USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

I am not personally involved in the Naval Academy admissions process, but I find the drama surrounding it to be entertaining. As a parent of an Army cadet from West Point, I take pride in the uncertainty that surrounds Naval Academy Admissions.
That's what makes admissions fun! (128 pages in this thread)

I don't think some people were having much fun today.
the best experience people had today was getting screwed with by admissions. Certainly not bad, but getting messed with that isn't fun haha

It's pretty egregious to be sent a rejection email, then a retraction a few hours later that basically says 'sorry, you're still in it, for now, but maybe tomorrow we'll send you another rejection.' The retraction should have said 'sorry, we're actually offering you an appointment.' I've never heard of any college doing anything like that, ever.

Extremely unprofessional. I’m disappointed they would do that and I hate it for that kid.

Having attended BGO training on the yard last summer, and met the Dean of Admissions and the stellar admissions team, I can assure you they do not take this lightly. And it isn’t from a lack of professionalism. I assume far from that.

Whatever glitch released those false alarms, I am sure they are not happy and never intended to ‘play’ with candidates.

My overall and lasting impression from the training was how hard such a small team of humans works to build the class. And how much they do to review each candidate, multiple times to build the class that has the puzzle pieces fit just right. To literally read personal statements (redacted for the training) out loud during admissions panels, to discuss BGO remarks and go over details in transcripts and life challenges and hardships of candidates.

Could tech be better? Sure. Can they operate like a cookie cutter public or private college outside of the DoD enclave? Absolutely not. And those who think they can or should are misguided.

Today is tough. There will be more tough days. And the roller coaster that is military life at an SA and while active duty won’t come to a static easy ride. DS is ready to commission and all the ups and downs of transitioning to life post USNA while you wait for orders create their own maelstrom.

I’m sorry to those who received unwelcome news today.

And I’m proud to see those who are grieving, accepting and stepping into plan B with a full heart and open mind.

It's not a good look. We can and should expect better. I hope nothing like that happens, again. They've had issues with their platform from the beginning of this cycle. Fix it. I don't think I'm misguided to expect better. This is, frankly, embarrassing.

I was planning to go to bed awhile ago but naturally im still here reading! Thank you so much for sharing this. I genuinely appreciate knowing that it is a slow and careful process for a reason. Tech stuff is always an unknown (esp when mercury is retrograde - sorry it’s only like the 10th time I’ve said that so far this week 😂!). I really appreciate you explaining your experience - thank you!

I don’t disagree with your statement. At all. I wanted to explain my experience with humans. Who also may have things outside of their control. I too wish it were more efficient and free of tech errors.

Was there another version with the language about sending a rejection at a later date? I only saw the version below posted earlier.

I think some more emotional intelligence could have been used to acknowledge the human distress caused during a tense time of the cycle. The “I apologize for any confusion” is too canned, doesn’t take ownership of the jerking around factor.

She’s 2012 grad, and the messaging could be more empathic. But perhaps this was what was approved…

Still kind of blowing my mind that the admissions system is still this antiquated after so many years of experience. This is my first experience with SA admissions so it’s a little shocking in contrast to other schools.
Lots more going on and more pieces to review than other colleges.

Thus N*OT COLLEGE
