Official USAFA Class of 2016 Appointment thread

This admission process must be a disaster for the USAFA. Attrition still happens over four years. History will tell how this class will endure. The other academies protect their numbers by taking cuts at other levels. not at the lifeline.

In CA, MOC are the primary source of nominations. Senator noms do not exist. The MOC makes you choose which academy you would like to attend. My DS recieved a NOM and we were visited by a Colonel, 2 Lts and all for not. They wanted my son but the USAFA did not. Lottery winners are attending. The class of 2016 are the Schwartz kids.
Disappointed. SDSU 2016 and computer engineering. Go Aztecs beat AF.

Captain of Marines......

Everyone who was admitted this year deserves it in one way or another.

Can I ask what this means because I do not want to say something if I am completely wrong.

Also because others want him at the Academy does not make him entitled to an appointment. CA is competitive, there must have been flat out better candidates than him.

The AF Chief of Staff is General Norton Schwartz...what he meant is that you have to know someone to get in this year.

Since I live in CA and am a little familiar with the process, I believe this is referring to the "spreading the wealth" method that the Congressmen use. In other words, if a Representative nominates you, the Senators don't bother looking at you. Perhaps, since there are so many candidates, Senators don't bother looking at a lot of people but I think that Senators do still nominate a few candidates.

Oh, okay. I understand.

Surely you could have expressed yourself more professionally, especially when so many are trying to stay positive for the ones who are still waiting to hear a yay or nay. Sour grapes are just that, Sour Grapes. California is super competitive, wcs is what it is. USAFA has been at this far longer than just one season of choosing candidates. Many who receive appointments from California do it under Presidential due to the sheer number of retirees. I would know that because, I have two children, one just accepted to the class of 2016, going to USAFA on Presidential appointments. Each has a strength that USAFA saw fit to give an appointment to. One incredibly smart but not super athletic, the other very athletic and slightly above average academically. One's application waited until the last minute, the others was completed in August of the application year. One was wait listed, the other received an appointment in October of the application year. What I am trying to say is there are so many variables, I have seen both sides of the spectrum. Keep it positive for those still waiting! Sorry about your disappointment :frown:

DS just received the above e-mail. Why would the Air Force Academy send out such an e-mail asking the appointee to by-pass the security features of their browser?

Because any time your browser connects to an HTTPS website (think of it as a "secure" version of HTTP), your browser looks for a certificate that is signed by some certificate authority.

Note that whenever you connect to most websites (that are only HTTP), you don't get any sort of security warning. It's not that every HTTP site has a certificate, it's just that the very idea of HTTPS is that it's secure, and to help verify the authenticity of the website, they have certificates. So connecting to an HTTPS without a certificate is no less "dangerous" than a standard HTTP site (and it's actually safer still, the certificate isn't the only security measure).

So some people don't bother with getting a signed certificate from some certificate authority because it's expensive and there's an annual bill attached. They "self-sign", and on those sites, you get a warning in Firefox (or they have a certificate from a an agency that Firefox doesn't explicitly trust).

So, in conclusion: nothing to worry about, the email isn't suspicious (I got it as well). And ignoring all that, you can just look at the domain: it's usafa.edu. I'm pretty sure they're pretty trustworthy.

I guess a neat way to test this is to go to google.com (it's now HTTPS by default), and in Firefox, click the google icon to the left of the address bar. You'll see it says your connection is secure and that it's verified by some company that's a certificate authority. Go to usafa.edu, and click to the left of the address bar, and you'll get no information since it's not an HTTPS site and thus not secure.

National Pool?

We need a little insight here. Our 3Q DD has applied and has not heard anything about an Appointment or hold status. If she were in the National Pool, would she have been notfied of this? Her portal has had no change, we check it a few times per day. Any advice or thoughts?:unhappy:

First of all, it is really early in the morning. Second - it is a good thing you have not heard yet. However, according to 'insider' - there are still some notifications going out this week - and some of them will be non-offers of appointment. It is a very tough year for admissions, lots of applicants and not many slots. Hope you get good news, but one way or another you will know soon.

The reason you get a certificate error is because the site is set up by USAFA/DFR (the registrar's office) and they are using the DOD certificate authority to secure the site.

The DOD (Department of Defense) started its own certificate authority and began issuing its own SSL certificates a few years ago (primarily to reduce costs). The problem is that the DOD certificates are not published for commercial use and your browser cannot validate them unless you manually install all the DOD certificates yourself. Computers owned by the DOD (and setup by DOD IT departments) have those certificates installed and don't get the errors.

USAFA Admissions had the same problem a few years back. The browser warnings were getting more and more alarming so USAFA Admissions received a "waiver" from the DOD to use commercial certificates. USMA and USNA also use commercial certificates for their admissions sites.

Appreciate the update. We have been seeing significant spam e-mail recently and since the web site was .edu instead of .mil or .gov this caused me initially to question the source. DS will update with the information. Thanks for your help.
