Service selection sheets turned in for c/o 24!!

Why would they do that this year?
Either because there would be a lot of happy drunks or a lot of pissed off drunks (depending on rumors) and they are trying to control it? Or because they are ramping up plans to graduate everyone early due to global conflicts and send them immediately to assigned duty station on Friday and they need them to be able to function... Or something different. Hard to say.

DS and company have heard rumors (of course unconfirmed) that there was a very high number of Navy and Marine pilot requests compared to the allocated slots. Lots of nerves abound.
My DS heard that a lot will get pilot slots and because flight school is so backed up, they're being encouraged to go to Grad school to fill the time.

.. Way to start the rumor mill.... I can hear it now, I heard from a reliable source that graduation is tomorrow AM. (BTW - Interesting thought, would USNA lose its accreditation if we graduated Midshipman early to fight a war like we did in WW II.)

Seriously, I presume that this is the 'Dant's call, and probably the right one. Sending Firsties out into town the night of Service Assignment is just an invitation for poor decision making (and worse, poor decision making out in the public eye). Sometime its better to keep these things out of sight.

Lets all just raise to the Class of '24 and their parents. I know 1 year from now I will be self medicating to stay calm as I await DS SA day!

Wow 1year from now. It feels like we just dropped him off for I-Day :) I think the rollercoaster has sped up exponentially.

GO NAVY!

Wasn’t there talk about establishing a bar on the Yard for upperclassmen of age? Doesn’t West Point have that? I remember a chapter in Absolutely American (I think that’s what it’s called) about Branching night (like 20 years ago).

The first one. Used to be pretty normal. There's a range of emotions to be amplified by alcohol: happiness, sadness, bitterness, denial, anger, and rage.

At least if something happens, it happens in-house and doesn't involve folks living out in town or the local police.

I remember as plebes we were told to lock our doors on service assignment night and keep a low profile as the remaining upperclass wrestled the firsties back into their rooms. Some firsties will be bitter and angry in the first few hours of being told they got their fourth choice, it's not a happy time for everyone.

Can you still buy beer at Dahlgren ? That was our bar in the yard. I think Firsties also had privileges to go to the O=Club during authorized liberty periods, but frankly don't recall ever using it. As a practical matter, there were so many great bars in and around Annapolis that it is unlikely that a bar in the Yard would ever get much use.

Spring of 1/C yr, Midn OldRetSWO spent quite a few Friday evenings at the O'Club bar. With sporting event MOs on Sat, it was a good close by place that had 2 for 1 happy hour (remember those) until 8 or so. I used to hang out with a couple of nice women who worked at NAAA and USNI but there was one LT/Company Officer who was in their orbit and he tried to push me away a few times but "the girls" liked me a lot more than they liked him and made him promise to not "go after" me in the Hall.
Dahlgren was good for beers on Saturday, especially while watching USNA Hockey.

Good Times!

DS reported that the Firsties town liberty for Thursday has been canceled. Historically night of SA was full of off yard libation consumption.
This has been the case for some time now. Two years ago it was the same, but our entire class had a party in Dahlgren Hall with plenty of booze. To be honest, there are very good reasons why there’s no longer town liberty the night of service selection.

“love” awarded for the utility of your post Kierkegaard………. you’ve offered up better prose👍

I seem to recall that there was a Firstie party for SA (I think) last yr in Dahlgren or King Hall and there was drink tkts handed out & a few managed to compile quite a few from others and some got out of hand. I recall that Dep Dant read them the riot act at lunch the next day about unprofessional behavior.

Just sharing information that the Admiral ultimately in charge of Pensacola has noted that command expects the backlog of time it takes to start NIFE and Primary to decrease / be shorter/ improve, and at least some present grad coursework "fill the time" options being offered to the class of 2023 are not planned to be offered / needed for the class of 2024. Presently Ensigns from the class of 2023 (various commissioning sources) with a duty station at PNS who are awaiting the start of NIFE are a mix of attending a local online university or completing a grad degree through Naval Postgraduate school. If you are researching the graduate school options be sure to understand your check-in date at PNS and what that will mean to your spot in queue to start Nife when a slot opens up. Also understand what if any service commitment additions the formal grad degree option may entail. Lastly, since this is a USNA thread, I'll share you may wish to seek to understand options to complete the power flight academy if you haven't already before reporting *if you wish as that provides a foundation and elementary exposure to flight.

Good luck to all with service assignments - may things work out for you and yours.

DS loved power flight this summer. Set the hook for sure. Scared the crap out of mom, but seeing the picture of him that his instructor took post his solos? Best and biggest smile I think I have ever seen on his face. Priceless.

USNA is managing risk. Allowing Mids to have some fun in a controlled environment. There will be tickets passed around to other Mids and plenty will get more than 5. Athletes, those who aren’t 21 (there are some) will hand them off if they aren’t drinking. Good luck to all the Firsties!

... so the night before SFQC graduation, most candidates went out and celebrated. Around 0200, two candidates were caught by the local sheriff and arrested them for DUI. By 0800, the graduating class was marching to the coliseum and the two DUIs were standing next to the road in civilian clothes, bags and baggage. The two received dishonorable discharge. During Officer Basic, a classmate after a night of drinking, hit a dumpster while parking next to the BOQ. She felt guilty and called the military police. Make a long story short, she received an Article 15. I've shared these stories with DS. He must've been listening because he doesn't drink at all. His favorite horror stories from the yard involve Mids not allowed to go on 🎄 Christmas leave due to drunken shenanigans.

Mine reported the same rumor, with the addition that SWO interest was short.
I’d say both are typical in your average Service Assignment year. SWO will usually round out its numbers by a “SWO draft” and Naval Aviation is usually competitive. NFO has increased in competitiveness from it being a “draft” community. NFO suffered from an image problem that was partly induced by the Academy. Marine Air seems to fluctuate. I’ve seen competitive years, but I’ve also seen years where they are filling spots from Marine Ground non-selects (USMC Ground is also a pretty competitive community, on average).

For candidates lurking…one of the reasons BGOs implore you to research Navy and Marine Corps communities (i.e. jobs) is to have an open mind, even if you are fairly dead set on what you want to do. Some MIDN will not get their first choices (btw, this isn’t always the individuals who rank the lowest…it’s happened to those who are at or towards the top of the class) and if you have an open mind, you are more likely to think of second and third choices you’d still be comfortable with. While it won’t take away all disappointment of not getting a first choice for service selection, it won’t be as devastating. If you are dead set on being a pilot and only a pilot…if you get the unfortunate news of not being selected, it will be hard to stomach. In a Navy career, there will be many times when preferences are sought, sometimes you are lucky and get what you want and sometimes you are at “the needs of the Navy.”

Definitely will be an exciting day as 2024 learns what they will be doing in the near future…good luck!

OMG it's tomorrow, and the waiting and suspense will be over! Does anyone know if it's ever livestreamed? Or, what time it all "goes down" tomorrow?
