt and sweat each day with face wash.

Other stuff:
-big garbage bag for dirty clothes
-travel packets of laundry soap
-notebook+pen
-sunglasses
-duffel bag, for the stuff they'll be issuing us

I never read anything that said we had to. On the NASS Instructions PDF, it said to call your admissions counselor if you would be arriving after 4:30 PM.

Which letter did you lose?

Tina-Your packing list sounds quite thorough! I will probably use it to help me pack :)
As for airline restrictions, I know that all of your liquids have to be in bottles 3.4 oz or less, and all bottles must fit together in a single one quart ziploc bag. I doubt that we will have laundry access, so you could leave the laundry soap at home if you want.

PS-what time is your flight arriving? Id love to meet up with the people I've gotten to know from this site :)

You won't have laundry access as in a washer/dryer but my son said that last year they washed their PT shirts out each day when they got back to the room. I'm sure he just used bar soap or whatever they had but this is a kid who would never think of something like that on his own, so I'm guessing they had to. So it may not be a bad idea!

Tina, agree with gonavy11 above that anything over 3 ounces (I always play it safe and go with 3 because I've seen people get a hard time on the 3.4 vs. 3 issue), including the lotion, will need to be in your checked luggage. I don't think you'll need to bring the hoodie because 1. It'll be way too hot to wear it and 2. You'll be issued one anyway. My son didn't bring one and came home with his issue one still crisply folded up. The sweat pants he was issued were trashed from Sea Trials though. You'll also be issued athletic shorts which he said were all he wore (or was allowed to) the whole week other than khaki shorts to class/dinner and a pair to sleep in. And I think the blanket and bedspread will be overkill. The dorms are warm. My son brought one of those thing polartec sleeping bags and never used it. Son 2 will just bring a sheet set and a really lightweight blanket (think the kinds you used to get on an airplane). Although he can sleep in his boxers in the camper when it's 40 degrees so maybe he's not a good comparison!

One more bit of advice that I know is common sense, but since it evidently wasn't to my son last summer, thought I'd share. If you take a picture inside - USE THE FLASH! How you can be 17 years old and not have figured this out I have no idea. He said the flash "annoyed" people so he didn't use it. Well, guess what? We have 3 weeks worth of pictures from 3 summer seminars in which every picture inside is dark and nearly impossible to make out. Just thought I'd throw that PSA out there for anyone else who was equally clueless!

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what to do if we're coming from AFA summer seminar straight to NASS. Will my son have a ton of dirty socks and underwear etc from AFA??? After reading the list of things to bring I just now realized my dilema.

Any suggestions??

Texas - personally I'd probably buy him some cheap ones at Walmart and just have him toss them as he goes. I just got my son some no-name 4 packs for $6 for the boxers and you can always get a cheap 10 pack or so of socks anywhere. Might be easier than him (and you) dealing with the smell for a week and they may never (especially the socks) be totally clean. Better than the other way around though - I really don't think my older son's stuff from AF was bad but I know the stuff from Navy (Sea Trials Day) was really bad - we ran it through the wash twice and still tossed some of it. If you don't want to go the "disposable" route, I'd at least send some large ziplocs for him to seal anything really grungy off when he throws it in with his clean clothes for the next seminar!

The packing list on the USNA website says to pack 4 pairs of athletic shorts.

Evidently they no longer issue those?

putting it out there...
the TSA website says size limit is 3.4 oz volume but i would suggest putting all toiletries in your checked bags except for a small amount of necessary stuff like soap toothpaste just incase, you never know when your bags can be lost. I've heard that we meet down in baggage claim at BWI and look for the Midshipmen. :welcome1:
Also i heard from a friend who went last year that your company leader or what ever the group commander is called may wash your cloths for you, but don't count on it. BRING TRASHBAGS FOR SEA TRIAL DAY CLOTHS. THEY WILL BE FILTHY!!!! And actually bring laundry soap my not be all bad, you can always wash stuff in the sink

PS gonavy11 my flight should get in about 10:45 local time from houston

and if anyone knows about haircut regulations please let me know
