I understand that there can be a maximum of 4000 cadets at USAFA. Does anyone here know when that 4000 number is determined? Can there NEVER be more than 4000 at ANY time, or is it acceptable for instance to have more than 4000 on I-Day but the cadet wing would need to be below 4000 by A-day or perhaps the 1st day of the new AF fiscal year? Just curious...

They always admit more than 1000 freshman, knowing some will drop out. I think the 4000 number is not a hard limit- so, they aren't going to kick people out if they are a little above.

I just looked and even on USAFA's website it mentions "Over 4000 cadets..."

Since sequester it has had to be at or below 4000. There was a time that it was not a hard and fast rule though. Back in 2010 when DD got the strength was closer to 4300. 2012 was when the big draw down to 4000 came about. They are not just numbers though, many are young people with dreams and aspirations that are unfortunately shattered sometimes.

I recall years ago that they said the numbers are submitted in May before the incoming class regarding the class size.

They can go over 4k , but like everything...they need to request a waiver. As stated since before the sequester, the AFa has not asked to go above that number.I recall a few years where they gave out 1650+/- appointments for a class of 1350. Now it is 1350 for a class size of 1100.

Until more recently, it was normal for USAFA to be well over the limit, in the range of 4400. That's about the strength it was while I was a cadet. For several years, it was a very soft limit.

Thank you. As of 30 June 2013 the wing strength was 4056

    By 31 August 2013 it was 3977.

    In 2012 they didn't get below 4000 until 30 September 2012

It would seem that at least for BCT, USAFA is either allowed to go over the 4000 number, or they apply for a waiver. Perhaps based on their estimated attrition? I was just curious if there was a certain date each year that they have to be in compliance.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

I seem to recall that the legal limit is 4,400 but, after the Class of 2014 was admitted, the AF mandated a 4,000 cadet ceiling as part of force wide cutbacks. Thus, the two subsequent classes inprocessed with lower numbers. (I'll look around to see if I can find something to support my memory when I get a chance.)

Addendum: See page 517 (Title 10 U.S. Armed Forces as amended thru 1/7/2011) http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CPRT-112HPRT67344/pdf/CPRT-112HPRT67344.pdf

Most things in the AF are tied to a Fiscal Year. My guess would be that the USAFA end strength has to be at or below 4k by 30 September each year.

From Section 9342 (page 2139) of the reference above
"The authorized strength of Air Force Cadets of the Academy (determined for any year as of the last day of the academic year) is 4,400 or such lower number as may be prescribed by the Secretary of the Air Force under subsection (j)."

I believe we know that the Secretary of the Air Force has prescribed 4000 as the current authorized strength. Thanks though for reading 2139 pages of Section 9342 to find out they need to be under this number by May. :thumb:

    According to contrails:

"In 1995 Congress capped the cadet strength at 4,400 cadets and 40 international students, effective 30 September 1998. This number was further reduced to 4,000 cadets by 1 October 2012."
