One Man's Opinion

Admissions does have a tough job but they are certainly disingenuous to say the least just google what an insider says not the speculations from the outsiders of this forum: Professor Bruce Fleming
You are going to discredit the Admissions Dept. based on one man's opinion? Really?

STAT

When my child started this process two years ago, we visited UVA, Vanderbilt, UNC Chapel, etc. It gave me an appreciation for the admission process and all the factors they take into consideration. While each school's process varied slightly, they were all looking for kids that could be successful at their schools and contribute to the academic learning environment.
Two STATS everyone likes to throw around are GPA and SAT. While GPA is important, it doesn't tell the whole story. For example, UVA looked real careful at the actual courses the student took. UVA looked at a students record and asked if they took the hardest courses offered at their HS (in addition to performance in those classes). The admissions office was looking for a student that challenged themselves because they would be challenge at UVA. Many take a student's body of work and assign a GPA to put on the same scale.
SAT is another misleading STAT by itself. It doesn't always tell the whole story. My DS made a 690M on her SAT. Very respectable, but for whatever reason couldn't get over the 700. However, she made 5/5 on her AP test and an A in Georgia Tech Calculus II. She currently has an A in Georgia Tech Calculus III. Taking these as a senior in HS. So, who makes the better candidate? Her with an SAT score of 690 or some other kid with an 800? The 800 may only be a prediction for the other student. She's actually proven her ability on the college level.

If you mean an organization that on the one hand promotes the ideals of the constitution and its defense against all enemies foreign and domestic, and on the other, tramples on the first amendments and retaliates, then yes I do. My dad always told me the courage to speak out against the overwhelming forces of "group think" is a very rare characteristuc of leadership.

Filling URM quotas may not be an admirable practice, but I wouldn't say that the admissions board is trampling on the first amendment.

Did he also tell you that discretion is the better part of valor?

Attitude Counts

HC, from recalling your past posts where you speak of being shocked, blaming politics and now, discrediting the Admissions Dept of USNA because of "retaliation", I'm beginning to get a sense of what your interview with your BGO and LoRs from your math and english teachers may have stated. As you have said earlier, you're off to Aim High U. Time to move on. Best of luck to you in CO Springs. Cheers.

Let's keep this thread educational and maintain our integrity! I asked about the SAT scores of those whom have been appointed because I feel that my SAT scores are the one thing that may hold me back. It is now April 10th and I still have not heard from the usna. I called admissions and they said that I am still a candidate and no decision has been made thus far. Admissions did tell me that 85% of all applicants have received their appointments or TWE.

You are all right (those who responded to my stats - 800 math, 760 critical reading). My case is different since I was born and raised outside the US - my only possibly Nom source is the VP's office, which certainly made my overall chances lower regardless of my scores and the rest of my résumé. Pardon me for omitting all the details - I was a bit disappointed when I found out and posted rather hastily

As has been said many times before by much smarter folks... The academics are important and striving to be your best academically is something you can control. So do that!

But they are not the entire picture for admission.

My DS was accepted to USAFA. His profile...

His academics were good... not great:
SATs were low-to-mid 600s.
But he was National Honor Society, top ~10% of his class, and took all Honors/APs.

His "other" stuff:
2 Varsity Sports w/ JV and V Captainships
HS record for FitnessGram Test and 4 of 6 CFA events were max/nearly max.
4 years of JRROTC w/ various roles including Unit Commander
Long history of Volunteerism
Breath-taking LORs (even we were stunned by some of them!)
A long-standing genuine desire to serve in our military

He earned a Principal Nom (Senator), a #1 Alternate Nom (Senator), and a Competitive Nom (Rep)
He was not a recruited athlete.
He is a white male.
He/we know no one in politics.

So... would he have earned those same nominations in the most highly contested states? Maybe not, or certainly not all of them.

But when they say they want the "whole candidate", believe them!
Certainly strive to improve your academics as they are hugely important. But don't forget there is more to the puzzle then just that piece.

Stats aren't everything...

NAPS

Stats are not everything...They look at a lot more, do not be discouraged (I wasn't...just look at my SAT scores (took it multiple times), and I graduated!)
