So I know we all want to get into a SA but...

I've been accepted to 3 schools here in Kentucky and I think I'm going to go to one of them instead of a service academy (which was my original plan, but my mom talked me out of it. I'd like to think it's because she knows what's best for me)

Not to tick off Mom, but have you applied at any SA's? Mom and Dad have your best interest in mind; however, you have to live with all the "WHAT IF"'s long after you're from under their roof. I went to school/career path after high school to keep Mom happy. Was very, very good at it but found it much more fun when I was not forced to do it. It lost all joy quick. I quit a full ride schlorship and went into what made me happy, working as a temp employee first to see if I liked it, then hit school HARD with a vengence. 25 years after graduation, I still enjoy my career today and have seen/been/done more things than most folks will ever see/be/do, all on my favorate Uncle's dime. Very few "WHAT IF"'s around here.

That's why I'm happy for my son and his acceptance @ USCGA; however, if he wanted to go into law enforcement, commercial logging, carpet laying, plumbing or whatever, as long as he's happy, as long as he feels he's done his best, making the living he wants and being a productive member of society, I'm happy as well.

Just make sure you have no regrets and no "WHAT IF"'s when you're old and gray, not that I'm old nor gray, I'll have you know.

I didn't apply to any SA's because my mom doesn't want me to. She's overprotective of me at times but I guess that's her job lol. I've thought a LOT about this and I'm prepared to live with all the What If's. So a civilian career it is. I can help people in my future civilian career (which will be TEACHING!) You know, shaping young minds and everything lol. But I will, and always will, support everyone in the military! :)

Hey Falcongirl - sounds like you're very similar to my son's plans. He has his appointment to Navy, and an LOA/Nom to AF, but also has acceptances to Univ. of Minn. (IT/Honors) and Wisconsin. Just curious if you're done any research into those schools as far as accepting and if they're willing to hold a slot for you even if you go to an academy. I know technically you can't say yes to two schools after May 1, but many report colleges were okay with them keeping them as a backup when attending a SA. We were going to wait it out a bit and then call both of those schools and see what their policy was. I don't mind if we lose a couple hundred dollar deposit to hold his spot until early August, but don't want to get him in trouble for doing so without telling the school. Just curious about your plans!

Marciemi, I was planning to do pretty much what you stated (hold on to the other acceptances for a while, then call and ask if they'll hold a spot for me through most of the summer in case I somehow cannot make it through BCT). The University of Minnesota is only 20 minutes from my house (plus my older sister is a student there), so I can always go down and speak with someone in person if I can't get anywhere on the phone. I'll be interested to know how things work out for your son!

Thanks and best of luck to you too! Different note, but I did get the registration info for orientation from another parent:

https://admissions.usafa.edu/RRX/appointeeregistration.htm

Signed my son up for the first session since he's off school the week before that for break so we can go out early and ski and meet up with some of his friends from SS and my friends from HS, etc. If by chance you do that session, hopefully we can meet you then!

If you hear anything from WI/MN, please let us know and we'll do the same!

I just looked at the site and ran the dates past my parents, and it looks like we'll be coming out for the first session too. I'll probably hold off registering until I receive some more information from the academy, but it's nice to at least have the dates!

Wow!

Not to over step another parents rights but, how does your mother know what's in your heart, and your personal educational goals?

Good question. I don't know. I guess because I was torn between a civilian career as a teacher or attending a SA and joining the military that she picked the least dangerous of the two.

As long as you've chosen to take her advice then I think she made the correct decision for you. You probably would not be successful in a SA and are better suited for a teaching job.

That's what I was thinking. I mean, if I'm having doubts about it then a SA isn't for me.

Kudos to you for accepting that rather than being offended. :thumb: My husband and I are WP grads and throughout the entire process this year my son has been asked and questioned over and over whether it was HIS decision to go to a SA or if he was being pushed into it by us. Honestly, until he went to SS, even I wasn't totally sure. But he came home from those 3 weeks (did 3 different ones) insisting those were the best weeks of his life and he 100 percent wanted this. I still worry about him getting through the hard times ahead (yes, I'm a mom! )and agree that if you don't really, really want it, it's far better to realize that now.

Incidentally, his AF appointment says:

"Make sure the Academy is what you really want for yourself. Don't choose the Academy for its glamour and prestige, and DON'T let your parents, relatives, coaches, or friends make the decision for you. After all, it will be you who must meet the Academy challenges, not them. .... If you are not sure you can accept the rigorous training and disciplined life a cadet experiences, we encourage you to decline your appointment now, before you accept the commitment. "

I didn't finish my application anywhere else... haha.

Yes, I realize how stupid that was, but hey, I got lucky I guess.

It would appear you're engineering opting...

If so, as a "backup" I'd move Rose-Hulman up a LOT higher than you have it. Personal bias but I worked with 2 graduates of RH...and they are VERY VERY good engineers! I was amazed!

They credited RH for the serious student/teacher interaction, the focus on learning, not memorizing, and an excellent learning environment!

Gee...sounds a lot like USAFA!

I'd second that. Rose-Hulman was my back-up to USAFA. They agreed to take me if I became injured before or even during Basic and could not finish. After visiting and touring the chemical engineering department with the department head, I was incredibly impressed by the staff and facilities. Dorms were nice and looked like a blast too. The glass chapel overlooking the lake on campus looks strikingly like the chapel at USAFA too. My vote is SOLIDLY for RHIT. Incredible school.

Purdue was my third choice (and my father's alma mater as well). :)

My 2-4 choices I haven't heard back from, but I applied regular decision so I guess I just have to wait. I would hopefully do NROTC at any of these schools. I thought of many others but didn't want to pay the app fee for so many colleges

Hahah Jan 1 deadlines approaching and still have two short essays left on one of my apps... And I had my wisdom teeth removed today, I doubt hydrocodone helps you do creative writing
If its a Jan 1 deadline does that mean by 23:59 tomorrow or can I submit it on new years day?

I believe its 23:59 of 1/1/10 and I understand what you mean. Good luck!

Like you I have yet to write my college essays

I think I'm going to get them done tomorrow just to make sure. All I have left is the two half page essays in the UVA common app supplement. If I was not interested in an SA, or had not gotten a LOA in the fall, I would have 1) Applied EA everywhere i could and 2) Done the later deadlines months ago. Honestly, the reason it has gotten so late is because I don't really care.
