It appears that the candidates this yr have amazing stats.

Congrats to all!

Boys State

Declared major is Mechanical Engineering

Waiting on USMA and USNA selection or not.

Did anyone check this morning and see the old status and then check again to find it has been updated with good news? I'm also trying to figure out if more updates will occur throughout the day.

Anxiously waiting..

I have checked DS staus page twice this morning and no updates. He had all materials in by Sept 1st so I feel certain his file was reviewed at first boards. I am very anxious about the whole process. He on the other hand is calm and taking a very mature approach. (I could learn from his example.:redface:) My questions is, will there be updates trickling in throughout today and early next week or if there isn't an update by end-of-business today can we assume he will be re-boarded in January?

I want to congratulate all of the young men and women awarded scholarships thus far. The stats I am seeing are truly impressive! The caliber of candidates is amazing! You all have a lot to be proud of.:thumb:

It can trickle in over the next few days, but as I said before it is not 1 at candidate at a time, it is batches at a time. It use to be, at least for AFROTC that once they had X percentage of candidates placed into the system, they would release the results. They kept repeating the process until they hit 100%.

Remember the 1st board is not their bulk board. It is their board that they know no matter what will get a scholarship. This is also one reason why you see amazing stats.

I say that because some candidates will be concerned looking at these stats when it comes to their chances. Don't be.

I will caveat that statement with, over the past few yrs the stats have become stronger/higher every yr because the amount of scholarships offered are less and less.

Thanks

Thanks for the encouragement and information. These boards have been abundantly helpful.

Texas A&M. This is out of state college
.
Actually, not. TAMU charges in-state tuition for ROTC cadets.

Congratulations. It must be a huge sense of satisfaction getting a positive decision so early in the process!

Jcleppe,

Just a quick correction, DoDMERB DOES NOT decide if a waiver will be given, the source does, in this case it would be AROTC.

All DoDMERB does is Q or DQ.

I do agree I can't see them waiting until April, usually the request for the exam occurs very quickly after the scholarship is awarded.

I would assume they will be DQ'd or at the very least be given a remedial. Whatever they determine you just need to go through the process.

That's what I said, it will come down to Dodmerb, I should have added the DQ part,

Congratulations to all who have heard good news, good luck to those waiting.

I saw all these posts so I hurried over and checked my status. I received a AROTC scholarship to Kansas University. (If only West Point could tell me in November :smile:)

Some stats:

ACT: Reading 36/English 34/Math 32/Science/34
Multiple Varsity Letters in Football and Golf
Football Captain
Two time state winner of Scholars Bowl (academic team)
Scholars Bowl Captain
NHS
Master Acolyte
400+ community hours
National Merit Semifinalist (app. pending)
Rank 5/151
Multiple 5's on AP tests.

I just want to thank everyone on this forum for all the helpful information about ROTC. Now, its back to Senator interviews...

With those stats, and being from KS, I am guessing, you have a great shot at WP.

That brings this back to understanding the ROTC scholarship process.

Daaltaraan has been offered a scholarship, and obviously it is their plan B. They will accept the scholarship since it isn't binding, for AROTC that is money out of the pot.

SA appointments usually come out in Mass in March, thus, that money is tied up until at least they get a BFE. If the bulk of appointments comes out in March, it could be after the last board. This is why posters stress get your paperwork in early.

Secondly, some appointees will not throw their scholarship back in until they report to the SA for fear of if they are injured they would be a medical turnback, and this is their back up plan to pay for college.

As a candidate you need to understand how even in April/May it is still fluid. Look at Mom421 and armydaughter, both of their children received scholarships, but to their 3rd/4th choice. Come spring they maybe looking to get it changed to their number 1 or 2 school.

PIMA: This brings up a question I have had in my head for a while.
Assume DS gets a 4yr ROTC scholarship (in particular a NROTC-MO) and accepts it.
Then in March/April timeframe gets a BFE from USNA (fingers crossed). If he holds on to the NROTC-MO scholarship till I-Day (makes sure he passes color vision test), then releases the scholarship around 1 July, what happens to the scholarship.
Is it offered to the next deserving candidate? If we are lucky enough to be in this situation, I would hate the thought that if he held on to a back-up plan, some very dedicated/deserving candidate could be left out...

I won't speak for NROTC, but for AFROTC it goes back into the pot, and not offered.

ROTC has a historical number in their vault that they use regarding % awarded, and % activated in the fall.

2-3 yrs ago, AFROTC used that number, but because AFROTC scholarship board does not talk to the AFA, it became an issue. AFA announced late into the apptmt cycle that they were severely cutting the apptmts. That meant more of the scholarship recipients were activating the scholarship. Due to that fact they cancelled IS (NROTC college programmer equivalent) scholarships for a yr. They had used up all of their money for that commissioning yr group.

