November NROTC board results known?

You have an amazing kid, NROTCAlumDad. Did he also apply to AROTC and AFROTC as well as the SAs?

Thanks! He really is pretty amazing, and I'm very proud of him. We come from a Navy/Marine family on both sides (me, my father and brother, my wife's father and brother, two of my nephews). He had no interest in joining the Army or Air Force, nor did he wish to go to any of the academies. He doesn't have dreams of being career Navy, but wanted to carry on the family tradition of service. He was offered a full ride to Fordham, so he's not dependent upon NROTC to pay for school.

OP may have more infor regarding significance of status change. At a minimum it is a change and your file is being reviewed.

Have you verified NROTC battalion enrollment status of top five NROTC schools. You may discover some are full and have to revise your top 5 ranking.

How does one verify enrollment status at the schools? My son e-mailed the CO of his top pick to ask that question, but has not received a response. His recruiter has been generally unhelpful.

Call and ask to speak to freshmen adviser, student adviser or admin asst. Responding to your email may not be CO's top priority.

Interesting. My DS wants *only* to be a Marine officer. He absolutely refused to apply to the USMA or the AFA or ROTC or AFROTC. Even though I begged to consider broadening his options. So, of course, he got neither MO NROTC nor USNA, despite really solid SAT (1400 and grades (4.0 weighted with lots of AP). So now, it is either SMC or regular NROTC at civilian colleges of which he has been admitted to all to which he applied. Oh well, he has gotten lots of offers of merit scholarships so we will see.

Has your son considered the PLC program while at college.

CandidateinSD -- isn't your son's scholarship Marine Option? If so, I don't think there are Tiers... tiers are for Navy Option.

Thank you so much, I thought I'd lost my mind..mind you, there's virtually nothing left there after this process :biggrin:

Came home from track practice today expecting to see the yay or nay. Still nothing. Weren't all decisions supposed to be made by April 1st? Shouldn't we have heard already? I just need to know whether I received a scholarship or not, so I can plan where I'm going next year and how I'm paying for college...Still waiting on USNA too, though I've heard very few appointments go out this late in the game.

We checked our sons NROTC Status page and it went from 3 lines saying that his application was pending to:

DS status did the exact same thing on Tuesday with the "no decision has been made..."

We were curious as well. His application did not get finished until very late in the game because of the interview so I assumed that they had just now looked at his application. So have others seen this change as well? Just curious and clueless at the same time. :shake:

Thanks so much everyone for your help on these forums!

@ rule62 and WardNC -

It's my understanding that once your NROTC application leaves the local recruiting officer and goes to Pensacola, it is reviewed for completeness a second time before it goes before a board. Once it is marked complete and board ready, that's when your status will change to what you are seeing now.

Still no big news here, but my son recently updated his school choices based upon his acceptances, and someone in Pensacola actually e-mailed back to get clarification. At this point I'm taking ANY communication from the Navy as a good sign!

Well, finally heard from the Navy: "We regret..." This process is broken beyond belief! Good enough for the Ivies and Georgetown, but not for the Navy...

Case closed for our applicant as well. Sad and terribly disappointed, but undeterred and resolute to commission and serve. I'm so very proud of my kid right now.

My heart goes out to all of you.

As hard as it is to read it really isn't about good enough for the school, but not for the Navy. It is about a limited amount of funds for that cadre. It is similar to getting accepted to a college and types of FA you receive. Some will get merit, some will get FA. Both are worthy of admission, but when the pot of money is divided some just rank higher. It does not mean one is going to be a better student, it means at this time one shined a little bit more.

That is the NROTC system, it is tied to the cadet and the school. If the school is only allotted 1 scholarship and have 10 candidates, 9 are going to get the TWE.

It is not a predictor of their success. Many cadets not on scholarship graduate higher than those on scholarship.

Here are a few realities re:ROTC
1. Minute one that scholarship will not play a part in their success.
~~~Mids don't sort them out into favorites because they have a scholarship and the others don't.
They couldn't care one iota what the NROTC board decided. It is all about you, the mid. Get a scholarship and fall out of the run, they will know your name and not in a good way. Get there and have the highest rank in the cadre even as a non-scholarship mid, they will know your name, but now in a good way.
2. Scholarship recipients are in the minority.
3. On graduation day, most ROTC's will also hold the commissioning ceremony.
~~~ You will not be sitting in the audience waiting to pin on those butter bars thinking about the TWE. It will not even cross your mind.

You will be sitting there beaming from ear to ear, and crying that the child you said goodbye to this August became a man/woman in a blink of an eye.

I get all of the emotions, it is just that I am now a mom of a rising C400 (sr) and views change in time. Isn't that what we always tell our kids? We tell them that there is always a reason, and only time will show it to us.

My very best wishes that all of your kids dreams come true. I also hope you stay the course. It is worth it.

Where do these statistics come from?

Yes NROTC is very competitive. NROTC stated goal is to offer 1830 scholarships to enroll 925 for the incoming 2011-2012.

For the typical majority of applicants (CNSB continuous national selection board) NROTC intends to offer 1133 scholarships to enroll 519. The other approx 400 scholarships include nurse, cyber, immediate scholarship, minority serving institutions and language regional expertise and cultural awareness

Can you let us know where these statistics come from? Would you happen to know where to find the total number of applicants for NROTC scholarship spots in 2011/12.

Well, finally heard from the Navy: "We regret..." This process is broken beyond belief! Good enough for the Ivies and Georgetown, but not for the Navy...

I actually reached Ms. Parker on the phone the other day before they updated the website and she broke the sad news to me also. No scholarship for my son. We prayed hard for it but mostly for acceptance, regardless of the result. As it turns out, the scholarship was not part of God's plan for him. He's undeterred and will be attending Univ of Virginia and will participate under the college program. We are out of state, so yes, it will be a struggle and we'll have to sacrifice alot to pay his way, but I have to think that the scholarship went to some other kid who could otherwise not afford to go to school at all. For all we know, that kid might be a future Bull Halsey or John McCain. To all others similarly situated, lets all remember that there is a reason for everything and our kids are bright and talented and will succeed if they are determined. I have confidence in my son.
To all those on this site, thank you for your wisdom and your guidance throughout these last 8 months and best of luck to all the scholarship recipients.
