Being the m of a DS band "geek" (not a PC) I am trying to remain light and disconnected from the attempts at humor here but actually I am more concerned with all the band co kids trying to juggle all the stuff required of them this first tri when some would really rather be on the water, need to be studying or want to just have some fun instead of constantly practicing.
I love the band and am proud of it but I don't think kids should be told they have to be in it at indoc, it should be a choice. Problem is, there might not be a band then if it were pure choice. Kids this age often want to be done with band after years in hs, and try new things. But, from what I have heard, overall, band co has a higher GPA than other companies. I don't know if that is fact or fiction though. It makes sense to me if kids have to juggle band and a sport, etc. then they are better at time management in the end.
Anyway - just so everyone knows, not all kids in band co who play instruments at KP (or in the real world even) are "geeks", some actually are athletes, EMT's, love to sail, and do Marine Ops as well. They are often your all around well-balanced kids. But keeping it all going and still keeping grades up is the thing I worry about the most.
Too bad there isn't more respect for people who play instruments at KP, wonder where that comes from?-- I have theories, but I don't think we need another fire so I will try to keep quiet. Suffice it to say that in my experience mostly men have a need to tease people about band, not women. Funny that.
Oops, fire extinguisher anyone?
Fortunately, I imagine most band kids who came through KP did just fine in spite of all the unfounded perceptions about musicians and unwarranted teasing from other mids. Just my 2 cents worth - I am just a "geek m"