The following yr., knowing that AFA would reduce class size, they also took a new approach so they wouldn't be in trouble for IS.

If I recall correctly last yr., posters have stated that AROTC has their own twist because they talk to USMA regarding candidates. I won't swear by it, but if the USMA and AROTC candidate does not get an appointment, they will revisit their package.
~~~ No 1000 lashes with a wet lomein noodle, I just recall that was a topic in the spring.
As for your DS getting the BFE, and holding onto the scholarship it is always a hot topic button.
~~~ Some feel it is selfish because other deserving candidates won't get the scholarship
~~~ Some feel that if the candidate was deserving that holding onto it would not stop AROTC from offering them a scholarship in the 1st place.
JMPO, but I would hold onto it until I-Day. I have known some that hold onto it until Aug., because the fact is 5% will not make it through BCT.
Kids are kids, and many of these candidates play spring sports. Break a leg at the last tennis match or baseball game in the end of May, they will become a medical turnback.
My best advice to any poster that is opting ROTC as plan B, accept the scholarship and pay the deposit for the college. 300-500 bucks for a deposit is worth your sanity.
Last year my son held his AROTC scholarship until the week of the last board. He notified CC and his school PMS that he was declining. The PMS scrambled to make sure the scholarship would get re-issued during the last board.
He held his AFROTC scholarship until the last possible minute. He did not release it until he cleared medical at USCGA.
He earned the scholarship and should not feel guilty about keeping a viable backup plan. The money has been budgeted and will be used one way or another. I am sure they also budget for a percentage of late declines.
Pima,
If DS did not receive scholarship to first or second choice but did receive scholarship to third choice on first board will DS be re-boarded for first and second choice or is that it?
Son's stats
Son was awarded an ROTC scholarship to Georgetown University, his third choice. His stats were:
SAT: 710(math), 710(reading), 700 (writing)
Top 10%
4.4 GPA
Varsity Soccer
National club soccer team
NHS
JROTC
MUN, Model Congress, Fed Challenge (some awards at these things)
Boys State (alternate to boys nation)
Political internships over the summer
I forget his PFT scores, but I was impressed when I heard them.
Good luck to everyone else who is waiting to hear.
waxyjr,
No he will not be re-boarded, see my post about why it will be fluid through next April/May.
Come next spring after the boards have ended, and dust has settled, he can apply to have it transferred to his number 1 or 2 choice.
There will always be candidates that get a scholarship to a school they weren't accepted to for admission.
There will be some that take an SA apptmt.
That leaves vacancies and with those if you request a transfer they may grant it.
It is another process, but in short no, he will not be re-boarded once offered a scholarship.
Mom421,
Georgetown as number 3 is pretty impressive. If you don't mind me asking what were numbers 1 and 2?
Pima,
My son really likes Georgetown and seems to be very excited about the possibility of attending that school on ROTC scholarship, he says they have a great battalion. However, he listed Harvard as his number one choice (a stretch, I know) and Claremont Mckenna as his second choice (a school he really fell in love with). Since filling out the ROTC application, he has really brought up his SAT scores (now a 2290) making both of those schools more of a possibility for him. He was a little bummed not to see Claremont (and probably Harvard too) as an option. What are your thoughts?
I am NOT an AROTC Mom, just old time poster using historical posts to pass on to new posters.
From what I understand, where your DS would stand now is come April/May he would have to request that his AROTC scholarship be transferred to Harvard or Claremont.
If there is an opening AROTC may grant it, if there isn't than they won't.
As an AFROTC Mom, I have to say, I like their process better because the scholarship is tied to the cadet, not the college.. AROTC it is tied to the college and the cadet.
I would never tell anyone to go AFROTC over AROTC because the reality is college is the fun part even in ROTC. AD is real world.
If you are asking my opinion regarding ROTC, I would say contact the dets if you haven't already and visit them. Ask the CoC to have some cadets to meet with your DS.
Do not attend that portion, because when parents are there with ROTC cadets it is more like a dog and pony show. You leaving, allows 2 things:
1. Kids being kids.
2. Meeting him at a place on campus 45-60 minutes later allows him to walk the campus as if he was a freshman. Kids see him as another student when he is alone, kids see him with parents as a HS student.
Colleges have their own personality, so do the dets. He may love Claremont campus, but has he met the cadets at Claremont? It is not uncommon for kids to love the campus, but love a different det. As I said earlier, dets have unique personalities.
Overall underwhelmed
I'm a little underwhelmed at the number of people posting here today that actual had a status change.... I was expecting the boards to "blowup" with scholarships. If I'm counting right, there are only 4-5 actual people hearing something today.
