I just got a voicemail from USAFA that my son didn't get in, and the TWE will be coming within the next 2 weeks. I haven't told him yet...

Be sure to verify to the source of that message. I have yet to hear of USAFA contacting people directly.
Out of curiosity did they give you any reason as to why your son wasnt accepted?

I too, like the others, am curious about this message. I'm sorry to hear he didn't get in. I hope he takes the news well, and is successful next year if he reapplies!

I called his USAFA admitting counselor (Bonnie Madison) that was listed on his online application and left a message on Friday for her to call me back if she had any information regarding his status. Another woman, not Bonnie, must have called sometime Friday afternoon, but I didn't see the message until today. The woman said my son was a strong candidate, but others with nominations were stronger. I hope some of you still waiting to hear have better news.

Your son will probably get a QNV... it's a rough thing to be told, yes, you made all the requirements but others made them better. I hope your DS loves his Plan B and chooses to reapply if this is truly his dream. Congrats on raising a great son (he must be if he made it this far in the process!) and best wishes for the future!

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Does anyone know if it is the same process to reapply for next year? Can my son use any of the letters of rec. he already turned in this year? (I can't imagine college professors taking the time to write a letter.) Also, will he have to retake SAT's and ACT's while in college? Thanks for any info.

Today seems a little brighter than yesterday. :)

Unless he is a Falcon Scholar, his application will be wiped and he must go through the entire admissions process again. If he gets a QNV letter, he should contact his Admissions Counselor to get feedback/direction about what was weak in his app. His ALO may be able to provide insight as well. We all know this year was crazy tough so he may just need slightly higher scores all the way around. He should definitely retake both the SAT and ACT again unless he has a near perfect score. If he wasn't maxing the CFA, he should consider getting a professional trainer to help him. And of course he needs to rock in his college courses. My DS attended NWP out in California as a Falcon but he was committed to going there as a Free Agent even before he received the scholarship. A number of NWP free agents have received the BFE this year. I do not know the percentage of free agents that received an appointment, but NWP is a great program and is beneficial to the candidate no matter where they head afterwards.

Falcons have an abbreviated application process. They are required to take every ACT or SAT available and get good grades and a nomination but the ALO interview, letters of recommendation, and essays are waived.

Hope that helps. You can always PM for additional details.

Also, unless things have changed, I believe from other posters that your DS will be locked out from applying until July sometime.

It is nothing personal, it is like when you give up your phone number, it is placed out of availability for a while to make sure there is no confusion.

I don't know if you are from a principal nom area, but any times the MOC also likes to see a 2nd timer and will give their principal to that applicant. I know that a very prominent Cong. from VA does that yr after yr when he has 2nd timers. People get upset over it, but it is his right to do it that way.

Right you are Pima. The Admissions site says that 2016 candidates can't start their new app until July 1 which will be here before we know it.

Ways of contact

We are still awaiting news regarding my sons application. I'm worried it's becoming the issue that if he hasn't heard by now, it's not good news. Will he see a status change or anything in his profile either way?

Congratulations to everyone who has good news already!

Maybe I'm wrong, but after I got my QNV, I didn't see any change until after I was offered prep school. So I would guess there's no change until the July 1st deadline, when your DS can start a new application if he so chooses. But don't give up hope yet, plenty of appointments are still waiting to be had, I understand!

USAFA: 2016! is correct. His online application page (also referred to as portal) will read "Candidate" and "Complete" until July when they will reopen the application page again. Until you receive a Qualified No Vacancy letter, don't stop hoping. The chances are small, but anything can happen until you get that letter. Don't hold out on other colleges in the mean time, because the majority of appointments have gone out, and the remaining appointments will mostly be going to falcons and prep schoolers.

falcons or prep schoolers

Im sorry I dont understand the reference to falcons (I do understand the reference to prep schoolers)

Am I understanding then that the denial letters go out last?

Please explain what is meant by the falcon spots

greatly appreciated!

Just like USAFA has spots for the Prep School, the Falcon Foundation offers Scholarships which pay part of the tuition for private prep schools like New Mexico Military Institute, Northwestern Prep School, etc.. Their mission is similar to the Prep School in that they are preparing young people academically, physically, and militarily for the rigors of Academy life. Traditionally, Prepsters and Falcons assist with Basic training by having gone through it once themselves. My DS's roomate in Basic was a Prepster. He showed DS some tricks on making beds within standards and military protocol. DS was very appreciative of the Prepster's assistance throughout basic.

There are several Falcons on these forums who can attest to the great value of a Falcon Foundation Scholarship. Also, there are those who "self-prep" at these schools in order to improve their Appointment chances next year.
