Official USAFA Class of 2016 Appointment thread

Can someone please give me clarification on this, thanks.

So is it only recruited athletes that are receiving appointments as of now? (16 March)

or is everyone receiving appointments, thank you!

"IMPORTANT NOTE – Due to recent Secretary of the Air Force mandates, the number of appointments for the Class of 2016 will be the smallest in recent history. As a result, respective candidate appointment information will not be provided until the later part of March and final notifications will not be completed until the first week of April. Admissions appreciates your understanding and patience." -Official Message from USAFA Admissions.

In a way, yes. This means that MOST appointments won't be sent out until the end of March. There are however a few exceptions for the recruited athletes and candidates that have a high WCS who have already received their appointments. Likewise, there will be appointments that trickle out well into April and even May, so there is nothing to be alarmed with quite yet. As a candidate myself, I too am starting to get anxious but I know that I won't be hearing from admissions until at least sometime next week. Hope this made sense to you I just got back from a nice long run. Good luck!

Regarding Appointments:

My son received his appointment dated 2/28/2012 and we received it in our mailbox on 3/1/2012. He was the Principal Nominee from our congressional district in CA, but was not a recruited athlete. We did not hear from our MOC first, but rather received the BFE on 3/1/2012 and the information about his medical waiver (which he needed in order to be admitted) the following day on 3/2/2012. So, even though the letter for his appointment was sent on 2/28/2012, we did not celebrate until he received the medical waiver on 3/2/2012. My son still cannot stop smiling and he cannot wait to go to "I" Day. We pray for all of you as we truly understand how painfully difficult it is to wait for the answer. You are a wonderful group, both parents and students; and I know it will be an honor for my son to serve with young men and women as talented, honorable, sincere, and bright as those whom I have seen posting news on this site. My best to all of you. Please keep us posted on your news...

What does WCS stand for?

Before the bulk of BFEs arrive,

Hopefully the bulk of BFEs will arrive this coming week, as I know I can barely stand the wait anymore, and I know others feel the same way.

Before they arrive, I wanted to say thank you to the parents who served our Nation and raised children who want to do the same, with the values they learned at home, and will continue to live at USAFA and after commissioning. I also want to say thank you to the parents who never served in the military, for raising kids with the patriotic values they have developed at home that caused them to want to serve our Nation and others.

With all the bad news we hear every day on TV and the Internet, this is such a good news story! What a great country America is, where generation after generation compete to attend Service Academies like USAFA, where there are outstanding opportunities for scholarships in higher education like ROTC, where systems truly are fair, and people who don't even know each other discuss, support and assist each other on forums like this.

I don't know if my DS will receive a BFE. But I feel honored to be a part of all of this. Thank you, and good luck to everyone!

~Into-the-Blue~ New Here ~

Hi All!

Just found this forum today and I am amazed I didn't find it sooner!

I am a Class of 2016 hopeful from Colorado, and I hope to soon hear from the Academy as well. I am getting somewhat anxious, but more and more excited as the days and weeks go by. I am still waiting for late March to roll around and hopefully a BFE to show up! Good luck to you all, and congratulations to those who have already received your appointments! You deserve it!

Welcome! Best wishes. :thumb:

I just found this forum but am very pleased to see I'm not the only one neurotically checking websites and mailboxes for the BFE. Wish my DS luck please

Welcome Into Blue and Katsmom...I think you'll find this forum a minor "pressure relief valve," as we're all going through this together. We understand the stress and support each other as best we can. Personally, I believe that laughter is the best medicine, as do several others. Thankfully, the waiting will be over in the next 3-4 weeks. Good Luck!

Just found this forum as well .. was feeling a little psychotic there for a while - looks like I am normal though! Been anxious about this for quite some time now for the sake of my son. He has been accepted to his 2nd choice after the Academy, but still hopeful this is where he ends up! I will continue to stalk the mailbox and the website for the news. :thumb:

How do you learn about your CWS ?

I realize the selection criteria is very complex and it is hard to quantify what it takes to get selected, but does anyone want to take a stab at what type of criteria might make for a high probability person, and what might be a highly improbable person? Assuming you pass all the basic criteria (medical, drug, fitness, etc.) is there a "slam dunk" ACT score, nomination type, certain extracurricula, etc? On the negative....if a liason officer thinks you are a bad fit is that a deal killer? If you are below a 3.0 ? Etc.

Well as for nomination type, being a principal nominee while having only mediocre everything else is a definite plus because that happened for me and I believe that were it not for my principal nomination, I would have a REALLY hard time getting in especially this year. Still don't really know how I pulled it off. As for the "slam dunk" ACT scores, you kind of answered this yourself. If you have a perfect ACT score and are well rounded, of good character, and get a nomination, you have a fairly good chance of getting in.

If you are looking for a goal to set to increase your chances of getting in, look at the averages of each class and aim for at least 15% higher than that. Get involved in a couple or serval extracurriculars and become GREAT in them (captain of the team, president of a club, eagle scout, etc.).

And of course, there are deal breakers. If you don't meet the minimum standardized test scores or if you ALO thinks you're of really bad character, it will reflect in your admissions file and may disqualify you from being a candidate. If you don't think you're the absolute star candidate, at least strive to be better than average by at least 15%.

Great question!

Hi Dutchman,
Well, my recommendation is to read all the posts under the USAFA Appointment thread and the USAFA Mailbox Stalkers thread. That should either give you insight (or confuse you more). Then hold your breath for three days, click your heels and say, There's no place like USAFA!

Once you read all the threads you'll discover that we've all tried to make these calculations already, but there is no magic formula. You just have to wait. But here's a tip: read slowly, you'll take up more time!

Good luck!:thumb:

I wish I had your sense of humor right now Yorkiemom! I don't though, as I am a nervous wreck for my DS, so I do appreciate yours!:thumb:

Little Help Please

Im new to the forum here but I was wondering if you guys could answer some questions. I am a USAFA 16 hopeful and I still have received no word. I have a presidential nom and a senators nom. Im from MD. Should I be worried that I havent heard? Is their different time tables for senatorial noms and presidential?

Also if I was offered the prep school how likely is an appointment after that?

Some basic Stats:
SAT: 2050
740 Verbal
640 Math
670 Writing
3.6 GPA

Active in NJROTC, CAP, NHS, Varsity XC, Track and Varsity Swim Team Captain.

Thank you

@usaffanatic, based on your scores you most likely will not be offered a prep school appt based on your scores/extracurriculars

To answer your second question, no idea. Haha I'm still waiting myself but probably within the next couple of weeks

usaffanatic, you should probably check out the Mailbox Stalkers thread. Upon reading it, you will find that you should definitely not be worried that you haven't read back yet since the majority of people are in the same boat as you.
