Last year we had 128 names of those that were appointed. If we round the decrease in appointments to say, 10%, then we should see about 115 names on this thread. That means there should be more appointments coming including LEAD, Prep School, and Falcons. That means we have about 40 names to go. Best wishes everyone!

Question about remaining offers....

What does it mean that the "National" offers will be going out this week? I understand that Presidentials are for the children of veterans and the ROTC offers are for the ROTC people. Also...............depending on the level of acceptance by the current group that have received appointments....is it correct to say that more offers may go out if enough people decline the USAFA? If so.........this is slow torture for candidates and parents.

Selections made off of the NWL (National Wait list) for those not "charged to their MOC.

Do you expect that presidental appointments would also be release along with the national wait list? I know there are a few presidentals reported but my DS has both a MOC and presidental and was not the principal nom. We expected he would be place into the national pool or charged to his presidental if appointed.

Follow -up on question about "Nationals"

In my case my rep. had only one slot to offer and I was not smart enough to also pursue the Senatorial route ..... but it appears someone else got that slot. Now ....if my DS is a strong candidate they might try to place him in the national pool. My thinking is that he would have to be very very strong to fall into this pool...........not just above average in every category. Comments?

Subjective assessment for next year

Another question to throw out to everyone ..... how do you get a good honest subjective assessment of your DS's attractiveness to the USAFA. My sense is that it is far too dangerous for the ALO or the congressional person to say something like, " Your DS is a great kid with great accomplishments and great character, but our gut sense if that he is not optimally wired for the USAFA".

Dutchman,

Just curious, have you reviewed the WCS system regarding the weighting % ? If you have you know that 60% of WCS is PAR and 20% goes to ALO, and they share that with other factors.

Also, remember that an ALO has a connection to the AF from the AD world.

Dutchman said:
" Your DS is a great kid with great accomplishments and great character, but our gut sense if that he is not optimally wired for the USAFA".

That would never be stated in any file. It would be submitted in AF terms.

I.E.

Top choice, appoint now!
One of my top choices, appoint
I support this appointee

Conversion to ADAF
Top Choice --- Definite
One of --- You choose
Support --- KINDNESS

ALO's have spent yrs and yrs in the AD world, they know key words and when it comes to it for their candidates, they know how to give a hint, hint to a board and allow the board to interpret their rec.

Remember, that the AFA board has also been through multiple AD promotion boards and they too can tell the difference in the statement.

Gut sense/reaction will never be there. They will brag on all of them, but only some of them will have my TOP CHOICE.

AOL comments

That would be wonderful information to obtain. Will the ALO tell you what they said?

Dutchman; something to remember is: EVERYTHING in an application is converted to Points. Those points are then added to other points, using formulas, to come up with a TOTAL SCORE. This total score is what is used to give out appointments.

This is especially important when it comes to the National Pool. Some ask if they are "Good Enough" to get into the national pool. Every qualified non-selected candidate goes into the national pool. But that final score that you received on your application is how you are ranked. The highest score is #1 and it works down from there. The academy then takes the top "X" amount to fill the class.

The only thing to really consider is when filling the MOC slots. Most MOCs give the academy a slate of 10 names and lets the academy choose which one gets the appointment. Again; the academy will put those 10 nominees in order of total score. Highest #1 through lowest #10. And if the #1 is no longer qualified, or they turn down the appointment, they will go to #2. Unless #2 was also on another slate and got selected there.

So while you are asking about knowing what the ALO "SAID" about a candidate, that isn't really that important. What's important is the final calculated score. What I mean is: A candidate could have lost say 10-20 points based on the ALO interview, but they might have missed getting an appointment by 30 points on their total score. And the total score is a formula. It's an algorithm of many sub categories and scores that are compiled individually, added, averaged, weighted, etc... to come up with a final score. So what you're asking really isn't practical. The only time this would be feasible would be if the candidate walked on water in ALL areas, and the ALO said they were the WORST THEY EVER SAW. In which case, I don't believe the academy would have kept you as a qualified candidate. But for the most part, if a candidate has all the right things like gpa, ACT/SAT, sports, leadership, etc... it's rare that an ALO is going to sabotage a candidate. Not unless they say something like: "I really don't want the academy; my parents told me to apply". (YES, we do hear that sometimes).

So if our MOC already as 1 appointed from his nominations, our DS has no chance unless he is in national pool?

Don't see any ROTC nominations on the appointment list. I still have heard nothing. I called my ad. counselor a week ago today, and she said they haven't given ROTC appointments yet. Got my TWE april 1st last yr, and haven't gotten that yet. Going through this process twice is definitely an experience.

If your MOC has someone appointed from his slate, then your DS is in the national pool. The true question is how high he's ranked in the nation pool.
( That's a question that none of us can answer. )

Some MOC have 2 appointees on the list. Moc can have possible 5 appointed if openibgs, then others into pool? Just confused. Appreciate some clarification.

So just to clarify one thing:
With all of the MOC phone calls the other week, does that mean that all MOC slates have been filled (Or at least appointed)?
Or could there be some left?

Without directing answers to any one particular person, let me try and answer a couple of things.

1. Just because a MOC has an appointee, doesn't mean you don't have a chance except for the national pool. The MOC could have more than one opening. (My one senator and representative each had 2 openings this year).

2. Also, the appointee with the MOC nomination could turn down the appointment. That frees up another person from that slate. NOT from the national pool. (I already know of some who have turned down their appointment in the last 2 days)

3. Yes, pretty much the MOC appointees have been selected. But again, people have to realize. MILITARY ACADEMIES ARE NOT EVERYONE'S FIRST CHOICE. Just because this is a military related forum, and you all are very interested in the academies, doesn't mean everyone is. Many put in for it as their "B", "C", or "D" school.

4. MOCs can have 5 cadets "Appointed using the MOC's nomination" at the academy at one time. Those from the national pool, even though they have a nomination from a MOC, do not count against the MOC's MAX of 5 at the academy. A MOC having 5 open slots in the same year is slim to no way in the world. It would be almost impossible. I guess certain districts in the country, that weren't very pro-military, and rarely had any applications, could have a lot of openings in the same year. But again; rare/slim to none.

5. There is no way to know if all of any category appointments have been filled. If they did all of the 500+ MOC appointments in one day, hypothetically, do you honestly believe that all 500+ are going to accept the appointments. Again; too many people on a Gung-Ho/Pro-Military/Academy forum (Who are here because they really want the academy), think that all applicants think like they do. You forum members probably make up, at most, 5% of all applicants. Do you think there's 600 class of 2016 applicants on this forum? I don't. There's no way to say how many more appointments for MOC slots, presidential slots, etc... are going to come out. WHY??? Simply.... We don't know how many are going to decline. And believe it or not, in past years, approximately 1700 appointments would be offered because "400 WOULD TURN THEM DOWN EVERY YEAR".

Hope this helps a little.

A MOC can have 5 cadets at the academy at one time--from senior down to freshman. Its possible to have more than one MOC opening in a year--one of his cadets could graduate, and another of his could leave the academy early for whatever reason, for example. I would think to have all 5 spots open at once has probably never happened, though, as that would be a huge coincidence for all 5 of a MOC's cadets to leave the same year for whatever reason. Even if that were to happen, a MOC probably wouldn't appoint 5 in one year since theoretically if they all stayed at the academy for all 4 years, the MOC couldn't appoint anyone again for 4 years. A MOC would want to have the option to appoint someone each year--keep the constituents happy!

After a candidate has been charged to the MOC's slate, all other candidates on that slate that are 3Q'd go to the National Pool. Then they are competing against a much larger group than the original 10 on the MOC's slate.
