Official USAFA Class of 2016 Appointment thread

Huge disappointment Silverwings, and yes, you have every right to be disappointed for your son. Rejection hurts - and it hurts big time. But things happen for a reason.

The process is in no way perfect, and USAFA/ROTC make errors in their selections, but now it's up to your son - not you - to pick up the pieces and carry on. HE needs to decide what HE wants to do next.

He can still do ROTC this year without a scholarship - apply for a scholarship while at school, or reapply to USAFA.

IMPO USAFA messed up on their process this year. They knew they were limited to 1050 for their class, and thus didn't do many LOA's or early appointments. Kids who normally would have received early offers didn't - I assume it's because they wanted to look at the whole group. As Batmom said - that's comparing thousands of kids who all deserve a slot - how do you choose? Next year there will be more slots, and a kid with a year of college under his belt (with good GPA in those math & science classes) will have an edge on kids right out of HS.

kdc246 had a valid question - when was his application completed? Earlier is so much better than later.

You say he was 2 sport varsity athlete and NHS president. That's great, but what other EC's? If that was it - maybe that was the differential. -- was he recruited at all? Did he at least contact the coaches in his sports? If not, why?

While you say he got a 5 on a Calc AP, what was his Math SAT portion? You can score 2240 on SAT and only have 640 on Math; maybe they wanted that higher this year.

I think the TWE letter tells everyone to take Calc 1 & 2 and reapply. They can't personalize the TWE letter. Have him talk to his ALO & USAFA contact and ask where he was lacking.

Northern VA is extremely competitive - to get two nominations is huge. I'm pretty sure though N.VA doesn't rank their slate.

Listen to soccerdude - he took the rejection the first time and turned it into a positive.

Best of luck to your son.

Greentrees, and all of you who responded with kind thoughts, thank you, it is much appreciated. It's still a mystery to us as to what happened.

To answer your questions, his SAT breakdown is Reading 710, Math 790, Writing 740. ACT is 33. AP scores Calculus 5, Government 4, Latin 4, US History 5, and Literature 3. SAT II scores Math L1 780, US History 720, Latin 660. I just listed a few extracurricular's before, but more detail: Varsity soccer: First team All Conference + leading scorer, Varsity Squash: Captain, NHS President 2012, Student Govt. VP 2011, Red Key Club, Co-leader/Co-founder Student Peer Leadership and Counseling, volunteer with Paralyzed Veterans of America, JMSG High-Power Rifle Shooting Team: Top ten finish junior two man team match 2011 Camp Perry National Matches + NRA rifle expert rating, Virginia Governor's School for Science and Technology Summer 2011 (#1 candidate for region), USAFA Summer Program 2011. One Congressional and One Senator nomination, No. VA.

I can't recall exactly when he finished the last element of his application, all of the work on the nominations and application is blurring together, but it was a few weeks before the deadline - not months before as we parents would have preferred. He has learned a lesson about timing.

Over the next two weeks, he will be making a decision on an alternate path, which will be accepting an offer from Georgetown University, Washington University in St. Louis, Rice University, or University of Virginia. I think he may now be thinking more intently about doing HPSP for Medical School after undergrad at one of the above, which provides a direct commission, rather than re-applying to USAFA after a year. But it all depends!

Uh, if this kid can't get in with these credentials, someone must have made a very large error. Congratulations on an unbelievable record...these stats are jaw dropping. If his application was in prior to the deadline, that is all that should matter. Best of luck in whatever course you decide.

Here is an interesting factoid from the land of 10,000 lakes. As of Saturday, I learned that 21 appointments were offered to Minnesotans and 20 out of 21 were accepted! The one person that turned it down decided to go to West Point. Based off of history, the ALO officer said more MN folks "should" get appointments totaling around 25. MN normally has over 30 cadets slots at the USAFA. This will be a lean year.

I found that acceptance rate to be shockingly high. I know my DS got two appointments and I would assume many other young men and women were offered more than one appointment as well. I wonder if this is common in other States?

I assumed that the long announcement delay would cause a lot of fallout and students would choose other Academy's or other colleges. I was wrong.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the kid who turned down the appointment to go to WP is one of my very good friends. We ended up seeing eachother at all the interviews and everything, in the waiting room so many people were telling us that only one will receive an appointment to where they wanted to go. I'm glad to know they were wrong :)

Very impressive stats. The only things that I can think of that would keep someone like this from getting in is a poor interview and/or poor recommendations. He should do very well in whatever he chooses to pursue.

Silverwings, on behalf of a grateful nation, please accept my appologies for an oversight on USAFA admission process. Clearly, indisputably and without question, your son should have received an appointment into the class of 2016. Sorry folks if this young man can't get in, then there is something clearly wrong. Silverwings --
Think I agree with Fritz on this. IMPO USAFA (and ROTC) messed up big time on your son. That said - I am a firm believer there is a reason for everything and thus your son has a different path ahead of him.

He has wonderful schools to choose from -- I wish him all the best.

HPSP is a great option if he winds up pursuing a medical degree. I only say that because his interests could change.
My older son happens to be attending EVMS on HPSP right now.

Please let the forum know what he decides.

Silverwings- your kid sounds awesome. You mention med school and I am not sure if that is a negative to admissions or not. If during the interview a candidate says "I have always dreamed of being a doctor and can't see myself doing anything else" then I would guess they wouldn't appoint that candidate no matter what he looks like on paper. I am not saying that is what happened, but just a thought. Many of the cadets with dreams of med school are dashed due to grades and then what? He has a short career in the Air Force doing something he doesn't enjoy. If his dream was always to be a fighter pilot and that is what he expressed to admissions, my bet is that he would have had a LOA. Best of luck to him.

My daughter was told NOT to mention anything about med school when she went for her ALO interview by a family friend who had been, but wasn't currently and ALO. He said that was a definite no go back in 2010. She has since decided that was not the track for her and is a Physics major at the Academy.

I'm sending you a PM.

well i wouldnt say that its a no go back if you say that you want to go to Med School during your ALO interview because that's what I said during mine. Actually, one of my essays was also about me wanting to pursue a career as a surgeon so I'm not sure how it works then.

I think VA is just extremely competitive. It would not surprise me at all if someone simply beat him out, but it is strange he was not AT LEAST put on the wait list. However, far be it from me to question the admissions board and say they screwed up.

My DS said he was interested in becoming a Doctor during his interviews but he wasn't dead set on that career. He did get an appointment.

I'm curious. What was his weighted GPA and class rank? I'm assuming it was high since he got into Georgetown and Washington University. Chin up. No doubt he will be going places!:thumb:

Gratitude

I see all of these students with resumes miles longer than mine was, with stats much much higher than mine was, and they did not get an appointment. I guess it just leaves me gratful that I did get one. It also adds a little motivation to see the entire program through. I know that if i hadn't been appointed I would be very upset to hear about the Basics that drop out before they have seem much of the program at all.

To SilverWings:

I can understand the heartache that you must be going through with a son who is clealy so remarkable. His scores are so high that it is truly outstanding. I did send you a private message with a suggestion you might try. I wish you and your son all of the success and happiness wherever he goes to school.
My best to you, batmom
