Official USAFA Class of 2016 Appointment thread

Thanks to all who post here. DS and I have used this forum for info over the past year. This is a first time post.

DS portal changed today to appointment offered. OH-12 (Tiberi). Another student from our HS got the call from Reps office so we've been on pins and needles waiting to hear.

Congrats to all who received good news today and best wishes to those still waiting to hear.

Thaks, YM, for the support.
Normally, I'd agree with you, but in this case, it seems that everyone who will be getting an appointment (except a couple late exceptions) DID get an appointment.
But congrats to YOUR son, who is apparently better qualified than me! :thumb:

Like Dad said, "The majority of appointments are going out this week but it will go out through mid April." There's still plenty of time!

Thinking that those candidates who are being charged to their MOC and winning their slate are being notified from the list of appointments on this thread. I think that those appointments from the national pool will be next as well as those with presidentals and ROTC noms. I would assume there is still more appointments to come.

Feeling low in NC

I've been watching the forums for a few weeks now and am feeling quite sad today. This is my son's second time applying. Last year I didn't know about the forums and so we just waited until the TWE came. Okay, that was fine. He applied again and contacted his ALO about how to improve his chances. Since his portal hasn't changed I'm assuming he didn't get an appointment. I know that things happen last minute, but I have to tell you that I learned a lot from everyone's posts about what he should be doing for next year. There is a thread titled "reapplying for 2017" (or something like that) that gives some great tips. This is much more info than we got from his ALO last year.

But these past few weeks were definitely more stressful than a year ago. There is bliss in ignorance. Don't get me wrong; I'm glad I found the forums. But I feel like I need to step away for now and just live life. If it happens, it happens.

Congrats to all who received appointments! You are on your way to becoming great leaders and we all wish you the best. Hopefully we will see you in 2017, because my son, bless his heart, is going to apply again. I do believe, however, that if this is not God's plan for him, he will still go on to do great things. He plans to stay in AFROTC and hopes to go to flight school. So one way or another he will hopefully reach his dream of flying for the USAF.

And so the application process begins again...

writemom,

I hope you take this to heart.

Bullet (DH) was AFROTC commissioned. In the AD world nobody discusses this just like in ROTC scholarship is not discussed.

His commission source will not be a factor in the AD world.

The goal should never be commissioning source, it should be commissioning!

30 yrs from now, his AF career will be over. He will be forgotten. The AF will not be crying over his grave when he is 80 or 90. His family will!

Again, I know you feel the pain, every parent does, but the big picture is important.

Bullet commissioned in 87 via AFROTC. He was DG at IFS, RTU --- rated. There were AFA grads. He was DP for promotions. He got PME at a sister school, while AFA grads didn't.

I am not trying to knock the AFA, I am stating don't let your heartbreak, or believe it is over.

He has a path, and the minute you accept it, is the minute life will change.

OBTW, for AFROTC classes 12 and 13, they have a 90-95% chance of getting rated.

Physical Training

Does anyone have any advise on how our DS could prepare physically for basic? He received word today of an appointment today and, even though he is in good shape, this will be the biggest physical challenge of his life. Since we have 90 days or so, he wants to prepare.

Words of advise from anyone who has been through basic would be most appreciated ...

All Glory and Honor to God ...

2016USAFA...(and anyone else feeling this way)

Hold you head high, this is not over.

But, when it is and if your portal hasn't changed to "Appointment Offered" it will still say "CANDIDATE". That is huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You are a success no matter what.

To get to the CANDIDATE status means you are on the right track.

If you want this, you need to dig in and find out where you need to improve and strive to make those improvements. From what I have read on this forum, those that will apply again and work very hard to make excellent first year college grades have a wonderful chance of getting in second time around. It shows perseverance and dedication. It shows you will be successful academically in the college environment.

If you want this DON'T GIVE UP. Take some time off, have fun the rest of your senior year and start again. Good luck to you and I'll be praying for the Lord to lead you down the path that will be the right one for you.

