November NROTC board results known?

DS just got dinged for NROTC as well (status changed to "we're sorry . . ."). I'm glad this is over.

I'm sorry for the bad news, but can fully appreciate the "glad this is over." It has certainly been maddening! Still no change here, so the wait continues... :frown:

Thank you, NROTCAlumDad. "No change" is likely good news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumb: Good luck!

Ouch! All in one week, Rejection letters from Air Force Academy (no nom anyway), West Point (after being wait listed), Naval Academy and now NROTC. That would sting way more if it weren't for the AROTC scholarship. Ah well, it's off to college for the DS. He's cool with it. Truthfully, probably best. I think he was leaning towards the college experience anyway. Now no tough decisions to make. In the end, he got his 1st choice...that is if the transfer goes through. No biggie, he is psyched either way! Ahhhh big relief. I wish you all the best. I think my work here is done.

Has your son decided what path he will follow, he has some great opportunities.

Good luck to him in whatever he selects.

It's been a long year for all of our kids. For those who received the good news, work hard and earn the opportunity you have been given. For those who weren't as lucky remember, the scholarship was just about the money not the end result. Work hard and you will be putting those bars on in four years, with or without any scholarship.

Thanks, everyone for the encouraging words - as painful as it is, Navy dreams don't die if DS works hard to keep them alive - but for dad, I'm SO glad I wont be checking the NROTC site ever again!

Thank you very much, Jcleppe. DS hasn't decided yet which path he will follow. All signs seem to be pointed in the direction of USMA, but he has to go through this decisionmaking process by himself. Ultimately, it is him who has to take this path. Unlike USMA, USMMA may not be the right personal fit (unlike USNA or NROTC, USMMA seems to force students to cram in a 4-yr education into 3 years), but DS is still seriously thinking about it. We will be visiting non-SA schools next week for AROTC, and I will know more in a couple of weeks. On the AROTC front, we also have to evaluate the whole "host school v. non-host school" issue. Ugh! Thank goodness we have until May 1 to decide.

As for AROTC v. AFROTC, AFROTC seems MUCH riskier given the low EA numbers that are coming out. I'm kinda glad we didn't have to get into the whole "AROTC v. NROTC" debate.

Oh well, at least DD is in a boat with some fine company. "We are sorry, you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you. "

Good thing she applied AROTC last minute because of a possible change of heart about intended major.

I'm guessing the majority of the NROTC scholarships probably went to Tier 1 majors. Who knows though. Perhaps a year from now we'll have a final accounting of how many and what type of scholarships were offered this year as compared to last year. I honestly don't think that many fewer were offered, but I do get the feeling the momentum is swinging even further toward Tier 1 than ever before.

She has a couple of offers for 3 yr. AROTC scholarships directly from the PMSes in case a 4 yr. does not come out of the last AROTC Board, which I assume will be announced sometime between Apr. 1 and Apr. 15.

SAME HERE! Can't understand it really...."I am sorry you were not selected...." Blah Blah Blah....Very shocked to see the news late yesterday for DS. I even had to log out and log back into his portal to read it again.

I have absolutely no idea what they were looking for...does anyone know how many kids were picked up for scholarships? He has a nom for West Point and AFA... wait list for West Point and still haven't gotten anything from AFA, Eagle Scout, Valedictorian of his class and on and on.

At least he has a 4 year for AROTC. Honestly as a mom I was POSITIVE he would be picked up. DS is so much better at it then his dad and I. I feel for everyone who got the same notice. At least the stalking of one less sight is done. Sorta sad though... The end on an era:thumbdown:....

I am so sorry to hear about those of you receiving the "we're sorry" notices. My DS still says "no decision" but I fear it will change to the sorry message any time given where NROTC is in the selection cycle. As I read about all of these very, very qualified kids, I now realize I completely under estimated the competitiveness of NROTC.

We also underestimated it as well. DS went to Dukes ROTC and UNC last year and met with the colleges along with ROTC. THey ASSURED him that if he applied for a minor in a lang. that he would automatically get one. Ha guess they were wrong. Oh well. A straight answer would have been better. On to plan B, AROTC 4 year. Still on the hold patern with AFA and West Point.... Good luck everyone!

What date do think your package get to the board? Was it in their hands before mid November? I'm wondering if they got a lot of December or later packages only to find out that their final scholarship 'budget' was relatively low and they could not offer many more scholarships and if you didn't get your package in around the November or ealier timeframe it became ridiculously competitive amongst those the board reviewed in 2011 for the first time.

Yes NROTC is very competitive. NROTC stated goal is to offer 1830 scholarships to enroll 925 for the incoming 2011-2012.

For the typical majority of applicants (CNSB continuous national selection board) NROTC intends to offer 1133 scholarships to enroll 519. The other approx 400 scholarships include nurse, cyber, immediate scholarship, minority serving institutions and language regional expertise and cultural awareness

I believe DS had everything done by Early to mid November. GRRRR. oh well. I am proud of him for trying and getting this far! Congrats to everyone who got one. He's trying to get his AROTC transferred to ERAU Daytona. Hopefully that will work but if not he has a 4 year to Rutgers with another academic one to cover Room and Board. Hope everyone else hears soon!

My son's package was submitted prior to the August 2010 board. The recruiter was practically frantic to get it done, and actually came to our house to get the final paperwork signed. We were told to expect to hear something by September. We've heard nothing since then, and when I called down to P'cola to see if there was some problem with his package, the LT to whom I spoke quickly told me that while my son was undoubtedly very special, so was everyone else. I'm increasingly certain that they lost his package and refuse to look for it. It makes no sense that he's good enough to get into several of the top schools in the country (along with significant merit scholarships), but not good enough for NROTC. I've seen the Navy make some breathtakingly stupid decisions over the years, but this still perplexes me!

Hi HappyKat!

Which of his three appointments is your son going to accept, or will he do NROTC? Since he received his appointments several months ago, I am hoping that he has been able to at least determine which service academy he wants to attend by this point, and that he has turned down the other two so that he can free up spots for other kids.

My son immediately turned down AFROTC and AROTC after he received NROTC. He had friends waiting for both AFROTC and AROTC, so he didn't want to tie up scholarship money. He is still waiting on USNA, but is also very happy with his NROTC options.

I am a college program MIDN and I'm awaiting word on the MO Scholarship. Does anyone have any info on MO 3-year scholarships or notifications of the scholarships?

Really sorry to hear this - I was hoping he was going to end up at Harvard NROTC!

Please let us know how it goes tonight (tonight, right?) for the Ivies! And best of luck to him wherever he may end up (sounds like he's considering the best! ).

Hi, marciemi! Yes, tonight was the night for the ivy leagues. DS got dinged from Harvard -- his Facebook status now reads proudly: "Got rejected from Harvard!" He likely wouldn't have posted that if he didn't have USMA. It's funny to read all of his HS classmates posting their thoughts on his Facebook page! I think DS has the right attitude. :thumb:

In any event, DS's list is narrow right now, and I don't want to post that list because it will limit my ability to post questions about ROTC-related subjects without potentially outing him. I would prefer to keep it at School A, School B, and School B at this point.

It seems for NROTC and Harvard this year that "turning water into wine" just wasn't good enough -- candidates had to be able to "turn water into wine AND back into water again" to get the nod. Of course, if you had the right major or had other factors in your favor, the whole water/wine thing may not have been as significant. That's life.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. Been reading the Harvard threads over on CC and it's just downright depressing to see the kids that are being rejected. I don't think the water/wine/water thing would even cause them to blink an eye these days!

Best of luck to your son and I'll be watching to see where he finally decides on! :thumb:
