Service selection sheets turned in for c/o 24!!

Does it happen that JOs get assigned to a ship or boat that is in maintenance and not see any sea duty during their service commitment?
It’s possible that someone can get assigned to a ship/sub in the yards, but they’ll usually go TAD to a ship/sub that is capable of getting underway. The whole point of your first tour, regardless of warfare speciality, is to get qualified and gain operational experience. Going TAD to a ship/sub that gets underway allows them to gain that experience and not fall behind their peers.

Not a sub draft per se, as if you are qualified, you have to put subs down. And then, I guess, if it’s on your sheet, and you get it assigned, it’s not technically a draft?? Even number 3, 4 or 5. My guy and bunch of his buddies are a part of that story. Up there OOM, had subs low on their list bc they had to, and got subs.

The shock is wearing off. Slowly. With wine. They feel pretty blindsided. 97pct of the brigade got 1/2 choice. 7 pct didn’t.

I’m a smarty pants #SubMomma!! Anyone here want to connect? Shoot me a pm. So many questions!!

Interesting to hear this perspective. I think it's different rules for NROTC iirc, recently changed too.

wishing the best!

my daughter has a guy in her company that this happened to - he is pretty disappointed - she was trying to cheer him up bc she loves subs and will probably choose that unless aviation wins her over this summer. hang in there mom!! I am sure you can connect with some other sub moms and learn the ropes!!!

Thats frustrating. From the leaked MIDN file showing percentages, only 1 MiDN in top 250 or so would have not received 1 or 2 choice.

Was there a Service Assignment Review Board process this year?

Yep. That's basically what happened to DS and a number of others in his detachment (he was NROTC, not my Hokie). They weren't 'drafted', they were 'force-selected'. But, hey, the press release wasn't incorrect when they said everyone got one of their top three choice that year (subs had to be in their top three, as did one of several different aviation options).

My father was born in 1923. When he was 21 he was a pilot of a four-engine B-24 flying over the Alps to bomb Germany and Austria.
His grand daughter will be 21 this May when she commissions and heads for Pensacola. She has always had a picture of my father and his flight crew in front of their plane above her desk. These men, with the brown leather flight jackets trimmed in lamb's wool, were always larger than life to me and probably to my daughter. A hundred years and a new generation. Hope the firsties are toasting tonight those who came before.

I’m hearing through different channels moms and dads that have heard good news, and news their firsties were not hoping to hear. I’m hopeful that some can find a way to grieve the plans they had made, and the service they had envisioned and embrace the community and service the Navy saw fit to place them in as leaders.

Each new Ensign or Marine officer will be that- a leader.

While I am happy for mine, I’m aware all too well that some of his shipmates didn’t get their chosen assignment. May they bloom where the Big Navy plants them.

Oof. When our kids hurt, we hurt., I am sorry to hear your son didn’t receive one of his preferred selections. I’m sure many have told you that they only draft the brightest and very capable for sub leadership, so in that regard it is a compliment, but that may not fully ease the sting. Also, I believe the Sub officers have a path to earn bonuses that most other Navy officers do not. There are a couple of bonuses as a sign-on and then when they complete a part of their training. There is also a six figure bonus if they re-up/ stay in when they promote to be a department head - not Ensign-2nd LT but 2nd LT to LT advancement. Lastly, I believe sub officers have just no problem getting a great leadership position when they decide to transition to a civilian career – highly recruited. FWIW…

One other thing – how “done” is this service assignment? I’m not sure of the USNA process, but generally each sub candidate goes through an interview in DC with the sub head honcho – since your son didn’t have it high on his preference sheet, maybe that interview hasn’t yet happened? My understanding is that a selectee has the option to declare definitively in that interview if they want, that they do not want to serve in the sub community, and if that happens the person is generally switched from Sub to SWO. I’m not sure which he would prefer. I’m advised that power school is a bit of a grind – buddy of DS just asked him to go on an expensive cruise over the winter break – DS said nope – too much money. Sub trainee said – oh right, you actually go out/ spend money. I sit at school studying until 10PM nightly (or later, because the material they are studying is classified/ can’t be taken home) before going back to my apt and collapsing – I have no life. But then again, he does have 15k in the bank that the aviation selects do not.

Not sure any of that will help – just sharing I’m sorry you and yours had a challenging day yesterday, and wishing you the best.

My DS says the coursework is not too difficult but the pace is very fast. One of the most difficult things is it’s hard to continue the physical training routine developed over high school and at USNA. This can be a big challenge for USNA grads who spend 2 hours a day working out and use that space to deal with stress.

A relative went subs recently (it was his first choice). Yes, you have to study at Nuke Power School. However, if you did well at USNA (especially in STEM), it's not overwhelming. He loves the technical aspect.

You also are only required to do 5 years and, should you decide to leave the USN, are VERY marketable in the civilian world.