Blessings,

The USAFA candidate pamphlet I got said they recommended half an hour of exercising routine every day including pushups, pullups, sutips, and the mile run. There may have been more, but I don't remember it.

This is soooo stressful!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement YorkieMom, USAFA2012Mom, Dad and all those praying! I have been so afraid that DS won't get in over the last week! I'm driving myself NUTS (not that I wasn't already)!!! I keep wondering if something went wrong with his file, maybe something got lost or reported incorrectly, maybe, maybe, maybe... The truth is - those that have gotten offers are incredible, deserving young people!! We are in line with you.

The Facebook page did say there will be more appointments though mid April. So there is still hope. I imagine there will be a few more even after mid April once all the acceptances are in and they know who has declined their offer.

Praying for everyone that is still waiting; blessings, peace and strength to you. You have all worked so hard for this so don't lose hope.

Congratulations to all of you that have received appointments!!! You will soon be part of the class of 2016!

Run, run, run. The altitude is a real adjustment for alot of cadets. Follow a regular excercise regime augmented with running. Also, make sure to spend quality time together with family and friends. Blessings. :thumb:

So no change in the portal would mean I'm out, I assume?
From what I understand the answer is "no," you're not out of the running...yet. Most folk's portal is the last way people find out, usually notification is from your MoC, or a BFE in the mailbox. A few people have found out from seeing it on the portal first, but I'll bet the BFE comes within one or two days after the portal changed. Which means the BFE was in the mail before the portal was updated. So it depends on where you live as to when the mail will get to you.

On another note, you are out if all of the MoC's appointments have been given, and even then the MoC won't know that until the candidate accepts the appointment, it's possible some people will turn it down for various reasons, believe it or not. The accepted appointments are charged to the MoC, not just the offer. Nominations could also be charged to VP, supt., etc. And this is another wrench in the works that make it impossible to guess whether a particular congressional district has all of it's slots filled.

So... Worst case scenario in MB stalking. If you have only a MoC nomination, and all the appointments have been offered so far to date, you still are in the running if one of the offers has been turned down. And you may not know that for several weeks. Even then the "magical mystery board" waves their wands and makes decisions that I'm sure are very sound and well thought out, but is beyond us mere mortals to understand. I guess I'm saying all this to give you encouragement, but it isn't necessarily a bad idea to know that most will accept their appointment, that's reality. It's best to have a plan B in place and start getting excited about it. There's many routes to becoming a commissioned USAF officer, and plan B may be the best for you to attain that dream. Good Luck!

Found out about DD's appointment today via the portal. Just got back from pulling her out of school to give her the news. Her nomination was from Hon. John Yarmuth (KY-03).

Thank you for the good advise. We are at sea level here, so running it is!

DS just received appointment in his portal. He received his nomination from LaTourette, Ohio. I understand LaTourette already had two appointments. So he must be a third through the national pool.

Last year there were several mailbox stalkers who received the dreaded TWE and vowed to apply again. Some have reapplied and received Appointments. Others found themselves very content with their plan B and opted not to reapply. The quality of candidates that have made it this far is high. You will be successful regardless of acceptance or deferral. The goal is to serve in the world's greatest air and space force. AFA is not the only or necessarily even the most preferred way to that end. Bottom line, you are either in or out. How you face the result is up to you. Some go to the Academy gung-ho and realize the Academy is not what they thought it was. Others go to a prep school and realize they were not ready and now are. There are some who get deferred and find they enjoy their plan B.

My point is fate has a way of getting you on the best path for you. Even if you say today “I want USAFA”, you may not think that way a year from now. Whether you call it destiny, Karma, or God’s Plan; you will end up where you belong. Reading these forums tells me that this year’s candidates are top notch and you should all be proud to have made it this far. I offer my congratulations to all of you. To those appointed: enjoy your time before I-Day. To those still waiting: I encourage you to keep the faith and know that you have a bright future ahead of you.

Best wishes to all. :thumb:
